Re: Audio Hat Hangup

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

First things first.? If you load the I2C scanner software, does the audio hat respond at address 0x0A on WIRE like it should¡? ?If not, concentrate your resoldering efforts around Pins 18 and 19¡

V12 Boards

Ver 50.2 SW?

All is working no freeze up or glitches since installing ferrite sleeves on ribbon cable.

However if I install the audio hat it never finishes boot up before program stops with partial screen.

Tried new extender, new audio hat (2) same issue each time.

I reflowed the leads on Teensy female headers (may need to do this again)

I can install Audio hat with a pair of long pin female headers to eliminate and doubt that extender is issue no help.

Could it be SW? I will pull main board and go over all the solder pads to see if that helps.

Other wise all good.

I had 64 beta working at one point but after reloading a second time it hangs up. (I cleared the memory each time)?

Justin's manual has a similar table in it, but not the wire lengths. Because the BPF's use the smaller wire, the wire length in Kit and Parts should be very close to what you need. For example, L091 calls for a T37-6 core with 25 turns. From their table:

?

? ??????? T-37 Core???????????? Length

24

2.3??1.7??31.9??242??14.00"

3.0??2.4

2.8??2.3??39.2??301??17.00"

3.3??2.7??20.00"

26

2.7??2.0??37.4??284??15.00"

3.5??2.8

3.3??2.7??46.0??354??18.25"

3.9??3.2??21.50"

?

25 turns on a T-37 core takes 14.5". (Simple average of the turn count.)? I would wind one core and see how that works out for the pigtail leads. Adjust as needed.

Justin's manual has a similar table in it, but not the wire lengths. Because the BPF's use the smaller wire, the wire length in Kit and Parts should be very close to what you need. For example, L091 calls for a T37-6 core with 25 turns. From their table:

?

? ??????? T-37 Core???????????? Length

24

2.3??1.7??31.9??242??14.00"

3.0??2.4

2.8??2.3??39.2??301??17.00"

3.5??2.8

3.3??2.7??46.0??354??18.25"

3.9??3.2??21.50"

?

25 turns on a T-37 core takes 14.5". (Simple average of the turn count.)? I would wind one core and see how that works out for the pigtail leads. Adjust as needed.

I made up my own table. I just put one turn around the core, marked it with a sharpie. Then measured it. Then made up a spreadsheet, adding 2 inches to each
length for pigtails. It came out pretty close.

Re: Software for Chapter 9 AT with Graphical SWR Analyzer

Hi Jack
?
I had a look at the file posted on 7/15/21 but its the same file as I already have downloaded.
AT.h has no reference to "struct grafix" I can't see it mentioned anywhere in the code.
?
Anyway I currently have had another issue its do do with finding the correct EEPROM.h file
in AT.h there is the line below
#include <EEPROM.h> ? ? ? ? ? ? // This is the STM32 EEPROM library, not Teensy or Arduino
The ide initially finds? the original AVR EEPROM.h and not the STM32 version.
?
Which EEPROM library did you use?
?
I searched the STM32 packages to find a EEPROM.h file and tried this line using an absolute path
#include "C:\Users\djcle\AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\stm32duino\hardware\STM32F1\2022.9.26\libraries\EEPROM\EEPROM.h"
This finds a library BUT this library has a line
#include <wirish.h>
So I don't think it is the correct library.
On my system wirish.h is at C:\Users\djcle\AppData\Local\Arduino15\packages\stm32duino\hardware\STM32F1\2019.6.14\cores\maple\wirish.h
But the IDE does not find it.
?
Even more confusing there seems to be two STM32F1 libraries dated 2019.6.14 and 2022.9.26
I assumed the later version would be best but it has no wirish.h file
?
I am confused about how you get the IDE to find the correct Library when there are multiple libraries of the same name.
Putting in an absolute path only works if the library does not have an? #include to yet another file.
I can't see any way round this problem short of replacing every #include <.......> with a #include "absolute path ......"
But then the code would be difficult to port to a different environment.
?
Any advice would be most welcome.

Re: T41 BPF results

I have not done all the bands but those match closely with what I have done.
I also do not see much change messing around with turns spacing.
On to LPF's to see how they come out.
Tnx for all the work guys.

Re: T41 BPF results

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I¡¯ve made these changes to the assembly manual and the BOM for the BPF¡ Looks very good.? The loss looks like about 3db maximum and that is easily made up by the RF amp in the front end.? Also, that loss could easily be die to the switches (guess I can test that in bypass mode as that had no filter/ loss elements but does have the two switches).

?

I¡¯ll add a loss table (max loss per band) if anyone makes those measurements¡

?

This would be a nice exercise for the LPF too¡

I measured and tweaked the inductance for every core and ended up with values that often differ from the recommended values. You can find a fill write up with all the details of the core windings and a comparison of each filter to the ELSIE simulation on my blog here:

Re: T41 BPF results

These are great, Oliver. If it's okay with you, could you send me the hi-rez versions of the graphs? Al and I would like to include them in the book.

