The major thing to know is that the tightening nut works on both the tank threads and the petcock threads, so one must start the process such that you end up with a fairly even number of threads used on the tank spigot and petcock. If you start close to the point of grabbing threads from both, that usually works out OK.
If the threads are encrusted, clean them carefully. I advise you NOT try to clean up the bottom end of the spigot...unless very little, and very carefully...it must be left square to the petcock mating surface!!! I usually just wipe the area with a good solvent....but, I've seen some problem tank spigots.
I generally don't use plumber's tape (that super thin Teflon stuff), nor, any other sealant.

Are there any quirks in regard to removing and reinstalling a fuel petcock on a ’75 S that I should know about? Should threads be addressed? i.e. plumbers tape, etc.
