Source for rudder bearings?

Before I launch this spring, I would like to replace the bearings (bushings) on my 27's rudder.? The rudder slop when sailing downwind is pretty noticeable.
Do any of you have a source for the bearings?? I assume that they will simply press in.

Thanks.

Re: Canvas Winter Cover?

While I have been leaving the mast up when I haul the boat in the Fall, I generally take the boom off. I tie off the tarp to the mast & run it back just past the companionway a little way into the cockpit. I can tie off the sides to the slotted toe rail. I have some bumpers I lay on the cabin-top to keep the tarp off winches & other deck fittings that would rub through it very quickly. So far, I can get a few years from each tarp so that keeps the cost pretty low.

That said, if I could get a full cover made at a reasonable price (not sure exactly what that might be, though) I would definitely consider investing in one.?

So, what do you do to cover your boat while its on the “hard?”

Frank

I looked into a winter cover for my S2 27 & found it to be pretty expensive. If there were a fairly inexpensive option I would certainly consider it. Would love to hear what others have paid for one.

I used a waterproof electrical tape. It was a pain to get a good wrap around the hose & I think I had to do it twice. I also had to be a bit more vigilant getting the water out from under the engine after motoring. Seemed to hold pretty well just sitting at the dock, though.

When my shaft log hose started to leak it was close to the end of sailing season last year. I checked with the marina that hauls my boat & they said it was no problem. Most of the cost would have been in the haul-out. The guy that would have done the work was there & he was a small, skinny guy. I was able to wrap the hose well enough to get through the year & fix it before I launched this year. That said, if I were in your place I’d look for someone to do the work for you.

This last Spring, though, I had to replace the shaft log hose & it is probably a job requiring similar access. This is also how I adjust the stuffing box & put fluid into the tranny.?

I did clean out the lazarettes to gain better access from the rear, but ended up going over the engine for almost all the work. If I were to pull the tranny I would probably have to go through the lazarettes to get to some of the bolts, though.

I almost had the yard replace the shaft log hose because of the limited access. I knew I could do the job, just didn’t think I would fit the way I once did. Even then it was a squeeze. That was 15 lbs. ago.

Keelbolt washers

My 1987 S2 27 has mild steel washers on the keel bolts, which are pretty much totally rusted away.??

Anyone on this list replaced them??

If so, with stainless, or again with mild steel??

How big a job was it?

Cheers!

Re: S2 27 Members

Jumping in... I'm not sure what the shape, but maybe this page from the manual could help get to the correct length??

I think mine may be original - I don't think any of the POs did anything "extra" to her. The tiller is pretty straight. Maybe a SLIGHT bend downward actually, but nothing drastic. I found that when full to port or starboard the tip would hit the gunwales, so just put some bumpers under the tiller hinge where it hits the rudder. Props it up just enough. Re: Bushings for rudder pintles

That is great news, Brian ... and advice. Mine is also getting "wobbly". What was the best way to get the rudder off the back? She sure seems to be kinda heavy. I was thinking a floor jack and some wood blocks could make it easy to control let down nicely. How'd you do yours?

Thanks,
Matt - '85 #11.

Re: S2 27 Members

I agree, Mark.? Too bad, though, that the listserv has been so quiet recently.
?
Here's a conversation starter.
What are the dimensions of the OEM tiller for the S2 27?? Is it dead straight, or does it have an upward curve? My tiller was hand-built by the previous owner, so I have no idea about the dimensions of the original.??

It's about time for a haul out for bottom paint and I have always wondered about my prop.? It's a 1GM10 and the prop is a 2 blade Michigan "Sailer" 14 x 10.? There is only about a 1/4 inch space between the prop and the hull?? With a clean bottom and empty boat it will run about 6 - 6.5 knots at 3000 RPM.? I wonder what others have with their Yanmar's, Brian you don't count:)
