Re: coating thickness error tolerance

Hi,

Coating uniformity depends on substrate holder type (single or planetary rotation), chamber dimensions, evaporator position, coated surface shape and some other factors. For industrial coating machines with single rotated substrate holder coating uniformity less than 5% is usually specified. For machines with substrate holder double planetary rotation the thickness uniformity about or even less than 1% is available, sometimes the extra rotating mask is used. However it doesn't mean that you can obtain so high uniformity for any coating made of any materials. Uniformity also depends on evaporated material distribution in the chamber volume which may vary for different materials and during a time of evaporation. We usually obtain uniformity in mass production of e-beam evaporated multilayer dielectric coatings (not the thickness but optical properties, it is close but not the same) less than 2% in the chamber Dia.72"x72" with double planetary rotating substrate holder and rotating mask. But not for all coatings, for some of them less than 1%, for some - about 5%.

Best regards,

Vladimir Chutko

Hi,
This is my first post in the group. I want to know the tolerance in thickness variation (in nm) of Aluminium coating, acceptable and expected from professional and amateur coaters.

Mr Jan van Gastel in interferometry group has finished a mirror accurate to<5nm. So I think coating error introduced in 100 nm film thickness would be less than 1 nm. Is such precision achieved routinely by coaters in this group?
Thanks and with regards,

Hello Thomas. I'm right there with you on that.

Oddly, I don't think I've ever even posted to this list...I've been lurking for a while though. I hacked with some vacuum stuff years ago; I have an SEM here, but it's currently down due to lack of time. I'm working on moving to a place where I'll have a lot more workspace, and one thing on my to-do list is to put together a small, general-purpose vacuum system for pumping down glasswork. I have an interest in discharge tubes, homebrew vacuum tubes (yes, the thermionic kind!) and the like.

Regarding list management...my primary concern stems from the rumblings about Yahoo! Groups being shut down. It would border on criminal for a resource like this to disappear because of a corporate whim. When those rumors first started circulating several months ago, I had discussed privately with Ken the possibility of moving this forum to my servers, which are not subject to corporate whims, and have been around (and hosting mailing lists) a lot longer than Yahoo!'s. My network hosts the well-known LASERS list, for example, and a few others.

Let me be clear; I have no desire or intention to move this forum to my servers unless it's absolutely needed to ensure its survival. I'm viewing it as a "backstop" in case Yahoo! puts a bullet into its Groups system. Until (and if) that happens, I am happy to leave it as-is and assume a custodial role.

I have just added another moderator to the VacuumX Group. David McGuire, located in Florida USA, has expressed an interest in keeping the Group running smoothly.

Currently Thomas Janstrom in Australia is a co-owner of the Group with myself. I am moving on this summer if all goes well, Thomas is returning to studies at University and will be busily engaged there so please welcome Dave in his efforts to help keep the Group going.

So far we've been able to keep the group on-track and keep the bad guys out. I thank everyone for their participation, information, and being there to help those in need by answering questions etc...

Great bunch of guys here!

Vacuum Pumps, equipment sold...

Ken

As Javaguy mentioned, I have sold the diffusion pump stacks, roughing pumps, baseplate and misc other items. Will be delivering it all to him in a couple of weeks.

I have listed several small items on eBay that are not part of this sale and will be listing some more misc items and junk to clean out the barn. Once it's gone, I will be out of the vacuum hobby. It's been a nice run and I'm glad I've had a chance to meet you guys.

I'll be turning over the reigns to VacuumX once I get the remaining items I have sold or given away, whatever the case. Anone that might want to take over the ownership of the Group, contact me privately.

There seems to still be a lot of (though mostly silent) interest in keeping the Group open. I don't know what my Internet options will be when we relocate to Costa Rica so it would be prudent to make some arrangements ahead of time.

Thanks guys...

Ken - KB7H

Re: Vacuum pumps etc...

Just made a deal with Ken to take the rest of his hardware. It will give me a great head start in getting my own vacuum chamber built.

Thanks Ken.

Hi Ed,

I think the 6 inch is a CVC, I'll look to see if I can ID the 8 inch.

Javaguy,

I have a HyVac-28 and a Welch 1397 roughing pump. Both are in good operating condition, a little dirty from sitting in the barn for a few years and the oil is needing changed from absorbing moisture from the air.

I am going to clean, flush and supply a gallon of new vacuum pump oil with each pump. Crating them is no problem though they are very heavy items to ship. Specification are on the web - use Google to find.

Make me a fair offer for everything... both diff stacks and both roughing pumps. Okrahoma isn't that far from here and we have friends in Amarillo. Maybe it's time to visit our friends and deliver the goodies in the process?

Re: Vacuum pumps etc...

Paul...

I have 2 diffusion pump stacks available...

1. (bottom to top) 6 inch diffusion pump, cooled chevron baffle, electric controlled pneumatic gate valve, electric controlled pneumatic roughing and bypass valves, connecting spool, 20 inch s/s baseplate and possible chamber using a swimming pool filter tank.
Asking $250.00 for this stack plus shipping.

Also available for this stack or separately is the HyVac-28 roughing pump with 1HP (115V) motor and one gallon of new vacuum pump oil for $100.00 plus shipping.

2. (bottom to top) 8 inch diffusion pump, cooled chevron baffle, electric controlled pneumatic gate valve, electric controlled pneumatic roughing and bypass valves, connecting spool.
Asking $300.00 for this stack plus shipping.

Also available for this stack or separately is the Welch 1397 roughing pump with 1HP (220/115V) motor and one gallon of new vacuum pump oil for $200 plus shipping.

I am very willing to entertain offers for less (or more) for combined packages and am willing to consider delivery or meet half way for expenses incurred. I just don't want this stuff to get left for the trash man when I relocate sometime this summer.

I've already started listing the smaller vacuum stuff on eBay, when I run out of the smaller stuff to list these will follow.

Yes, I have 2 roughing pumps, a HyVac-28 and a Welch 1397 available. I have 2 gallons of Vacuum Pump oil I got on eBay that will go, one gallon with each pump. I thought we had this conversation already about the oil available on eBay?

I also have a small container of KRYTOX as well as about 1/2 gallon of Dow Corning 704 diffusion pump oil to sell.

I don't think it's worth my while to drive out to Illinois given that we have a working system here.

New member, a quick question.

mkoraypek

I stumbled upon this group when I was searching for MgF2 coating service suppliers. The whole vacuum coating technology is amazing, I hope I can experiment on this one day.

Here is my question: any members of this group provide a MgF2 coating service? I've got a badly damaged camera lens with various coating damages on internal lens surfaces. Would anybody be interested in coating bare lenses with MgF2 if I prepare (clean, strip, polish) and send them? How much would you charge for lets say 5-6 lenses, and one of them is cemented, would this cause issues?

Kind regards, and sorry if this is an odd question, please ignore if it is!
