Locked Locked in 2nd gear
Dear Group,
Out for a ride this afternoon, when going from second gear to third gear, the trans would not up shift to third nor down shift to first. There was no unusual noise or grinding. The shift lever moves up and down with a bit of a springy motion, but it¡¯s locked in 2nd. The bike can roll only by pulling the clutch lever. If someone can shoot me a diagnosis I would be appreciative. Thanks Gayle Murphy In beautiful Milwaukee, Wisconsin By the Big Pond |
Pawl spring has broken. If the transmission is original, and has some goodly mileage on it, it is time for an overhaul...by a transmission specialist. DIY work isn't recommended by me for the transmission because of the large number of changes over the years.

If stranded, there is an emergency shift tool one could use, but it generally requires some knowledge and practice in using the tool. You could also get a couple of buddies to help you turn the bike upside-down, and you MAY be able to shift it....yes, that rumor is true. There is a whole bunch of stuff about the transmission, including a longish section on the pawl spring late in the article, and a link to the emergency tool, in here: Snowbum -----Original Message-----

Thanks Robert. Appreciate your help. FYI. My bike is a 1975 SS R90S. All original with 61,000 miles. No trans issues ever. GL5 oil always. Oil always clean. No visible particles on magnetic plug. Do you recommend an overhaul?

Or just replace the pawl spring? Probably hard to say without looking inside. Thanks G.Murphy On Oct 4, 2022, at 6:15 PM, Robert Fleischer dba Fleischer's Service via groups.io <snowbum@...> wrote: |
A look-see is required. The spring replacement is likely not going to be just a spring replacement.....the main reason the early spring broke was the size of the boss it rides on, imo. Boss can be reduced...but, there are other things to know about the shifting parts, etc. Most, if not all (?) are in my transmission article. I suggest the transmission be torn down by someone who really knows what they are doing...having done hundreds. They are on the Airheads List, not sure about the R90S List. Read the article from beginning to end, even if you do not understand it all.

Gayle - the problem is one of the springs in the transmission gear selector broke. I¡¯ve heard of guys bending a metal rod in such a way that by inserting it through the oil filler and twisting just right, the shift pawl could be made to work - just for that moment. Another gear could be selected and you¡¯d be stuck in that one - say, 4th.

The real fix is remove the transmission, open it up and replace the spring. Terry On Oct 4, 2022, at 3:31 PM, Gayle Murphy <gmurphy@...> wrote: |

hi gayle, keith in oakland, ca here. same thing happened to me 10 years ago and this summer. 1st time was the infamous shifter spring breaking. this time i assumed the worst and borrowed a transmission form an Airhead friend as i was due to ride to detroit and back. it all went fine, now(soon) i have to open the trans and check it out. i can't recommend trans rebuilding unless you have some of the required special tools. also the shims between the rear case and the back of the bearings are critical. be sure you keep them separate and labeled and you got them all. kk On Tuesday, October 4, 2022, 03:31:43 PM PDT, Gayle Murphy <gmurphy@...> wrote: Dear Group, Out for a ride this afternoon, when going from second gear to third gear, the trans would not up shift to third nor down shift to first.? You're very welcome, Gayle!?
You know, that's one of the few failures unfixable beside the road. We all dread it.
?
So tell us what happened? How far from home? What was it like getting there in second??
