Gen 3 handpad buttons sticking

Hello Gary,
I was using my scope last night (Gen 2 with gen 3 handpad and latest firmware). When I was pressing the right button (I think CW) it got stuck and I had a runaway scope. I tried pressing it several times but button won't come unstuck. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this and prevent it from happening again? The handpad is always stored inside my home and only brought out when I use the scope.

Mike

Mike,

Seems very odd and I'd almost say a coincidence, not related to the HC. There's little there that can cause that unless somehow the button got physically stuck down. I try to ensure that the buttons are reasonably centered when I assemble them here... not an overly easy task to do on all four of them but I won't let it go out if it I don't see a 'dark ring' around the outer rim of the yellow button cap as I look down in to it. So its unlikely it got stuck.?

What I'd suggest is IF this happens again and you still think it was caused by a button push ... if it is the AZ axis don't panic too much (unless for some reason you are using it without the ability to swing 360°)... and you can do this - unplug the cable to the HC! Does it 'stop'??

If it is the ALT you could reach for the ALT release lever and release it - don't panic again and throw the release lever more than the recommended position for manual operation (i.e. don't throw the lever fully 180° which should only be used if the cable needs to be removed) ... and then unplug the cable. Does it stop?

Additionally what you can do is - assuming it IS stuck and is the problem- push 2 other yellow buttons - this should, if the problem was the HC, stop the scope as it is the "B-Stop" command. Two red LED's on the HC will flash and the green slew and GOTO lights will go out. Unstick the button and plug the cable back in. Push a yellow button twice to get the 'enable' back up.?

My suspicion is there is another issue going on and what can cause that generally is the connection from the motor encoder to the back of the ServoCAT. This is not - I repeat not the larger network cable which is in this use the motor power cable since the motor IS running... it is the smaller of the two. Don't mess with it except after talking to me about testing for it. And by all means avoid the usual "I unplugged every cable and re-seated them".. this is the last thing - actually this is one thing I'd NEVER recommend but seems to be a common first thing people try. Doing this might cause more problems. Cables are extremely reliable - I mean a 10th of a percent failure rate if not lower ... any issues are almost always something else - I'm here - contact me and we'll go from there.

Hi Mike,
I've had my buttons sticking and runaway one after the other, like yours, in 2010. Not sure which version it was, it's a wireless handpad.
I did find a similar button and changed all 4, I thought I had no other choice.
I did think those original buttons were faulty somehow.
I found those documents from back then. I probably bought those Omron B3W switches (I know I need surface mounts but I couldn't find any and it wasn't a big deal to bend those legs flat).

Thanks Claude. Yes I’ve had my servocat for 14 years now and after my original Gen 2 buttons began sticking I upgraded to Gen 3 handpad when it was available. Now they are sticking. It’s not the motor or encoder or Argo or cables…it is the button physically sticking.

My Gen 2 ServoCAT with the then “new” wireless transmitter/receiver and wireless Hand Controller dates from 2009. ?

About 4-5 years use the wireless HC “CW” button began to stick. ?I sent it along with the wireless receiver back to GM and had the receiver firmware updated, purchased a new spare transmitter/receiver and new spare wireless HC. ?GM also repaired the malfunctioning “CW” button on the original wireless HC.

I’ve used the “new” wireless HC since then and exactly 5 days ago ( Sunday ) while observing in Calhoun County Park, Grantsville, WV, in 18 Deg F temps the CW button on the “newer” HC stuck and I had a slow “runaway” situation in AZ ( not the true fast, alternating back and forth runaway Servo motor response which I have also experienced the same year I received my ‘scope in 2009 - related to servo motor malfunction ) as though someone was ?pressing the “CW” button and wouldn’t let up on it.

I killed that with the three button “smash”, shut down and then examined my wireless HC. ?The “CW” button was frozen in the down position, no “clicking” sound when pressed, but if I firmly hit the back of the HC ( like burping a baby ) the “CW” button popped up, it clicked when depressed but remained stuck in the active down position.

I carry the repaired original HC with me so I simply switched wireless HC units and all was well and partied on observing in the bitter cold.

The next day, when warmed to ambient room temps, ?the malfunctioning wireless HC “CW” functioned as it should, becoming “unstuck”.

I may ask if GM can replace all the yellow buttons on this HC and I’ll have a new “old” spare for another decade ( I hope ).

Hi Mike, did we misunderstand ? I've had my buttons physically sticking too.

I have fixed all the sticking buttons on all the different hand controls over the years with fine mist silicone, they never stuck again.

Cale

What type or brand of fine silicone?mist do you use.? Do you simply spray lightly on the buttons and let it kind of penetrate?
Thanks
Cale
