Edwards EDM12 vacuum pump diagram/manual needed
Hi I picked up an Edwards EDM12 pump which needs new seals. It's quite an old pump and I don't have a manual. Would anyone in the group have a manual or exploded diagram of this pump? thanks Dominic

SiO overcoating
4
Hey gang, Anybody out there got experience with SiO overcoating ????? I got the XMS-1 process controler working ( well Ken Hunter got it working and sold it to me...... but I plugged it in correctly after he sent me a picture). The power rig I concocted can put out around 2000 amps at 2 vac ( under load ) from some monster 220 vac transformers and I got little tantalum boats. What I dont got is any idea how far SiO can travel ( has to travel ) away from the boat to become an even cone of coverage ??? How long the boats have to heat up till the crystals begin to sublimate or even how much crystal to put in a boat each time. Any help would be appricated if you have experience in this area. consolidated vacuum systems help
2
Hello, I've recently aquired a Consolidated Vacuum Systems Piraini controler and a CVS GP-001 tube from separate sources. Does anyone have any information to determine if these two units should work together. Also, if anyone has manuals for these units and would be willing to share I would apreciate it greatly. Will

Pumping down bell jar
3
Hi All. I am new to the group. My club has aquired a vacuum coating machine that is used. It was built by the company that used it to build filters. It has a Welch 1374 roughing pump with a Varian diffusion pump and a stainless steel bell. I have been attempting to pump down the whole system to allow me to fire up the diffusion pump. When I pump down the diffusion pump off of the fore line it goes right down to about 6 E-2 torr quite rapidly. However, when I try to pump down the bell it goes down to about 260 torr then stops. I have checked all the seals. The way the thing is plumbed the fore line shares all the main lines going to the roughing pump so it can't be a leak there because the way the diffusion pump pumps down and holds vacuum fairly well. I have been over the bell jar with a fine tooth comb and cant seem to locate a leak. My question is could this be contamination in the bell jar and if so would things start outgassing at the fairly high pressure of 260 torr? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, Wayne Hilliard

Base plate thickness
7
Hey, I am thinking about to built a new bigger chamber. IN 400mm diam. I don't know how tick base plate I need. I asked the local hardware shop. 20mm thick Aluminum, and the 15mm thick stainless steel is in the same price. Or I guessed 10mm thick stainless steel wich is cheaper. Just I don't know if the 10mm thick is enough strong or not? Any suggestion? Thx! Attila The Hun

Hi Everyone, I just want let you know,my first coating process is DONE! I made a new album in the photo section, and put some photos of the results. See: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VacuumX/photos/album/607196270/pic/list I think I was worried to much about chamber pressure, and gages and such things! The experience is the best guider. Now I am very happy! Thank's for everybody who helped me to arrive to this point! Cheers! Attila The Hun

Diffusion pump doesn't work?
13
Hi All, I have got some trouble with my system. That was the first time I have run the diffusion pump.Because I just finished the cooling water system. I put about 40cc Diffoil 20 ultra from (KLS) to the pump, after everything was cleaned by acetone. The pump tank is 70mm diam and 100mm deep. So if I fire up the system the rotation pump (also runs with diffoil 20 ultra), brings down the chamber pressure to 0.07 Torr in 5 minutes.(Chamber is 11 inches in diam.)Than I close the valve to the pump and open the valve to the diff. pump. The pressure rapidly goes down to 0.07-0.09 Torr.Than I switch on the heating of the diff. pump after 5 minutes I let run the cooling water. And after 20 minutes I open the chamber to the diff. pump. And by the time happens nothing! The pressure remains 0.07 Torr. The diff. pump heating works, because the bottom of the pump is hot. The cooling runs also well. I dont't have any idea what is wrong, because the diff. pump has no movement parts.I could imagine the system has a leaking somewere but in this case the pressure should rise. But the pressure is steady and remain alwais 0.07Torr. Actually it takes some time maybe 20 minutes before the pressure becomes so steady. In the first 10 min. when the chamber pressure is 0.07 Torr than I let the rotary to evacuate the diff. pump. to 0.07Torr, than I switch back to the chamber the chamber pressure is higher about 0.12 Torr. But by the time If I switch to and fro the pressure becomes steady 0.07 Torr.Leaking? If anybody has any idea I would be very happy and thankful! Regards! Attila Schn¨¦

