S/V Carina?

1986 S2-27

Hull # something over 80 (We bought her new, can’t remember actual hull #)

Taking this year off. My wife & I are celebrating 30 year anniversary (got married on Carina in ‘86) by going transatlantic on the Queen Mary II from England to NYC.

Take care,

Frank

How many S2 27 owners are out there?

I purchased My S2 27 (hull 40) last year. She is named "Lunacy" she is my 5 boat in 30 plus years of sailing. While there were only 85 of these boats produced, I was curious about the Hull number and name of yours? I own Hull 40 with Edson steering, Traveller (Gauhuer) and a Harken Mark IV Roller Furling with a new suit of sails topped off with a Raymarine EV-1 wheel pilot. Lunacy may be the best single handling boat I ever sailed the balance is awesome. Yes the modifications are extreme but this boat jewelry is just for fun. I live in Arkansas and Sail on Greers Ferry Lake.?

Very cool video! Where are you sailing?

Also, looks like you have a beefed up traveller. That’s something I might want to do on mine. Is it something you did?

Thanks!

It wasn't my drone and the owner said he had gotten his moneys worth out of it if it hit the water.?

BTW, this is just over the Plateau from you in Knoxville.

Re: Loving the new S2

Very nice video. Thanks for uploading.

I love my 27 as well. It sails like a proper sailboat: balanced helm, points high (long keel) and goes fast. Also handles well here on the Great Lakes with large swells and high winds. Easily surfs down waves to 12+ mph. What a kick!

Surprisingly roomy and comfortable for a 27 footer both above and below deck.

Check the top battens on your mainsail, looks like they are fouling on the boom lift wire.

Re: Front hatch

try typing in marine hatch repair in your browser
there are U-Tube videos if you want to do it yourself?
and there are companies that specialize in the repair if you want to send it off

Re: Front hatch

Mine is significantly crazed too. ?I don't think the structural integrity of the plastic is very compromised though. ?I've stood on mine and it seems sound. ?Cosmetically it's not great, but I worry about creating a greater problem messing with it.

Mine is extremely crazed, as well. I try not to stand on it but I don’t think its compromised too much as far as safety is concerned. Especially sailing on Lake Erie.

I’d be interested in what others have done, though.

Unstepping the mast

Hi all,

Sadly, it is time to pull the boat for the season. ?This is my 1st year with the boat, so 1st time taking the mast down. ?It looks pretty straight forward, get the mast centered under the hoist, secure the hoist sling to the mast under the spreader, undo the stays, and up through the hull she comes. ?I have no idea what type of plugs are inside the base of the mast for the mast lights/VHF antenna, but I assume no surprises there either.

Do any of you have advice or tricks to make this process go smoother? ?Anything specific to avoid doing that might cause damage/problems?

Thanks in advance.

Joe

Re: Prop shaft stuffing box maintenance

This message is for Steve O, but others can weigh in if you like. ?I saw your post that the previous owner of your boat sawed out the wood between the engine and water tank. ?I am thinking about doing the same to get better access to the engine. ?Do you have any pictures of how this looks?

I am trying to decide how much to cut away yet still leave enough in tact to keep the water tank anchored to the board that separates the water tank and engine. ?I really don't want to relocate the water tank.

Have you had any issues with heat in the cockpit locker due to the missing piece of wood? ?Any effects on your water tank? (assuming yours is still mounted there too). ?The back side of the board that separates the water tank and the engine has insulation attached to the engine side, this is why I am concerned this might be an issue.

Any pictures or advice any of you have is greatly appreciated!

Joe
