Antenna Analyzer

Any thoughts to developing an antenna analyzer using the DDS VFO as the core of the analyzer?

I've already started it...that's where the photo came from (simulated data). Right now I have it working on a breadboard, but the new part of the circuit is on the homemade board you see in the photo. Farrukh is laying out a new board that will have the Nano/DDS/analyzer on one side of the board, and the header socket for a 3.95" color display on the other side. He's looking into the newer AD9851 chip, as that can go up to 70MHz, which would also allow 6M coverage. If we can get some quantity price breaks, it should be about $50 to build. I expect to write an article on it similar to the Forty-9er article in that it will have a separate construction manual and source code. I want to keep the Nano, but already I'm pressing on the memory limits, and that's without using the TFT display card's onboard SD card for data storage. The Teensy 3.0 would be a good choice, but I haven't been able to get it to work with the display and it's $20 versus $2 for a Nano.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Hi Jack,
I was wondering if you have a .ino on the analyzer. i am not looking for the big display just a 16x2 that just scans a single band logs the lowest swr i can probably back down from the large display. kitsandparts bridge ok for this?

I got really excited when I saw that page! Is that antenna analyzer kit still available? I did a quick Google search and didn't find anything.

hey Roy,
I have been looking at this one. the one from farraukh is more than i wanted. i am thinking instead of nulling to a dim led, reading the voltage on arduino and displaying it. the toroid is not frighting. i would replace that darlington on the right with a shottky diode to measure reverse and display it.? on 16x2 i2c display. I need to figure out hot scan the band store the lowest result.
have a look.

That will be released along with the article that is to appear in QST. No date set yet. Farrukh will handle the board sales. This board is a little larger and I believe he's going to sell it for $10.

Why not? If I'm writing an article and submit it to QST, I want all of that in place first. Also, this was a build for my club, hence the assembly manual. We do have a PCB, but I'm having the PCB redone for my talk at FDIM. That will likely also be sold in addition to the antenna analyzer board.

No bother. I know the PCB will be sold for sure. However, I really don't have anything to do with that, as Farrukh lays out the board and has it produced. I have asked him to redo the AA board to bring out more of the Mega 2560 pins to encourage experimentation with it. I will likely buy a bunch of them for my FDIM talk, probably at his cost. By the time you adding in the shipping costs of the fabricated board, his cost is probably around $5-6 each. I think he will sell those at $10, but that also includes domestic postage. He did make some kits available for the 49er, but I don't know his plans for the AA. He is super busy right now and I don't get much feedback from him right now.

It's a pretty neat project and the display is really quite good. I posted another shot of the display last March 28; it's one of the first photos in the album. If you buy all of the parts new, it's around $55 to build. We had 24 members from my club build it, which is a surprise since we built two for the club that members can use free of charge!

It does look like a neat project, the AA that is, which is why I got so excited. Plus it uses the Arduino, which I would like to learn more about before I get any older. I'm 69 and I don't have any extra brain cells to lose!? I've got a Sark100 clone to use but would love to build a antenna analyzer just for the experience, but build not design. . . . ?those brain cells ARE gone! :-))

This might sound like an ad, but I don't make enough off one book to buy a Big Mac. Still, you might buy a few Nanos and Mega 2560 Pro Mini's and start experimenting using the Arduino Project for Amateur Radio as a guide. You should be able to buy 4 Nanos for $10, but the Mega's will be $15 quantity 1. I bought 10 for $100, but I tend to use them up pretty quickly.

Anyway, go to Amazon, look up the book and then click on the cover to read the Table of Contents. That will give you an idea of what's in the book. There is considerably more explanation of how things work than in most books.

Keep me posted...

I got really excited when I saw that page! Is that antenna analyzer kit still available? I did a quick Google search and didn't find anything.

Hi Jack,
I was wondering if you have a .ino on the analyzer. i am not looking for the big display just a 16x2 that just scans a single band logs the lowest swr i can probably back down from the large display. kitsandparts bridge ok for this?

A new article in QST and maybe a board from Farrukh to make it even easier? ? Way to go, Doc!? Huh.? It LOOKS like one could carefully build it wiring point-to-point on perfboard, or maybe I'm missing something. ?

It would work on perf board. Ours is nice because the display plugs directly into our PCB. In the attached picture, the TFT display is on the bottom and it plugs into our PCB "from the bottom". You can see the AD9850 and Mega 2560 Pro Mini boards also plug into our PCB "from the top". It just makes things a little easier, but perf board would work.

Jack, I checked out the book and looked very interesting and so I bought it! I also got a book on programming the aurdino. Maybe there's hope that this old dog can still learn a few new tricks!

Thanks,
Roy