update from sunny Florida
Just wanted to update the gang on my latest adventures. I have been tweeking the chamber to get better and better coatings out of it. I uploaded the latest configuration of emitters and whatnots. I am now about 16" back from the mirror surface with the tungstens. I pump down for an hour and wait overnight for any outgassing to occure then pump for 3 more hours to get as hard a vacuum as I can get. It is reading 2 millitorr on my DV-6 gauge but that may be inaccurate as it is the very bottom of the scale. I cant get any glow from the 25kv plasma cleaning system at this pressure whatever it is. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VacuumX/photos/album/132340427/pic/1820725053/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc I wanted to mention cleaning of the substrates just so you can know how serious this step is. NOTHING CAN BE ON THE MIRROR SURFACE WHEN IT GOES INTO THE CHAMBER. If it fails the breath fog test for any reason, reclean the glass. Windex leaves crap behind. It is fine for general cleaning but not for final wiping. I have switched to Reagent grade methonal from Fisher scientific. It is stupid expensive, but you only use a tiny bit as final ( final ) wipe. Seen below is what happens when you get in a hurry and ignor the breath test showing you that there is a problem. Also I burned the tungsten a little long and put a lovely blueish overcoat on the mirror. It is scratch proof ( by the way ) but only 48% reflective so not really the best thing for your secondary mirror. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/VacuumX/photos/album/132340427/pic/702787394/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc Drew in sunny FLA

And the diffusion pumps WORKS!
4
HI Jerry, Thank's for the advise.I poured much more oil into my pump and it start to WORK! I am happy, because I reached the 2x10 -4 Torr. It is not good enough but much better than 0.07 Torr. But I think something leakage I have. Because the pressure in the chamber reaches the 2x10 -4 Tor very rapidly maybe some ten of seconds, and stops. The needle of the gauge starts to jump up-down. Than slowly goes back to 10-3 Torr sometimes below a bit. Than jumps a bit and rapidly goes back to 2x10 -4 Torr. Maybe It could go below but I shut down the system. I read the acetone method to find out the leakage. But I don't know how should it perform. I tried using cotton put the acetone in. And I spraed by a spraer does not work. Regards Attila

Where is the best place to put the o-ring groove?
4
As i have mentioned before so am i building a vacuum chamber an the rest that comes with this. Im now dealing with the chamber and the baseplate but i havent really decided yet if i should make the o-ring groove at the chamber or at the baseplate and i have only one shot at this. I have compared any advantage and disadvantage with both but i still cant decide. One of them is that if i put the groove at the chamber base so could it fall out (i can not make a dovetail groove that would prevent this) but it is protected from any dust and so on as if it would be on the baseplate instead. Sure, i would ofcourse not have the chamber open more then necessary but still. What it the most common place that its put in the industry or similar? I have seen both but cant really se a bigger advantage of one over the orher. Regards Henry

problem fould/solved

Hi John, Finally the problem is solved!. two transistors + 1 resistance burnt (not working). Also one fuse..its melted..Anyway replacing it by new ones not really expensive (few euros)...this is what our electrician says!.. But what is the reason for this..Will this happens when we don't follow the correct procedure...like first switch on forepump and then on turbo pump??? Normally i switch on turbo pump after 2 minutes.. Raj S.

Dear Member, I am using a turbo pump (typ.:5081, Alcatel)..It was working properly...But after 1 month i started the pump...and now it is not working..blades were not rotating..and the cooling fan is not rotating (there is a wire, which connects the cooling fan assembly to turbo pump assembly...something like grounding!!!).. Kindly advice me what i can do now...?? thanks and regards, raj s.
