FT8 Guide and Tips

Attached in PDF format is an FT8 Operating Guide written by Gary Hinson ZL2IFB - this guide is very through and full of tips - pretty much "The Book" when it comes to understanding FT8.? Everyone should read this for better understanding of what is going on and how to get better at using FT8.

A few tips for operating FT8 on our remote:

1.? Amp should be in Standby position -why - because at the current time controlling the amp power output using digital modes is problematic and can, and frequently does, result in 100 watts of drive to the amp thus putting it in a "FAULT" mode.? This "might" eventually get straightened out - no, we don't have a current timetable as to when.

2.? Mode should be in DATA - why - because transmit audio Compression is automatically set to zero and TX EQ is automatically set to Flat.? Otherwise, it's very easy to create distortion on the signal.

3.? ALC should be no more than 4 bars - why - because ALC over this creates distortion on the signal.

4.? Make sure your computer time is correct - why - because reliable decoding of FT8 relies on proper time synchronization between computers.? NetTime (? ) is free and easy to use.

5.? You should probably keep your local audio monitor off - several cases have been reported on other remotes where local audio monitors were feeding back into the audio stream to the xmtr creating lots of distortion.
