Ra 17 enclosed trimming tool

Hi Guys My Ra17L and my Ra117 came without the original tools (3 all¨¦n keys and a trimming tool. Thhus I like to get some info abt the trimming tool . Does anyone have the dimensions for this tool and if possible a picture ? Any info much appreciated. 73 de Jan /SM5MRQ

AGC variants

Morning all, All my previous RA17s, Ls and 117s have had a usable manual if/rf gain when the agc is on but the latest one doesn't, which makes the set less pleasant to use for casual band surfing. None of the circuit drawings I've found so far show any S5E connection to the if/rf pot in any position other than MAN. Would the solution be a simple link on S5E? Some kind soul with the answer might save me digging out another radio to look for myself, and if I do, I may well miss something! 73 Colin.

Greetings, fellow sufferers! I have just been given an ex GPO interference service 17l, which will be overhauled to render it viable long after I'm not. It will never be quite a pristine example because I think the PO and DTI inventory labels are worth preserving. Unfortunately the fiduciary adjustment has been broken off, taking a big lump of bezel with it. Would any kind soul have a spare, intact bezel I could have for reasonable compensation? Not too worried about the locating pegs that usually snap off, or the windows that fall off of their own accord. 73 Colin mm1aps

Adjustable ferroxcube inductors

I acquired a RA63 unit some time ago and recently had a custom built box made to house it and make it into a nice integrated set up with a similarly box enclosed RA17L. Although it works well I decided to run through the internal settings to make sure everything was optimally set up (as is my usual modus operandi) Unfortunately I hit a snag with the ferroxcube adjustable inductor (marked L14 on the circuit diagram) which controls the 18Kcs oscillator frequency. A previous 'visitor' has rounded off the slug to make adjustment impossible. The frequency is not seriously out, being 80Hz high, but it would be nice to get it right. The question is whether it is possible to dismantle one of these units and replace/repair the slug. I've not come across one of these before and don't want to delve in blind and make things much worse. Obviously the other possibility is that one of the group has a replacement or knows a potential source of one - the part number as per the manual is BA10724. Thanks in anticipation, Phil MW0KGP

Never worked too well on my set. Changed the caps and one or two resistors and setting it up tomorrow. How does the bfo calibrate work? Doesn't look too obvious from the circuit. I must be missing something. Don m5aky

Help - RA1772 Fault

Hi Gents, my RA1772 suddenly stopped working - with a slight crack sound. Meter shows all power to voltages to be very low i.e. +20v is at 6v. On inspection link LK2 (+12v) on the power card has blown. Following the fault finding flows in the service manual would indicate that excessive current is being taken on the +20v supply but I can see how this is related to LK2 blowing. Any suggestions as to where to look next would be most welcome. Thanks Peter M0GUO

Dear RA17 experts, Has anyone used a NanoVNA to setup an RA17 37.5 and 40 Mcs filters, yet. I wondered if there is any specific interfacing to be aware of like impedance mismatching for example and how to address this. Thoughts and experiences appreciated on using a NanoVNA on the RA17 for alignment. 73 Martin M0MGA

Resistor power dissipation

The first IF amp in an RA17II has a resistor chain comprising R90//R91, R93//R94 and R97. R90 and R91 are 4k7 1/2W, R93 and R94 were originally 47k 1/2W and R97 is 15k 1/2W. Assuming that the voltage at the top of the chain is 240V DC, the resistor chain current is 5.87mA and R97 dissipates 0.52W so very close to the 1/2W rating. However, to address concerns about variations in performance of V14 being overloaded in the crystal filter positions, Mod 4 calls for R93 and R94 to be replaced by 27k// 33k (so 14k9). This increases the chain current to 7.45mA and R97 now dissipates 0.83W, well above its 0.5W rating. So, if like me you find yourself rebuilding an IF strip, the 15k resistor R97 ought to be replaced with something beefy - like a 2W metal or carbon film resistor (so it runs cool). Craig

The easiest way to distribute it is to put it in the files section, but i have read somewhere that the space is limited. Who is allowed to allow ( or deny ) me placing the PDF there; filesize is about 33 MB.... and how do i do that.... Love to hear from you ( the right person ).... Kees

RA117 transformer replacement

Hello to the Group, I've found a RA117 (rear label states RA117E) without mains transformer. Now I've one T1078 (the one used on RA17L) as a spare, but I'm unsure if I can use it to feed this receiver. If yes, I've here the following secondary outputs: two 250V and one center 0V - 180mA. So, am I wrong if I connect a secondary 250V output to R136 and the 0V output to the fuse F2 (leaving the other 250V secondary output unconnected)? Any help, advice, warning greatly appreciated! Kc/s tuning backlash

The Kc/s tuning on my RA117E increasingly exhibits backlash over the last 1/3 of the low end of the scale, with no backlash is apparent at the higher end. The backlash is visible at the split and the worm gear. Does anyone have experience of curing this? I assume that retensioning the split gear should sort it but assumptions with the RA17 series can be dangerous - possibly the film strip tension is somehow interacting. Meanwhile, 0dBm from a signal generator at 1.5Mz registers ~S5 but drops off below zero as 30MHz approaches. With some audible signal to improve I will probably work my way back from the front end. Greetings to all Last having owned a RA17 in the 1970s, I have acquired a clean looking RA117E to refurbish. I would like to accompany this eventually with an LF converter, ideally the RA237, but if I used an RA137 the only difference appears to be the 2Mhz crystal notch somewhere around the cathode follower. I cannot locate a circuit diagram to check the actual configuration but it does not seem too problematic to add a 2MHz xtal notch to an RA137. Does anybody have a circuit diagram of the RA237? Or can anybody tell me how much the use of an unmodified RA137 would compromise performance? Best regards, Pete Connors G4PLZ

Hello group I chanced upon some RA17 ancillary items on the above several MA 168 diversity switch¡¯s ,DK43 and a very unusual FL-4-C variable bandwidth AF filter. Does anyone on the group use any of these with their kit ? Best regards Hugh

BE AWARE when buying these R&S muliticouplers NV 4 WITHOUT the tubes.. Each connection for a receiver ( you can connect 6, all have 75 ohms lay out ) do need 2 Telefunken tubes E88cc and they must absolute be ¡® matched pair ¡® A total of 12 x E88cc is needed , 6 pairs also that you must ¡® organize ¡® I did a look up on Ebay and saw the asking price ..
