R35 & R37 on the RF Board
5
Hi. I purchased a set of boards from Justin, AI6YM. I working on putting the RF module/board. Looking at the schematic, it reads that R35 and R37 are supposed to be 3.3K¦¸. Looking at the board, which has all the SMT populated, I noticed the 3.3k ¦¸ resistors have 0¦¸ soldered on top of them. Was this a mistake, or or should thy be 0¦¸? R40 and R42 have the 0¦¸ resistors in place. Thank you for your time. Duane - K5CA

More boards and kits info...
For those of you that ordered T41 board sets with the MAIN board in the set (A Full set of V12 boards, or an Upgrade set of $1 V12 boards), You got a pre-programmed ATTiny85 just like usual with the set purchase. HOWEVER, I may have put the part(s) in one of your other packages due to room constraints. Don¡¯t just throw the packing away without doing an inventory! If you ordered a 20W PA kit¡ remember to carefully remove the inner package from the pink bubble-wrap envelope¡ and the CAREFULLY slit the two recipe cards apart at the edge (slit the tape, don¡¯t cut the cards!). When you open the two cards¡ the parts are facing each other¡ and you can cut the cards apart then to keep the part numbers with the parts¡ easier to ID!. Do NOT remove the parts from the cards before you are ready to use them¡ and the do so individually. The FET and the Transistor look alike! I have only 3 more packages to wrap up and send. One is a large order in the USA and I¡¯ll get that one done tonight. One is for an RF board that I promised to mount the PE4302 parts for him (this is NOT a usual service at the moment). The last one is an invoice I sent out and have not been paid. Please note that I will cease taking orders as of the end of next week to allow time for some traveling and then attending FDIM and Hamvention. Dr. William J. TX IQ Cal question
3
I remember doing TX cal on 4Sq kit and it seemed straight forward. Believe we used CW mode back then. Current procedure calls for SSB mode setup using internal 750Hz tone. I can see results on SA and see changes while adjusting IQ, however my results look a bit different than in cal procedure pictures. I probably need to work on SA settings to get display tweaked properly. Just curious why we changed for CW to SSB. Tim W4YN

Update
Just a note on boards and kits¡ I¡¯m a little behind on getting the latest round of boards and kits out. The response in the last few weeks was so overwhelming that I needed to stop shipping on multiple occasions and put together more kits. Just yesterday I put together another 25 20W PA kits that took me the majority of the day. Most of the orders that did not include the PA kit have been shipped and you should be able to track it with the number that got sent to you. Those orders with the 20W PA I¡¯m working on today and I should have them all sent. I have two larger orders¡ one for over-seas and one USA that I will need to get boxes from the postal service to ship. That will happen Monday. My goal is to get everything out the door by Monday. I¡¯m also gearing up for FDIM and Hamvention so I¡¯ll see a lot of you there¡ we are inside this year¡ Building#4 (where you drop off your ticket stubs for the prizes) in spot #4111. More on this later and what I will be bringing. I¡¯ve talked to Al and he will be at our booth on a couple of days with a T41 operating and able to sign books and answer questions. Dr. William J. Book
4
All: Greg pointed out that Amazon (finally) has changed the ad on their page for our updated DSP book: Note that the publication date is April 16, 2025. The bad news is that we lost over 150 reviews where most (85%) were 5 Star reviews. That will hurt as that's a good rating for a technical book. So, if you like the book, please take the time to write a review. If you don't like the book, go ahead and write a review...just don't send it in! Jack, W8TEE -- Jack, W8TEE

Which book edition??
3
Al and I released an updated version of the book, but we didn't feel it was worth calling it a new edition. The problem is I've placed two different orders and was sent the wrong printing. That has been fixed now, even though the ad has an April 18, 2024 for the release. There are two obvious differences that you can use to tell if you're ordering the right edition. First, the T41 on the cover should be black, as shown below. Second, and more important, if you click on the Read Sample button below the book image and scroll down, you should see that it has A new chapter (Chapter 20 on Calibration). That chapter is new with the update and expands upon the information that was in Appendix C on earlier editions. Jack, W8TEE -- Jack, W8TEE

