T41 oscillating
5
Hello, When we last left Jerry with his intrepid T41, he was getting reports of bad, noisy transmit. It started suddenly during a QSO. Today, I hooked the T41 up to a dummy load - actually, a 500W 30dB attenuator. Piped the output of the attenuator into a spectrum analyzer and hit the transmit button. Without talking into the mic, I see over a watt coming out of the transceiver. Spectrum analyzer shows a messy wide signal approximately at the VFO frequency. Could U8 - the input receive analog switch - be slightly borked? Just enough so the transceiver oscillates when it gets "tickled" by the carrier? I'll give it a try. Becoming an expert at replacing that chip. This time, some protection. Four diodes and a capacitor. 1n4148's arranged shorting anything above two diode drops - to ground. A capacitor because the input of the analog switch is self biased to some intermediate voltage - probably 1/2 Vdd. Connected to the output end of C14/C24. I could connect the diodes to the input end of C14/C24 & save a cap, but then I wouldn't have that last bit of filtering. I can easily imagine a local broadcast band station generating a volt or so, and I want all the high pass filtering I can get. - Jerry, KF6VB

3d printable mic
I am working on a 3d printed mic case, still needs some tweaking. Not my design (above my pay grade) but I think I can make a few tweaks to STL files. Tim

New SI5340-based RF Board in development
23
In the spirit of posting efforts currently underway, I have been working on a new RF board and associated driver software. In a nutshell, the new board uses the Skyworks SI5340 instead of the SI5351. This change addresses several issues. The SI5340 offers rock solid performance from 100 KHz to 250 MHz with LVCMOS outputs (employed by the prototype RF board), dramatically reduced phase noise and jitter, much improved clock symmetry (upon which the performance of Tayloe mixers depends), and much simpler application-level control software (no mucking about with the PLL, Multisynth, or phase at the application level). The new RF board replaces the 5351 with the 5340, and restores true split operation (the SI5340 has four outputs, three of which are used for RX, TX, and CWTx). The most challenging part of the software was the algorithm for setting output frequency, that is, given a desired frequency, find near-optimal numerator and denominator values for the various dividers used within the SI5340. My software employs a mediant-based algorithm attributed (incorrectly) to Farey, and efficiently produces results comparable to those produced by ClockBuilder Pro (the stand-alone program for configuring Skyworks parts). Current status: 1) Driver and driver example code complete and tested with main board and SI5340 EVB 2) T41 software (forked from V66.9) patched to ifdef choice of SI5340 or SI5351 RF Board compiling and in test 3) New RF board hardware under construction (PCBs back from China; parts on hand) For the curious, prototype schematic and board pic are attached. 73, John Bennett AE0AM

Noise Figure and MDS measurements
The previous post on Test Equipment gave good thoughts on available equipment. Here is one that I don't think was covered for measuring the sensitivity of the receiver. It is a straightforward and reasonably accurate measurement method for Noise Figure and the related Minimum Detectable/Discernible Signal (MDS). It is practical to include this in any DSP based radio. A note on this method is at http://www.janbob.com/electron/SNRMeasure/SNRMeasure.html

T41 LPF Options
3
There is quite a difference in price in the Log Amp Detector and Diode Detector options. Before I chose the cheaper route, what is the performance difference I will see in the display and are both options now supported and selectable in the software? Also, the same question for the Digital Power report and the analog Power report options, what is the performance difference I will see in the display and are both options now supported and selectable in the software? Thanks, Jerry N KD4TNX

MF changes
12
Can anyone tell me if the changes made regarding the MF frequencies are documented anywhere? Were changes made in the BOMs or assembly manuals for the affected boards? I have been unable to find them. Thanks. Dave. W0DF

Strange 15 happenings
4
I was having fun working DX on 20 and 17M's today. Saw activity on 15, made a few calls noticed output in SSB was low. SWR was perfect (Steppir) so I decided to play with TX attenuation. Changed from 5 to 1. Display went wonkey on TX. Switched to CW and it stayed in CW after key up. Went back 20m's all good, same with 17. Back to 15 and same conditions, ran out of time so I did not reboot and start over. Did see anything weird when doing TX calibration. Will do more testing tomorrow. Tim W4YN

