Rudder Klunk

dickvanhooser #531 We've finally gotten our boat ready and sailed it a few times in Galveston bay. It sails great, tosses us around a bit in choppy water, and goes fast. The problem we face right now is the rudder klunking in its mount. Has anyone found a way to eliminate that slack in the mount? I got new bushings, little plastic ones that I had to trim down to install, but I couldn't get the bottom one in place because the pivot pin was a tad too short to insert the bushing and still get the cotter pin in place. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Dick

I can't help you with the cotter pin question, since I have never have done the job...sorry. john All Messages By This Member #533 Hi, I just bought hull #50 and I am working with Stef who has a 7.9 and makes bushings. He is mailing some to me tomorrow and I will let you know if it works. There is a lot of play in my rudder. Not between the clevis pin and the rudder that still has the bushing in place but between the clevis pin and the gudgeons on the transom. Joe Snyder All Messages By This Member #616 Hi, I am very close to buying a S2 27. ?On the test sail I also found the rudder klunk issue. ?I have read through the various posts in the group, but I could not find any information on size of bearings/bushings needed. ?I believe one post mentioned Thompson bearings and I think it showed the inside diameter to be 5/8", but I could not find what the outside diameter needs to be, Thompson had a few different OD sizes to choose from. ?I also could not find the length of bearing/bushing needed and didn't think to measure for them on the test sail. Does anyone know the ID/OD's of these items and the length needed? ?Please post them if you do. Thanks! Joe
FWPHOTO All Messages By This Member #618 Hi Joe, I've replaced the rudder bushings a couple of times on my boat and gotten them from S2. There are gudgeon bushings that look like white tubes that the pintles drop in to & they are some sort of plastic or composite like derlin. There are also small, plastic, clip type bushings that go inside the receiving holes keeping metal-to-metal contact from happening between pintle & gudgeon. I'm not at my boat right now so I can't do much better describing this. Maybe someone else can. The last time I bought them I bought a few sets directly from S2. I'm down to my last, unused set of spares. Back then I called their parts dept. @ 616-394-7492 & talked with their "sailboat guy," Scott Bytwerk. This was in the '90s, though, so I don't know if the info or personnel is current. The gudgeon bushings were labelled "8.1 Gudgeon Bushings" and the others simply "Small, Clip Type Bushings (27)." I bought 2 sets that time and it cost me a little over $100. I think I had to cut the last set of gudgeon bushings to size.