The T41 from 4SQRP and V11 boards.
9
All: Recent there was a negative post about the V11 boards and the T41 from 4SQRP. I got this private email from Neville Marr, ZL2BNE, who has been following the T41 from its inception. He has a T41 from 4SQRP and speaks positively about it. I asked him if I could re-post his email because I know there are a lot of 4SQRP radios out there and he wants everyone to know that it is a good radio that he uses on a regular basis. I, too, have a 4SQRP T41 and it is a very good radio. He gave me his okay to post his email. Jack, W8TEE =============== Hi Jack, We haven¡¯t communicated in quite some time but I continue to check-in on the softwarecontrolledhamradio group from time to time. I¡¯ve recently reviewed postings and one took my attention ¡ for the wrong reasons. /g/SoftwareControlledHamRadio/message/33358 The post was pretty disparaging of the V11 receiver performance, among other things calling it an intolerable toy radio. I see no point in giving such posts oxygen on the forum but I felt a need to let you know my experience is totally different. You will recall I was an early adopter of the T41 project, I had V10 boards made and did my own thing. You will also recall I was quite critical of some aspects of the project. I always had issues with the transmit side of my V10 T41 but never the receive side. The receiver worked from day one. In my case I don¡¯t hear any noise on rx with a dummy load connected. I can easily hear my Marconi sig gen set as low as it will go at -127dBm. It¡¯s a very good receiver. Over time I made a number of hardware changes to my QSE, I built two filters of my own design, one follows the QSE the other follows the PA. Final transmit change is adopting the K9HZ PA. Today my radio works faultlessly using Greg¡¯s T41EEE. I got everything where I wanted and started logging contacts in August 2023. I¡¯m not much of an operator but do put my creations on the air. I¡¯ve just interrogated my log to discover I¡¯ve logged exactly 100 contacts using my T41. Quite a cool number. I¡¯ve had the T41 on the air more times than that, mainly local nets, but all the same 100 in the log. Below is a breakdown of the 100. I¡¯ve worked every continent except Africia (Africia is notoriously difficult to work from NZ, South Africia is the rarest DX from NZ). So thank you for getting the T41 up and running. I am a little sad that V10/11 got supplanted by V12 because V10/11 is a very good radio. I do hope people can get V12 to a place where V12 T41 are on the air too. My T41 is my go-to radio, my daily runner. Cheers, Neville ZL2BNE -- Jack, W8TEE

OT cool new toy
I am teaching Electronics Merit Badge and did not want to take a lot of gear to meetings. I stumbled on to this and did not really expect much but it turned out to be very nice piece of kit. Much better quality than I expected. Best $100 bucks I spent in long time. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807265687076.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.5.1ab018029o7Qr8&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa Tim W4YN

Power Amp Efficiency
I have 3 ways of measuring power; Direct LPF output on Tek Scope, RMS voltage out of Pearson current monitor, an HP363 Taidacent power meter. I get 9.7 +/-0.9 watts out at 7.2MHz. My DC power in to the amp is 20.0 wt for an efficiency of 47%. Is that what others are seeing? dave, n3ds

Just curious. . .

But do you gain anything by populating 1 or 2 of the 8Mb SPI memory chips on the Teensy? Or do you loose some functionality by doing that? Just curious. Thanks, Duane - K5CA

Trying to build a AM Demod so I can see my CW signal
3
Noob trying to learn here: It looks like I need to build a demodulater to view my CW signal with my O-Scope. (I found a circuit that I can build, but it calls for 1n34A diodes. What would be a good substitute? I was thinking maybe a BAT46? I'm hoping to use this on a QRP rig. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Encoder question
3
V66.9. I'm using the encoders from my 4SQRP kit in my V12 but it skips a lot of counts unless I turn the knobs slow. Do I have a hardware problem or a software problem?

Attenuator problem
2
V66.9, V12.6 RF board: In the 'RF in atten' sub-menu I get the proper 3.3v outputs on pins 21-26 on U21, but 'RF out atten' doesn't show any outputs on pins 1-6. I'm missing something simple, right?

Need Solution
9
I got the main board working. When running the test program it finds the teensy hat, the switch panel and encoder boards. When I run the display test it comes back test completed but the screen stays blank. The screen did come one one time, turned off and back on no screen. I have resoldered the pins, tried ribbon cable and individual wires still nothing. Any suggestions? Tom

[AmateurRadioBuilders] [SoftwareControlledHamRadio] T41 Hardware Directions
5
¡°I have mentioned to Bill and Oliver that I would like to see a small PCB hold the 4 connectors (mic, PTT, headphones, and key) just because the current direct wiring makes the front look like a rat's nest. It's purely aesthetics for me and something most people will never see. ¡° I¡¯ve been working on this for a while but have tied it to an overall audio system. Here¡¯s what I have on the list (Comments welcome): For AUDIO OUTPUT: Stereo output for RX1 and RX2. Separate Line output with variable gain (TDA1308, TDA7050, TDA7313) Separate Headphone output variable gain/ headphone amp (LM4811, TPA6120, TDA7050, TDA7313). Speaker output with on-off and variable gain. 3+W amp for speaker output (TDA2030, LM4950). For AUDIO OUTPUT: 2x MIC input (front and back panel (TDA7309) Line Input (TDA7309) Connection boards: FRONT and BACK: Front: i. AUDIO: Mic, PTT in, Phones, ii. Key? iii. On/off Back: i. AUDIO: Mic, Line in, Line out, speaker (internal). ii. Key iii. PTT IN iv. KEY OUT (from LPF) v. ACC Connector (BAND0-BAND3 from LPF Inverted). vi. USB2 vii. RS232 This is all sitting in a box here waiting to proto it up and try. Dr. William J.
