Does anyone in the group use a raspberry pi in their shack? If so, what do you use it for or maybe some suggestions on what to use it for. Maybe even portable. Thoughts.....

Just found out about the "DroidStar" smartphone app. It's native to Android Devices and the Google Play Store, but also can be used on iPhone and iOS devices via Apple's "TestFlight" Beta Tester app and following a github link. There's some guy on YouTube that explains how to set it all up, and includes a link to the download. Easy way to get on DMR, DStar, P25, and Yaesu Fusion digital modes using your smartphone. I am writing you in the hope that you will share this email with your local club members. I am the net manager of KYN, the Kentucky CW Traffic Net. To my knowledge KYN is the only state-wide traffic net that handles traffic in preparation for an emergency. KYN has been in existence for well over 60 years. We meet nightly at 0200Z on 3537 KHz. I am writing to you because we need at least one (and would love to have more than 1) station in the Nicholasville and surrounding area to handle traffic (messages) that come to KYN. The traffic net normally lasts between 10 and 20 minutes each night. It is not necessary that a person check in to the net every night, although some stations do. It is important, however, that KYN have the ability to handle messages going to any place in Kentucky, and having someone from the Nicholasville and surrounding area being part of KYN is very much needed. Several KYN members have been handling traffic on KYN for well over 20 years and obviously enjoy it. We are not a "speed" net. Typically, the net is operated at about 13 words per minute, although the net control station always slows down when appropriate. I don't know if you have any Zoom meetings, but if you do I would very much like the opportunity to tell your club members about KYN. If you or any of your members have any questions or would like to talk with me please let me know. For those members of your club that enjoy CW and public service I think that they would find KYN to be a lot of fun. Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated. 73 Ray, WB4ZDU

Daryl Stout, WX4QZ, UALR Ham Radio Club VE Team Liaison *** The new Amateur Radio license application fees will take effect on April 19, 2022. The Federal Communications Commission's authority to impose and collect fees is mandated by Congress. The $35 application fee, when it becomes effective on April 19, will apply to new, modification (upgrade and sequential call sign change), renewal, and vanity call sign applications. The fee will be per application. Administrative updates, such as a change of name, mailing or email address, will be exempt from fees. VECs and Volunteer Examiner (VE) teams will not have to collect the $35 fee at exam sessions. Once the FCC application fee takes effect, new and upgrade applicants will pay the $15 exam session fee to the ARRL VE team as usual, and pay the $35 application fee directly to the FCC by using the CORES FRN Registration system. (Side Note: Other VE Teams and VEC's may charge a different amount...some VEC's/VE Teams have no fee at all. If you go through the W5YI VEC on the QRZ website, there is an additional fee to pay. Also, no word on what individuals who do not have a bank account (checking or savings) or a credit or debit card will be able to do. It is unwise to send cash through the mail, as it's "just asking to get stolen". So, I'd contact the FCC directly for information if you fall into that category. But, I believe that any government benefit (disability payment), tax refund, etc., are now done by electronic funds transfer (EFT) to a bank account, and are NOT mailed to the individual...to avoid being stolen. When the FCC receives the examination information from the VEC, it will email a link with payment instructions to each successful candidate who then will have 10 calendar days from the date of the email to pay. After the fee is paid and the FCC has processed an application, examinees will receive a second email from the FCC with a link to their official license. The link will be good for 30 days. Additionally, the FCC stated that applications processed and dismissed will not be entitled to a refund. This includes vanity requests where the applicant does not receive the requested call sign. FREE for local pickup - first contact gets it. I have surplus to my needs a General Electric continuous duty 2M 110W power amplifier assembly for FM base station or repeater service. The PA unit was from a GE repeater. It requires 100mW drive and is adjustable from 20-110W output. It requires 12VDC at a minimum of 25A for full power output. Some work will be required to adapt it to a handheld or base transceiver. The amplifier is about 19" wider, 6" high and 6" deep. It has a large heatsink across the back side. The weight is about 15-20lbs.
