Locked Guggenheim exhibit/R90s, Ducati 750 SS

Mac Kirkpatrick

Mac,
If you have got it, take a look at page 336 and 337 from the Guggenheim
Museum "The Art of the Motorcycle". A European version Daytona Orange
wearing rubber stockings. There are other examples too... maybe Anthony
knows more?
Kirk

Kirk: I have that book, it is in front me now open to page 336/337.

The R90s pictured is owned by Dave Percival of Maine, here in the US. He now
owns 17 R90ss, and about 95 BMWs in total.
He loaned his restored R32 for the exhibit also, see page 150. Way
beautiful, but I understand it is built up from parts.
Dave has a fabulous collection of BMWs. He and I speak every once in a
while, the last time about 3 weeks ago. He is a very nice guy.

I was privileged to be able to attend the press opening of the Guggenheim
Museum in New York City and I looked at this R90s in detail. It is not a
very good example of an R90s although the picture is a good one. In my
experience pictures turn out better than what is actually being
photographed.
The R90s in the picture has an aftermarket fork brace. The plate you see
just below the seat vinyl said something about a prior owner. It was just
glued in place. This R90s is a US model according to the owner, so the fork
boots are aftermarket.
This bike is a nice R90s but it was not really great at all. Many of the
people who attended the Guggenheim exhibit mentioned that it was a shame
that the R90s example was not that great and said it was a shame to not have
had a better example to display.

Kirk's R90s in the picture looked much better. The Guggenheim R90s was a
little worn.

BTW the Ducati 750SS on page 327 is owned by Larry Forstall who lives about
10 miles from me. I met him one day when I was visiting a car parts store to
buy an H4 bulb in 100 watt for my K100RS (now sold.) He said that is not a
legal bulb (55 watt is the maximum allowed), and what did I want it for? I
told him it was for my K100RS driving lights and he said he owned a BMW ('84
R100RS "Last Edition"). It turned out had set several land speed records at
Bonneville. He had VERY thick glassed and I would have never guessed he
would be into land speed records!!!
He just set another land speed record recently at Bonneville on a Hyabusa
(sp?), don't recall the speed though. It was high though!

To make a short story long, THIS 750 SS Ducati has ZERO original miles on
it!!!! Larry owns about four 750 SS Ducatis in total!!!

Mac,
You are the master... I bow to you. And I have at least 1 more picture (of a different bike) with the fork boots on. Before I embarass myself again, I gonna do some more research about its date!
But we got you on the replector thing oh great one. In '74 I only had relectors on my Schwinn.

Kirk: PLEASE DON'T say stuff like the above. It is definitely not true and
it is also very embarrassing.

I just want to learn and all of us together can help each other out by
sharing, learning from each other and having fun.
Ain't it great?
-----------------------------------------

BTW we have about 42 members on this R90s discussion list now. I am amazed
at how fast it has grown.

Everyone's helpful discussions and hints are a great help to all of us and
are greatly appreciated. Thanks to everyone for their contributions.

I think it was Kirk who posted the location of the R90s Tamiyl 1/6 TT Silver
Smoke plastic models in Japan (I was trying to keep this site a secret!!!),
the cleaning aluminum hints were great, etc. Thanks.

I am below going to bring up a question about BMW tank and tail section
emblems but first I want to pass on something that I have learned that
others may find interesting. (This via Kent Holt of Holt Painting and Holt
BMW/Ducati fame in OH.)

You know the BMW emblems that are on the K12RS and the Cruiser, the sort of
raised three dimensional emblems?
Well I am told that these same emblems will fit on the older R and K bikes
as well, and if you compare how these new style emblems look on the bike
they look GREAT. Much better than the old original style, in my opinion
anyway.
Replacing the older emblems cost about $6.00 each and the three dimensional
ones cost about $18.00 each here in the US but the new style ones do not
fade over time and they look much better. Not original (horrors!!!) but they
do look super.

Okay I have another question:

Many folks here in the US maintain that the R90s model was the last model to
have the cloisonne (enamel) tank and tail section emblems.
I do not agree with this, as I own a '74 R90s which I bought from the
original owner and it has the thin non enamel emblems.
I have spoken to others about this and there are other owners whose R90ss
have the non enamel emblems.

SO, Oh list members what is your experience with the emblems?
Enamel or the thin ones?

Mac,

If you buy the ones for the Cruiser, they won't have the metal guide pins on
the underside and are somewhat cheaper.

Also, while there may have been some non enamel emblems on some of the '74
R90S', it remains that there were some that had enamel and were the last
bikes to have enamel emblems in my recollection.