BTW, I tweaked the toroids in the LPF board to match their table values. As it turns out, they are very close as is. I fiddled with the turn spacing on a few, but did not have to add or subtract turns for any toroid. I've attached the table. Below is the first band in the table to illustrate what the file contains:

Band Inductor Type (Core) ????Turns ???? Wire Length

160M ???? L3 ????????????T68-2 (Red) ????????30 ????????????25.00¡±

????????????? L14 ????????????T68-2 (Red) ?????? 28 ????????????23.50¡±

????????????? L25 ????????????T68-2 (Red) ????????30 ????????????25.00

The wire length is taken from the Kits and Parts table () but I changed the wire length to account for the #20 gauge wire that is suggested if you plan to use Bill's 100W PA. (The K&P table is for #26 gauge wire and the 20W PA.) I also added about an inch to each length so you have enough for generous pigtails. Alas, the Crochet Hook Method for winding cores doesn't lend itself to the heavier gauge and small core diameter. Just take your time and you'll be fine.

I will also be posting the table to the SCHR site.

Re: CAT Transmit

All:

The final version of the code is about to be released by Al and I and we are turning it over to Oliver to care for it in the future. There are coding style differences that some people will disagree with, and that's fine. Jerry has be active in working with the code and prefers another style. What follows is my response to some of the questions he raised.

=============

It is kinda a matter of choice and style. As to finding function prototypes, I have tried to maintain those alphabetically in the SDT.h header file. I've done the same for globals. The problem is that more than one person is editing the code and header file(s).

Also, you landed on one of my pet peeves: the confusion between the terms "define" and "declare". They are not the same terms. You said:

A class definition doesn't assign storage.

That is incorrect. From the 2nd edition of the K&R C book, page 210:

??? Declarations specify the interpretation given to each identifier; they do not necessarily reserve storage associated with the identifier. Declarations that reserve storage are called definitions.

The first sentence above means that a declaration creates an attribute list for each variable and stores it in the symbol table. Because declarations do not allocate storage for the variable, that attribute list will NOT contain an entry that specifies where in memory to find that variable. This memory location is called the lvalue of a variable. (What a variable contains is called the rvalue. The terms lvalue and rvalue are likely hangovers from assembly language programming for location (lvalue) and register (rvalue) concepts.) It is only after a definition of the variable that it has an lvalue that can be added to the attribute list found in the symbol table.

If anyone still thinks they are the same, then have them explain the need for the C extern keyword. The extern keyword was created specifically because of the need to use a variable in one file when it is defined in another file. The data declaration in one file:

??? extern int myVariable;

says to the compiler: "I know this variable is not defined in this file, but you can assume it's an int variable named myVariable and it is defined elsewhere in the program." Think of the compiler generating the code for the variable but instead of suppling the variable's lvalue, it leaves "????" in the generated code where the lvalue should be. Then, in the Arduino environment, in the INO file we find the definition of myVariable:

??? int myVariable;

which is the program statement that defines the variable myVariable. This definition allocates storage and allows the compiler to fill in the lvalue for this variable in the symbol table. Now, after the compiler finishes, the linker comes along looking at the generated code from the compiler and sees the ???? marker in the object file, looks in the symbol table for ???? in the symbol table, and substitutes that variable's lvalue for the ???? marker. When it's done with that, the linker continues to stitch in the code from the libraries and any other extern declarations to generate the final program code.

Using the terms define and declare as if they are the same concepts is wrong, but most programmers fail to make the distinction. Indeed, even Microsoft's documentation treats the two terms the same. Programming is confusing enough without confusing the terms that are integral to it.

I OTOH like the idea of a matching header file for each .cpp file.?
Having
everything in SDT.h seems.... like clutter.? Lots of scanning up & down
in
that huge file.? How to find the prototypes to call stuff in CAT.cpp??
Easy,
they're in CAT.h.? No scanning up & down.

Aesthetically, that giant SDT.h file gives me a similar feeling to
seeing
a few zillion global variables.

You and Al architected the T41 as a collection of small modules with
well
defined functions and interfaces that can be dropped in & out.? I feel
that
the software should be the same way.? A .cpp file/.h file pair with well
defined
interfaces that can be dropped in & out.? So - for example - if I want a
CW
keyer in another project, I can grab cw_keyer.cpp and cw_keyer.h, and I
pretty
much have it.? Yeah, I'll have to tweak them for another architecture,
but I won't have to go scanning through some giant file to find the bits
that correspond.

I do agree on the concept of not having anything whatsoever executable
inside an include file.? Or rather - not having anything that assigns
storage.
A class definition doesn't assign storage.? But it still looks messy.

? I did use the USB output on another project.? It worked fine.? It
should
work here too.? Time to get to work.

Re: Software for Chapter 9 AT with Graphical SWR Analyzer

I don't seem to have the matching version. However, there is a file on the SCHR web site in the Files section that was posted on 7/15/21 that might be what you're looking for.

Hi Jack

I am not sure its the correct file as it seems to relate to your earlier Antenna Analyzer project and not your more recent MicroController Projects Chapter 9 "100 Watt Antenna Tuner"
?
The file AT.h appears to be different to the .h file as described on Page 9-23 of the book as there is no declaration of struct grafix.
?
The Menu options shown on page 9.22 of the book are
"Full",Band, Freq, Oper, Cal
i.e 5 menu options
but
in the .ino file there is the line
const char *menuOptions[] ? ? ? = {" Full ?", " ?Bands ?", " ?Freq ?", " ?Cal "};
?
i.e. Only 4 Menu Options - No Oper menu option.
?
Is it possible there has been a "mix up" with files for the Antenna Analyzer project and the files for the more recent 100 Watt Antenna Tuner?

Re: Success

Hey Dr. Bill
5V Display
It was very flakey until I installed the Ferrites.
Now it is bullet proof, can not make it hang up or freeze.
V12
50.2 FW?
Audio is back working FB.
Other versions of code had no real audio just pulsing with or without ferrites.
