Re: boards and kits and stuff

I hope you got the M version.? The C version is only specified to 25 MHz.
?
Also, remember there is a potential software solution to boost the Teensy drivers.
That will require drilling into the device specification and writing some low level code.
The TeensyDuino does not provide support for the faster and more powerful modes the GPIO is apparently capable of.

I use these ferrite sleeves for ribbon cables. Seems to work FB.

Re: boards and kits and stuff

Another wacky, but successful solution is to hand wire the display with the SPI signals separated by the ground/power lines.? I used the following order successfully on an 8.5" cable:
?
1. SCLK (gray)
2. GND (white)
3. VCC (black)
4. CS (brown)
5. VCC (red)
6. MISO (orange)
7. GND (yellow)
8. MOSI (green)
?
The display and Main board have a few other ground connections that could be used to make this more robust, but I didn't try that after this worked with just the display dedicated connections.

Re: boards and kits and stuff

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Well, the ISO7241 is a specially designed SPI buss buffer/ isolator/ driver chip¡, it plugs into the T41 display socket on the main board (close to the Teensy) and the display cable plugs into it.? We know that the problem with the display lines are the poor SPI line driver transistors on the Teensy.? This essentially puts a much higher power (lower impedance) driver/ buffer after, but close to those transistors¡? PS thinks this was genius¡ I¡¯m thinking it was more desperation in searching for and finding it.? ?Short J3 and leave U2 off if the display is 3.3V.? Leave J3 open and add U2 if its 5V.? Super simple.

Hi Bill-

?

Is your board placed at the display end?? It seems like it is more of a "buffer board" rather than a driver board, if so.
I'm trying to visualize why it works.

The driver board seems to extend that to 6 feet (I can only measure the effect on a scope, not with the display)¡ someone else will give me the real story.

I've continued my T41 v12 display experiments.? A 9mm clamp-on ferrite worked with my 5.5" ribbon cable.?

?

It didn't work with the 11" or 15" cables I had on hand to test.? So somewhere between 6" and 11" seems to be the limit for this method.

My rig with 7" display is working ok for most part. (PA needs some tweaking)

I have a 6" ribbon cable but it has ferrite sleeve. It was freezing up but that was several FW versions ago.

I can try the driver with and with out ferrites on ribbon cable. (not sure if it would freeze up with existing cable and no ferrite)?

I have a v12 Main board where the 5-volt display works with a 3.5" cable but fails with a 5" cable.? I've done some experiments.? The display works if the ribbon cable wires are separated.? I've successfully tested the display with separated wires up to 9" long.? It looks like crosstalk on the signal wires is a problem.? I'm still experimenting.

Re: Tiny Ten Transceiver

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Well¡ Noise.? Here are some things Oliver and I did with the T41 RF board to make the sensitivity and noise figure spectacular for the T41¡

?

  1. 4 layer board with V+ bus and GND inside to shield the layers.? Use software to work Impedance.? Isolate LO lines.
  2. Bypass the CRAP out of the power bus¡ plenty of chokes.
  3. I found some extremely low noise instrument amps for the Salen filters and followers¡ at least 10 db better than what most used.? Keeps the s/n very low.
  4. Very low noise front-end RF amplifier and very low gain (it could be increased if needed).? Gain could be increased by 10-15db if wanted.

?

What else could be done?? Most noise after that from above comes in through the A/D and D/A¡¯s.? If I were going to upgrade the anything in this area¡ two things come to mind.? Higher performance A/D and D/A parts (but they will be a lot more expensive LTC2217 etc.)¡ and much lower noise power regulators to use with the A/D and D/A¡¯s (which is where most of the noise comes from since the signal gets referenced to an internal ref voltage or the original Vcc).? I would use the Linear LT3040, LTC3045, etc. where the PSSR is better than the existing noise level.? These things are at least 30 db better than those Murata devices discussed here¡ and maybe 20 db better than a standard LDO linear regulator.

?

I looked for a better mixer but there are very few parts as good as the 3253.

This is another update on my Tiny Ten transceiver, and particularly one trying to understand noise figure issues with the receiver side. ?I have done noise figure and distortion measurements and posted data. See

down near the bottom at, "Dynamic Range, Noise Figure and Distortion" and at, "Noise Figure of the Mixer Alone."

This receiver circuit is closely related to that of the T41 and other QSD projects, so maybe there is other noise figure data around to compare with?? I'm still hunting for the source of about 10 dB of extra noise! ? Any thoughts on this?
