Re: No SSB output

Is the 750hz and 2 tone frequencies generated in Audio Hat?
Still mucking around trying figure out why no carrier in SSB mode.

Re: New book

I will check back later this week, and if it looks correct I will order, and of course you will get a review.

Re: New book

Oddly, two people have written that they received the right book. Even harder to figure out now. I just went through the entire process again and updated everything, including the ad narrative (which has 4SQRP still selling a kit). I should get word back within 72 hours that all is well. The bad news is that about 165 very good book reviews will no longer be tied to the book...it starts over.

T41-2 and K9HZ Power Amplifier Measurements

I've been working on a system to accurately evaluate HF linear power amplifiers.? It took quite a while to figure out how to get the system working.
Here's the first tangible results in the form of a spreadsheet:

There are 3 worksheets.? The first "PA out cal" is nothing more than measurements between reference plane 1 (PA output), reference plane 2 (radio output), and the input of the power meter.
Sheet #2 is the "Small Balun" version of the T41-2 Power Amplifier (final + driver).? Sheet #3 is the K9HZ amplifier I built here a couple of years ago.
?
PEP output powers are not as high as expected.? Remember to halve the PEP numbers to get average power.? Quite low!
?
Note that the K9HZ PA drops to below 2 watts average power on the higher bands.? The amplifier was tuned up according to the build instructions.
The critical thing seems to be the bias current for the final transistors is probably too low at 250mA each.
?
I've seen comments by others that the part used in the final amplifier (Mitsubishi RD16HFF1) needs quite a bit of quiescent bias current for decent linearity.
Thus I've tuned the T41-2 Power Amplifier to a bias of 700mA each.? You can see the total current drain in the last column of the measurements.
?
I would be interested to compare my measurements to other's evaluations.? Here is a video summary of the measurement system and procedure:

Re: New book

Nor should you. But the problem is that the ad shows the new cover:
Inline image
and I can't figure out how that happened since we updated it April 4th. After 2.5 hours on the phone with Amazon and Kindle Direct, they don't know either.

New book

ALL:

Has anyone received a copy of the new T41 book? The new version supposedly became available after April 4th and has a black T41 on the cover and Appendix C on Calibration has been expanded to a new chapter (#20). If so, please let me know, as I have ordered review copies for Al and myself twice now, and they have sent the old pre-April 4th version.

Thanks!

If you take the Mic wires off the pins on the hat and just place your finger on Hat PIN 4 and key the radio, you will see a 60 cycle pattern in the display and hear that in the transmitted signal.? If not, there is something up with either the firmware, a selection in the menu (try a different EQ), or the hat itself.

Re: The T41 from 4SQRP and V11 boards.

Thanks Bill
?
Don't worry about it.? I'll find some boards somewhere.? It's only the V10/11 QSE and maybe QSD boards that I would use.
?
Good luck with your sales.

Re: The T41 from 4SQRP and V11 boards.

What I believe is an "Experimental Platform" means more modules.? Smaller chunks of circuitry for specific functions.? Each module should be relatively easy to build and test compared to
a board which includes two or more major functional blocks.? This keeps it in the context of amateur radio and building stuff in the garage with limited test equipment.
?
Thus T41-2 is even more modular than the original T41.? The Main board does not include the Si5351 or the audio amplifier.? Those are pushed off to external modules.
The ADC and DAC modules are retained, rather than built into the board as in V12.? This gives the flexibility of swapping out with future higher-performance modules.
Even the power amplifier is modular, with separate boards for the driver and final amplifier (still in development).

Re: The T41 from 4SQRP and V11 boards.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi Harry, Thanks for the note.

?

I just checked my records and I sold a total of 218 full sets of V10/V11 boards (plus odds and ends of full sets).? But that was two plus years ago.? I may still have sets of V10/V11 bare boards in the recycle box¡ I¡¯ll dig around to see if I can find some for you because the demand for the V10/V11 sets has dried up as of the V12 release.? In any case, the GERBERS for the V10 and V11 boards are all available at no cost on my GITHUB.? The 4SQRP boards (+GERBERS) are not available to me so I can¡¯t support them as of now.

?

Beyond that, I¡¯ve sold 1,200+ sets of V12, and 150+ in stock that I will sell at Hamvention in about a month.? Last year I sold 200 sets at FDIM and HamVention alone in just 4 days, and I expect to do that and more this year, since I now have an inside booth (4111 for those who will attend). ?I will take paper orders if I run out (I expect that will happen because I only have so much space in my luggage).? I will also be selling the latest T41 book (signed copies) from Jack and Al at Hamvention in my booth (NOT at FDIM where Jack and Al will be selling the book).

?

I won¡¯t be able to support older versions of the T41 past free GERBERS and documentation.? The cost of doing so is prohibitive.? I have thousands of US dollars tied up in parts and boards¡ and can only support so much.? I don¡¯t know if Greg supplies boards for your V10/V11 projects or not¡ I don¡¯t really follow what he does (and hence can¡¯t/ don¡¯t/ won¡¯t comment on it). ?I do see some new directions on the horizon for the T41 after V12.? The RF performance is outstanding¡ now to supercharge the user interfaces and the I/Q processing parts.

Thanks for the long list of specs of the T41-V12.

I suppose that Andy G8HCK passed on my inquiry to him for a couple of V10/V11 QSE PCBs and you may be wondering why I¡¯m looking for such old technology.? I¡¯ve been using my original V10 QSE board so much for hardware development that it is starting to fall apart with all the cut traces, solder jumpers and extra mounting holes.?? Fortunately, it still works in its original form.

For my purposes, the V12 RF boards are too dense for much hardware experimentation, particularly with 4 layer boards.?? I feel that they don¡¯t encourage the original ¡°EP¡± concept that Jack and Al first promoted.? I see the V12 concept as almost a pre-production prototype for a commercial radio with very tight specs.? I really admire the way that your team are striving to make it all work and I wish you all every success.

My T41 interests now lie in the direction which Greg KF5N is taking both for hardware and software development.? Of course it is a positive sign of an on-going healthy project like the T41-EP that it can and does evolve in several directions and long may that continue !
