FIRST, below is a an excerpt from a message that Mark Sperber sent out on the Blueridgerunners list about tires. PLEASE NOTE: As you read the following snipped message it says that race tires do NOT require special time to warm up on the street to be effective!!!!! I have ALWAYS heard (many times!!) that race tires require special time on the race track to warm up before they will operate effectively and they cannot get properly warmed up in the street environment. For me this just shows that you can hear ANY argument about anything you want. Pro or con. Eggs are good for you, they are bad, chocolate is bad for you it is good for you, race tires are REQUIRED to be heated up to work properly or they will dump you, race tires are good for the street and do not require to be good and warmed up. All I want is truth in advertising!!! -----Original Message-----
From: Mark J. Sperber To: Blueridgerunners Sent: 10/21/00 9:26 AM Subject: [blueridgerunners] FW: [Deal's_Gap] Tires I was reading this again this morning and thought it might be of interest to some... mjs REAL difference between Race vs Street tires!!! Here is some text from Steve Brubaker on this very subject. Steve is well known in the racing world, and you've likely seen him in the background shots in the winner circle. Steve is President of Race Tire Service and is Dunlop's representative on the East coast. ------------------------------------------------------------- First thing I must mention that I work exclusively with Dunlop product and can only speak about product that I have first hand knowledge and experience with. SNIP SAFETY. There is not a safety issue in running DOT racing tires on the street. SNIP TEMPERATURES: What does tire temperature have to do with performance? Lets first understand an old falsehood "Race tires won't stick till you warm them up" this is untrue and is a falsehood. Here are the facts. If you took a race tire and a street tire and ran them side by side, the race tire would provide more grip than the street tire in every temperature range. So if both tires are at 60F the race tire works better. If both at 160F, the race tire still works better. Now will a cold race tire work as well as a hot street tire? I don't know, it would depend upon the tires. (But I am sure that someone did this and fell down, then started the rumor.) The big difference comes in the cold verses hot performance. A race tire get much better when hot. A street tire gets a little bit better when hot. Ride and have fun. Steve Brubaker, President, Race Tire Service Inc. SECOND: You should go and check your tire pressures, on all vehicles. This is the time of year when I see the most loss of tire pressure in my tires, and most of it is due to the general decrease in the ambient temperature (Hey it's FALL!!!) . As the temperature goes down, the pressure goes down in tires. I think tire pressures go down about 1 PSI for every 10 degree drop in trmperature. Don't forget to check your tires when cold too. THIRD: I thought I was protected (Hey!!! It's not what you are thinking!!!) I received a virus infected email from a friend in Australia the other day. Things looked a little weird in a few emails I received and so I just deleted them (Subject: Virus, etc., or no subject. Weird stuff.) Wrong on my part!!! Then I sent an email to a friend, Earle Bare, closed down my computer and climbed in my car to go run an errand. WELL, Earle hurriedly called me on my cell phone and told me I had tried to infect him!! (Hey Earle we hardly know each other!!!) But the bottom line is you just won't know when it happems to you!! And that is the whole objecive of these sneaky things!! It's a long story, but I went right over to see Earle and Kind Prince that he is "we" (really all Earle) took the next *6 hours* and fixed my computer (there were a few other problems too.) THANKS EARLE BARE BIG TIME!!!!! So I thought I was protected and was not. ARE YOU? The fix was for me was to download a "guard" that is now always on alert in my computer to find viruses, clean them if possible, and then put them into a safe quarintined site in my computer where they cannot hurt anything. I have to do nothing at all for it to work. The neat part is that via email this antivirus program is always being updated to new viruses as they are invented. Remember there are people out there who are challenged by thinking up ways to mess up as many computers in the world as possible, just for the joy of it!!! Just like the weirdos who burn down houses for the thrill of it. The threat of viruses is constant and they are always changing and getting updated by new ones. So the antivirus program that works this week may not work next week!!! It pays to be updated. I strongly suggest you download such an antivirus program and let it protect you, if you don't have one. Note below that the one I got prevents you from accessing antivirus websites so once infected you cannot even get help!!!The one I got works like this: From: www.antivirus.com RE: TROJ_MTX.A "When an infected user sends an email to an address, the Trojan sends another email to the same address with itself as an attachemnt. ...The Trojan also installs a backdoor application in the system and prevents the infected user from accessing any antivirus vendor websites or sending emails to specific email servers." This is just my experience, there may be a better way to protect yourself, and I am surely not a computer expert (Right Earle?). But I do know that this virus made me dead in the water in a heartbeat and it planted itself in 75 or more locations in my computer before it was finished. And if I had continued sending emails I would have infected everyone that I emailed to!!! (If Brian is reading this his heartbeat just went up for sure! It's OK Brian this is an "after the fact" story.) Earle and I had an awful time correcting this problem, (at least that problem, my other problems would not be so easily exorcised!!! Mental help is yet to be invented to help me out!! But that's another story.) At the above website you can download a 30 day trial for free and see if you like it. It took about 45 minutes to load. I am sure there are other sites too. It's worth thinking about. And next Saturday we get to stay up another hour because we get a "free hour of time" next Sunday morning. Where did this this free hour come from anyway, and who gave it to us? Do I have to give it back? Best, Mac Kirkpatrick Glenmoore, PA USA |
