Question
If you have built a Forty-9er, I'm wondering what the furthest contact you've made is and, if you recall, what was your RST. In the QST article I said that I was going to put my Forty-9er on display with a sign saying that it can be built for about $50. I'm sure I will be asked how far it can communicate and the more reports I can give, the more I will feel like I've met my goal. My furthest contact was about 700 miles with a 559, but I haven't had much operating time lately. Let me know!? 73, Jack, W8TEE |
Well Jack, until I read my March 2016 issue of QST and the article on the 49-er, I had never heard of this radio and I have been a QRP enthusiast ever since I built my Heathkit HW-8!? I immediately went to Ebay and ordered the 49-er kit.? About three weeks later, and a couple components short, I had it assembled and on the air on 7.023 and it was working!? I found that wearing head phones and calling CQ with about 1.8 watts wasn't the best use of my time so I decided to order a small audio amplifier kit from Ebay.??With the audio amplifier in use, I could do other things around my shack until I heard a station call CQ on my frequency, this was much more?effective.??I had several QSO's there, and decided to re-crystal it for 7.030, the QRP frequency which even turned out to be more productive.? In the first 12 QSO's in my log, and 7 states, I guess that NH and MA from my QTH in MI would be my greatest distance with 1.8 watts and a dipole antenna.? One of my QSO's was with another 49-er in Ohio.? My signal reports were from 339 to 589 with two QSO's nearly 30 minutes long! It was at this point, that I decided to order another 49-er kit and do the build per the article in QST.? That is were I am today, stopped because of what appears?to be?a faulty 360 mini regulator while I await 10 of them from a supplier on Ebay.? 73, de KO8S, Karl |
Great info and can't wait to hear how much things change when you add the VFO capability. It will make a huge difference! Jack, W8TEE From: "ktschwab@... I hope you have read the forum posts about the problems with the 360 mini regulator...? It's most likely not faulty! You just have to turn it hard to get the wiper past the component next to it... I had that problem and once I figured out that you do have to force it (just a little) it was fine! 73 de AB6UI Brian |
Brian, you are correct on this; the mini-360 that I received in my kit had this very problem!? After reading this post from you, I could see that the wiper was hitting the nearby component.? When I tried to turn it beyond this spot, the wiper came off of the pot!? But, I just received a package of 10 of these in the mail, and they did not have this wiper problem.? I set one of the new ones to the 5 volts off of the board, and then I replaced the bad one on the board, rechecked the 5 volts, and all is now well and I am now moving?on with the build.? Thanks again, 73, de Karl, KO8S

Hi Karl:
I'm working on a new project with Farrukh and we use the buck converter on it, too. I was trying to adjust the bc to get 5.7V and had the Phillips screw just pop off! Put a new one in and managed to do the same thing...again. Put a third one in and sslllooooowwwllllyyy adjusted the voltage. That one worked. It seems that some are "stuck" in position at the factor while others are not. I guess slow and easy is the order of the day. Jack, W8TEE |

Hi Jack; Keep the projects coming using the Buck converter, I now have 9 of them left as I ordered a batch of 10 for a great price, hi hi!? Looks to be a very nice little device, if it doesn't fall apart, we just have to go very easy when adjusting them.? 73, de Karl, KO8S On Monday, July 4, 2016 11:12 AM, "jjpurdum@... Hi Jack, ? You wanted to know the best DX that folks have worked with the 49er. The best DX, so far,? using my 49er is Brazil, RST 559. I regularly work into the Western USA, and hear Europe all the time at night here in Maryland near Washington DC. My unit is working great now, and the K2ROW software and hardware mods are working very nicely. My antenna is an Inverted Vee up 40 ft in the center and 20 feet on the ends. I look forward to hearing about your upcoming projects. 72, Marc N4DR |
Marc: Nice!! That's the best I've heard so far. I've been up to my butt in alligators lately so haven't had much time to operate. Still, it's nice to see that a fairly inexpensive rig can lead to some serious fun. Thanks for sharing! Jack, W8TEE From: "mapn4dr@... [SoftwareControlledHamRadio]" To: SoftwareControlledHamRadio@...
