Locked Re: Whiny tach on 1976 R90/6

Thanks all for the feedback regarding the Whiny tach. ?The other day I removed the assembly and took it apart as far as I could without actually removing the hypoid gear on the shaft. ?I was able to drip some 3-1 oil at the base of the shaft and then spin the tach with my drill in reverse with a squarehead bit. ?I did this numerous times and it seems like the oil made it into the shaft and the noise went away.

I also greased the gears with a small dab of lithium grease and then a little graphite spray down the tach cable since I had it off.

I also pulled the speedo assembly since I had it all apart and did the same. ?It did seem a little dry.

I drove it for a while and the tach seems to be smooth and no noise which is good news.

Hopefully that will take care of the problem. ?I don’t think I want to attempt to remove the shaft of the tach by trying to remove the tiny circlip on that gear! ?Getting it off would be one thing. ?Getting it back on would be another!

Shop manuals are available online. Worth pursuing. The three bolts just need to be loosened and pull up the cluster. The electrical connection is a larger than you'd expect plug secured by a tiny little screw that is easily lost. It's also not real easy to get this plug in or out.

My tach is also clattering. Attempted cable lube unsuccessful at resolving. Outer cable covering is also dinged and the timing cover grommet is toast so I'll replace these and proceed with removing the cluster to get it serviced.?
I see the heads of 3 bolts below the cluster. I assume I disconnect the speedo and tach cables, remove the 3 bolts and go from there. There must be an electrical/warning light disconnect somewhere in the mix. Hopefully its a quick disconnect type.
Thanks for the education and resource info!

Locked Cross Brace Required/Pannier frame fitting

My bike did not have a cross brace, an essential part to prevent the bags from "waving" like the wings
of a bird, which will lead to failure of the racks.
I made one, it is U shaped with two holes drilled in the two short "legs" not all that difficult to do, it made the bags not bounce up and down at all.

The panniers move a lot if the crossbrace is not fitted.?
Problem with the brace is they are hard to find unless you can make one.

I’ll send some pictures later this week when I’ve hit the panniers fitted and before I cut the bar!
Thanks?

Hi, I wouldn't cut the indicator bar until I found out what is wrong. The bar is not meant to be cut!
I believe that I have the same frame, and I believe that it was made by Krauser, not BMW. These bags are also Krauser, the small ones.

I agree. I was sorry that I fitted it but did need the extra carrying capacity at the time. I did weld up a support bracket that fitted underneath it but despite this developed two cracks in the cowling. It’s now removed and I have found a larger tank bag which would have been a better solution.?
Cheers?

A pet peeve of mine are the rear racks that also sit on the rear edge of the cosling, or worse yet, have a provision to drill into the cowling for two bolts to fit through. The cowling is not at all sturdy and easily?bent, and holy cow, now there are holes in the cowling.
It's nice in concept but has a terrible ending.

To answer Peter, I’m going to cut the indicator bar as Warren suggested so I’ve already started stripping the lights down. I haven’t got the rear catches fitted yet but when I do I’ll share a picture with the panniers attached.?

Thanks fo all the helpful comments?

A side view of the frames. I confess I made these up myself and didn’t include the curved bar over the rear shock that attaches to the rear footpeg bracket.?

Subject: [R90SWORLDNET] Pannier frame fitting
?
I'm hoping someone can help me, I have purchased some used pannier frames for my r90s. They are black painted not chrome. The problem is that if I fit them flush with the rear fitting that sits on the rear subframe loop, the panniers clash with the indicators. Has any one had this problem? I tried to use a threaded bar to wind out the rear of the frames but this just looks wrong and isn't a good solution to properly secure the frames. Have I got the wrong frames ?perhaps? A solution would be to reduce the length of the indicator bar so that the indicators are closer in to the centre of the bike. Perhaps there are different length indicator bars available?
All ideas welcome,?

Thanks?
