Acrylic Case Source

A number of readers of the QST article wrote and asked where I got the acrylic case. Alas, Amazon is no longer carrying the case and I could not find a supplier who would sell in less than quantity 10. Well, yesterday I found virtually the same case at the Container Store, a chain with stores all over the country. They seem to have two sizes, and both have a hinged lid, which I like, as it makes it easy to get in the case, yet the display is protected from the elements. True, the lid can flop open pretty easily, but I found some pinhead-sized rare earth magnets online. By countersinking and aligning two of these magnets and gluing them in place, the lid stays shut but without a "visible" latching mechanism. BTW: I made a flat-forehead mistake doing this. On my first try, I forgot that like poles on a magnet repel. End result: a magical floating lid for the case!

Anyway, go to their web site (containerstore.com) or try:

http://www.containerstore.com/s/acrylic-square-hinged-lid-box/d?productId=10031027&q=acrylic%20hinged%20lid

?

The cost is about $9 for the small one (6x6x2) and $19 for the large one (12x12x2). I'll be getting one of the smaller ones for the antenna analyzer project and will let you know about it.

For mine, I used Jameco.com part 141841.? It is an ABS case with a clear top.? For drilling holes I used an Irwin step drill bit and the plastic was a pleasure to pierce.

Bob:

That's the same case I used for the Beta version of my Antenna Analyzer. They are nice and they also have a rubber gasket seal on them.

Nice work.? Thanks for all your efforts of evangelizing Arduinos for hams.? Next month I will give a talk on the Forty-9er here in Silicon Valley.

Bob,

Do you ever get to Maker Faire in San Mateo?? For about six years we have been presenting "Not Your Grandpa's Ham Radio" there.? Maybe you've been by our booth??? If you HAVEN'T been to the Faire you really need to go -- and that goes for ALL hams who are interested in homebrewing.? Of course, Arduino and "Arduino Projects for Amateur Radio" have been a big part of what we present.? The idea is to get non-hams interested in the more modern aspects of ham radio.? We aren't just a bunch of old guys in our rocking chairs talking about our ailments on 75 M phone!

If you are going to Pacificon, I will be doing a pitch there on Maker Faire -- trying to get more hams involved, showing off the non-traditional aspects of our hobby.?

On a side note, I met Jack through presenting a project at a Maker Faire forum at San Mateo a few years back.? I was approached by one of his publishers to co-author the Arduino Projects book, and the rest, as they say, is history!?

BTW -- I agree wholeheartedly with your comment on Jack!!!? I am? forever grateful that we hooked? up on our projects.

All:

You may note realize it but Dennis is the brains behind the ham radio projects that appear in the book. Years ago I co-authored another book and vowed never to co-author again. I am so glad I broke that vow...Few people work as hard as Dennis does to spread the word, plus having the EE talents to augment that zest.?

Thanks again, Dennis!

Thanks, Dennis, for the personal touch.

I moved to SIicon Valley 5 years ago and attended MakerFaire 2 years in a row.? I shall return, but this year I went on a ham radio vacation to Jalama Beach instead.? Five guys and 5 antennas.? Next year I will host a client convention in North Dakota in May.? So, I may not make it.? I enjoy the Faire, but am a busy guy with work, hobbies and family demands.? I golf every weekend.

I will definitely attend Pacificon like I did last year, and will make a point of seeking you out.

Hiroki Kato

How can one convert the 49er+VFO kit for 20 or 17 meters? Is it just a matter of using a different value combination of Lx and Cx Fig A2 (page 6) of Jack's Assembly Instruction Manual? If so, what are the values should one use?
Thanks for any advice.

This was also on the site and looked closer to the size I want:

I'll see if the Container Store in Frisco has it when I visit the kids over Labor Day.

I've been trying to find a suitable case here in the UK.
I can ship from the Container Store store in the US but I'd be absolutely crazy to do it.

The case would cost me $10.34 (purely because i'm in the UK I guess) instead of $8.94 but the additional shipping and taxes come to - wait for it ,

$40.77 ! ! ! ! !

A total of $51.11 would be simply crazy. Mine will be going in a metal box instead.

This looks promising and the shipping might be reasonable.

Slim; I just made a metal enclosure for mine?by using the metal from a old desk top computer power supply housing.? The ends and top will be made from clear plastic, showing off my handy work, hi hi.? 73, de Karl, KO8S
