Mystery of R-0 ZERO

I completed my 1st 49er DDS VFO several weeks ago and its working great. (see photo)? I am in the process of putting together a 2nd one?so ordered another 49er kit from EBAY.?? This one is slightly different.. It has an extra resistor R-0.??R-0 is right next to C-8 on the PWB and has 10K in the silk screen.? Since its not on the schematic I am confused.? Has anyone else run into this?

Email the designer and he will help. Forgot his call. The one who sells the vfos. See March QST for info.

Jack, you've gone thru a lot with me and others about the TWO errors on your excellent article!

I'm thoroughly enjoying the tinkering time, using my scope, etc.

No rush to make a QSO, but I'm getting close.

I hope you are enjoying retirement as much as me.

No missing of the ET department at UNCC. They DROPPED the computer emphasis when I left!? For real! ? Guess I ?didn't "leave my mark" there. 21 years there.

In trying to track this mystery down I found that?R0?goes to Pin 3 of U3 to ground and apparently nowhere else?? Obviously why I had no audio... So I lifted R0 and added a jumper wire from L1 and C8 to pin 3 of LM386 and now it is working.?
The ebay seller was tomtop.wholesaler.?So?you know what to look for I have attached a photo with a close up of R0?

Hope this helps anyone else that receives a board with R0

Whoops. Thought you were doing the March QST project.
What xcvr are you using and how did you add that vfo you mentioned to it? ?Progress? ?73. W4GHV Bo?

Not that is really odd. Why would the kit distributer make that change? Thanks for the heads up. Cool that you found the problem, worked out the issue, and fixed it.

?

Haven't started on my own transceiver yet. Got a couple small kinks to work out in the VFO, then I'll start on the rig. Got another rig kit on the way and down the road put it on 20m. I'm sure I'll pull out what little hair I have left making that happen.

?

Till later

Hank K5HDE

Did you do the March QST QRP XCVR or what??
I bought my parts from the sources in the article not eBay.
How did you interface the eBay vfo to the 49er?
73,Bo W4GHV?

I'm not sure why you needed the jumper wire?? I believe I have the exact same PCB as you.? There is a PCB trace from the top of C8 (junction of C8/L1) that goes to Pin 3 of the LM386.? It is partially blocked in the photo you posted, but I believe it is there.? R0 is in parallel with C8 and both are across the input of Pin 3 of the LM386 to ground.? I did not install R0 on my 49er.

Dave, W0DF

Yes I did March QST QRP 49er XCVR project but did not use the sources listed in it...?? The 49er board I have is? identical to the one described in the article with the exception of R0...
In talking to Farrukh there are a few different versions out there...
Bill

Keep me posted on your progress with the 20M rig!

Bill

For some reason when I "ohmed" There was no continuity from top of C8 (junction of C8/L1) to Pin 3 of the LM386.? So until I added that jumper I had no audio... Once I did it worked fine...
Thanks, Bill

Bo Barry

Whoops, still confused here. Thought you were talking about the VFO FROM eBay, which sounds different from the one in the article, from what I found on eBay from that seller.
As for the 49er, I'll look at it. I've noted a couple different versions, the schematic and board versions are different.
Maybe I'll figure out something.
Last question, is the eBay vfo the same as used in the article?

No. The VFO we did for the article is based on the design by Dennis Kidder, W6DQ, who was co-author with me on the Arduino Projects?for Amateur Radio book. Farrukh modified Dennis' design when he added a second buffer transistor.

I built my radio per the March QST article.??I did?buy the??PCB and Parts Kit from K2ZIA but I bought most of my components from BangGood.com.? They had the AD9850 DDS for about $10 and the NANO for $3 with free shipping.?

To answer your final question... No the complete VFO boards they sell on EBAY are not the same as the ones in the article.

Bill

Thanks for clearing things up for me. A little slow at times. But when you mentioned tomtom or whatever on eBay, I checked their VFOs to see what you were using. :) ? As for the 49er, its the most cloned thing alive! I even saw one with wi-fi in it! Back to tinkering with the 49ers.? Thanks Bo

Hi Bill,

I am having the same kind of 40 9er board infront of me. V2.1.

No RF Signal to be heard.

Replaced the R0 and jumpered from C8 to Pin3 of U3 and jumperd from L1 to U3 Pin 3.
No success.

Can you please give me your voltage readings from U3 of Pin 1 to 8.

Thanks and 72/3 de sTef

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

FIXED IT!

L1 100 uH was faulty.
Tested with my PEAK ATLAS40 LCR Meter. This piece is dead as dead can be.

I was lucky I just order some 100mH cokes for some other project.
Now the sensitivity of the RX is about 40uV.
I am using an ELECRAFT XG3 signal generator for signal tracing and testing.

The audio is still a bit quiet. But at least I can hear stations and my signal generator.
See what else can be done to get this Chinese wreck a bit better!

I am going to complain at the Chinese seller.

Good luck to you all.