T41 with Polar Modulation
10
After learning that Hans Summers was at Dayton Hamvention promoting his QMX which can now operate SSB using Polar Modulation, this got me thinking. Has anyone considered a T41 using Polar Modulation? How difficult would the software be to implement? I am sure I can sort the hardware side of things. John, G0SDF

LPF question
4
The BOM for the LPF Filter board lists all of the caps as 200V but the schematic shows 100V. The 200V and higher caps are almost non existent on Mouser or DigiKey and the few values there are $1.00+ each. Are 100V parts acceptable for 100W? -- 73 to you! 73 Bob W3RDL Virus-free.www.avast.com

M5Stack Dial - ESP32-S3 Smart Rotary Knob
2
By way of https://makezine.com/products/boards/m5stack-dial/ I was just looking at this https://shop.m5stack.com/products/m5stack-dial-v1-1 With my limited programming skills it would be a coin toss if it ended up on the shelf of shame or in something useful but in the right hands this could be interesting, assuming it isn't too noisy.

Problem running Arduino on Linux under Kubuntu / Ubuntu
5
Somethings changed with a recent Ubuntu update. I tried launching the Arduino AppImage and got this: ./arduino-ide_2.3.6_Linux_64bit.AppImage [13415:0522/155036.803945:FATAL:setuid_sandbox_host.cc(158)] The SUID sandbox helper binary was found, bu t is not configured correctly. Rather than run without sandboxing I'm aborting now. You need to make sure that /tmp/.mount_arduinIn8mwB/chrome-sandbox is owned by root and has mode 4755. Trace/breakpoint trap (core dumped) Anyone else seen this and have a fix?

Muddy Audio
I should clarify that the "muddy audio" problem is not new with this version. The last version I was using had it also. - Jerry, KF6VB

T41 Web site update
5
The T41 Information site is live at https://t41sdrtransceiver.wordpress.com and we are getting a lot of traffic. So far, just since yesterday at noon, we have gotten over 400 visits and more than 1200 page views. I just added a new photo gallery of images gleaned from this site and other places. If you want to have your rig featured on the User page, send me a photo and short paragraph describing your experience. Send to albertfpeter@... Thanks, Al

New T41 Site Available
3
Hi Everyone, I have created, with Jack's help, a new site all about the T41-EP at: https://t41sdrtransceiver.wordpress.com This is an 'information and background site" for the T41, not an open forum - the SCHR (this site) is the place for posting comments/suggestions about the T41. I intend to post lots of photos of user-built T41 rigs. I have a few already included, but would like more. If I get enough, I will create a separate gallery page of just T41 builds. Photos should be sent to me directly at albertfpeter@... with a brief explanation. I reserve the right to edit any comments for brevity. Let me know what you think. Regards, Al Peter AC8GY

Help: Audio is pumping on bands 17 and 15.
24
The yellow LED next to the reset button on the Teensy board lights up brightly and dimly. And the audio is pumping most strongly on bands 17 and 15 at the same time. What's the problem? Only the main-board and the RF-board (equipped with a TX only) are connected. Regards, Wolfgang

T41 from AI6YM
2
Hi everyone. We have a radio club where I work. Last year we purchased a T41 kit from AI6YM. I understand it have v50.2 firmware on it. When trying to follow the Receive IQ calibration, from the latest T41 book (updated for v12 boards), we noticed that the menu is missing some functions and the display is messed up. Is the book written for v66.9 firmware? Here is what the display looks like. Thanks , Duane - K5CA

Could the FT8 mode also be integrated into the T41? It would also be nice if there was a way to set the time. Best regards, Wolfgang

JLCPCB Price Increase
25
Was curious tonight as to whether the China tariff situation was going to affect prices. The cost for 5 PCBs from JLCPCB went from $2 to $4; not that big a deal. Don't know about other fabricators. -- John P. WA2FZW
