TTiny85 and Revers Polarity Protection
Fellow ham and I are starting the main board consy. Following Dr. Bill's comprehensive instructions we are a little confused regarding the use of Reverse Polarity Protection along with the TTiny85. Option 3 states "...ATTiny85 was shipped with your V012 board sets. If you don't want to use this module, please populate the two parts shown in the blue box on the schematic and blue on the BOM..." Does this mean the TTiny85 provides Polarity Protection? I am thinking that if I don't want to use the TTINY85, then I should install the parts in red.
Hope this makes sense

You have to choose between the ATTiny85 part of the circuit and the reverse polarity protection part -- you can't install both parts because they will interfere with each other. If you install the ATTiny85 part, you won't have reverse polarity protection.
?
So you are correct that if you don't want to use the ATTiny85, you must install the reverse polarity components (Q1,D5,R16).

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI think Oliver answered this perfectly but to reiterate¡ ? The Main board was designed so that when building it¡ you can select ONE of TWO options. ? OPTION 1:?? You can select the Reverse Polarity option¡ which is essentially the kit that Oliver and I are selling built into the Main board.? It does not allow reverse voltage to flow if you connect your radio backwards.? If you select this option, you CANNOT do option #2. ? OPTION 2:? This option is the soft-on-off approach to controlling the power to the radio.? Push the momentary contact button once and the radio comes on.? Then, later, push the button again momentarily and the power goes off¡ but before it does, it can run routines in the radio to do shutdown stuff¡ like put up a splash screen, save things you have selected to the memory card, etc.¡ then turn off¡ until the next push on again.? You don¡¯t get the reverse polarity protection of OPTION #1 using OPTION #2¡ BUT you CAN add one of our stand-alone reverse polarity kits and essentially get both for less than $10. ? The schematic show part positions for both options¡ and the BOM and build instructions have BLUE writing for one option and RED for the other.? The ATTiny85 is for OPTION #2 and was selected because it took up less board space than the flip-flops needed otherwise to do the same thing¡ and is programmable (!) for software timing and other things using its spare pins (like turning on and off the display at a different time¡ sequencing). ? ? ? ? ? Michael, Please re-read Dr Bill's message carefully!? His final paragraph clearly states that Option #2 is implemented using the ATTiny85. Larry - AC8YE

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýUm no.? You USE the ATTiny85 for OPTION #2.? You DON¡¯T use the ATTiny85 for OPTION #1.? That as easy as you can say it. ? Dr. William J.
