APRS EMERGENCY! beacon this afternoon...
I monitor APRS on my VHF/UHF radio and at 2:37PM this afternoon I received an emergency beacon sent by KF7KRD. I got his name and address from the FCC and called 911 for a welfare check. APRS showed it as a mobile at his address. the CRESA 911 patched me through to Tigard 911 dispatch and they sent a police unit out to Thomas's residence. Thank God, Thomas was out there fiddling with his radio and had no idea he was beaconing? an accidental APRS EMERGENCY! transmission. The Tigard Police officer gave me a call back and said he was okay.
I was surprised that the 911 dispatchers hadn't even heard of a amateur radio APRS EMERGENCY! beacon.

antenna holders
I am? just now getting into activating for POTA.? My antennas are not attached to my minivan or my Suburban.? I want to know what you all carry your antennas in.? I don't want to just lay them in the back of either vehicle.? (I'm sorry to have to miss this next meeting on GoKits.? I am organizing mine at this time. But I will watch it later.) |
Re: Is 10 meters open?
Try listening to the FT8 frequency of 28.074 USB, even if you don't use FT8.? It makes a good beacon.? If you hear lots of activity the band is open somewhere, and further investigation will help.? If it's quiet, there are likely very few stations on other parts of the band.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt's just 8am in Japan, so the opening should be starting about now. Is 10 meters open?
Tuning across the SSB portion of 10m doesn't always reveal if the band is open, especially on weekdays.?However, there is a better way.
?
Between roughly 28.200 and 28.290 MHz quite a few mostly low-power beacon stations transmit 24/7. It's surprising how often I find no signals above 28.300 MHz, yet tuning down, there are the beacons! The band IS open. They also show how QRP with a basic antenna can go a long way.?The only catch is they identify with CW (maybe a reason to learn code!). They usually have their location or grid square, so you know where they are, and are not limited to the U.S.
?
Here are the beacons I heard today in 5 minutes of tuning despite finding no signals otherwise:
?
28.250? KC5SQD? ?grid square EL29 (Missouri)
28.255? WI5V? ?Oklahoma
28.260? W1LSU? Minden, LA running 4w into a Hamstick dipole at 35ft
28.273? N0KP? grid square EN34 (Minnesota) running 1w into a "chain link fence vertical"
28.280? K5AB? Goldwaith in Central Texas with a booming signal running 50w into a ground plane
28.289? WB5DXZ? Oklahoma City running 5w into a vertical?
?
This is what the K5AB beacon sounds like: ?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIt's $36 per year, not per item. My FT-450D now has a new fan and is ready for a new home.
BTW, QRZ.com does indeed still have a swap meet.
However, while it used to be free to list items for sale, it is now $36!
Ouch!? Maybe I'll bring it to SEAPAC instead.? FYI...
