Locked Re: R90s won’t idle after carburetor rebuild

Hi Scott,

When you say that you made a “minor rebuild”, what did that involve? Did you remove or replace the jets for instance. Please elaborate a little.

I take it that the slides were removed, perhaps that throttle stop screws as well for cleaning?

Wild guess without knowing more, check that the throttle stop screws are properly adjusted. Also, invest in a carb synchrometer / balancer to help take out the guesswork. Cheap and available on Amazon or eBay.

The experts will tell you they do it by ear. Well good for them, but too much trial and error for this occasional mechanic.

Best regards, Kirk

Hi Scott,
I’m not sure what a minor rebuild of a Dell’Orto might consist of, but perhaps it falls short of what is actually needed.

Following Kirk’s line of questions, did your R90S idle before the minor rebuild? What prompted you to do the minor rebuild in the first place? Without more information it would be hard to troubleshoot the problem.

I’d suggest that you do a proper full rebuild (and hope that your wire probing didn’t damage anything).

Here’s a link to Snowbum’s Dell’Orto rebuild info that will take you through the job.

As a side note, way back in a previous lifetime, I used to do form of minor carb rebuilds on a ‘52 Chevy pickup I owned. It consisted of starting the engine and holding the throttle open to get the RPMs up pretty high and then spraying some long forgotten brand of aerosol carb cleaner all over the carb and into the venturi. Didn’t really do anything, but it was quick and dirty and gave me a feeling of accomplishment… for ten seconds, but hey, I was 23 years old.

I’ve also used carb spray to soak carb passages. Still no idle. I’ve checked points gap and valve clearance. All seems within spec. I’d appreciate any suggestions on what I’ve missed or anything else I can try.?

By no idle do you mean: a) running too fast, or b) won’t run with throttle off ?

I believe the threaded hole is smaller than original, I ordered new elbows from Motorworks and they were smaller diameter than originals, ended up using original elbows with original tops to add to my new dellorto carbs.

Ok guys, a conundrum:

A friend is telling me the nipples that the choke cable go into at the choke lever for our R90Ss are unique to the R90S and are threaded whereas nipples for other applications are not threaded.?

Max BMW says this is the part number, and:
"Nipple for choke cable, R50/5; R60/5; R60/6; R60/7; R90S."
Part number is 13 23 1 260 368

Note that is says this part number is also for the R90S.

Any advice? And, I need two of them.

My guess is since it looks like the Dell’Orto carb is also threaded on the CARB end of the choke cable, they just used the same nipple on BOTH ends to eliminate confusion. ?Or, maybe they stopped tapping the choke lever for the threaded nipple for some time period to save cost ?and substituted the different nipple and nut instead to retain the adjustment capability.? If it were me, and if the official nipple proved unavailable from ECS or MAX BMW, I’d try substituting the 13 23 1 256 019 nipple with the corresponding M5 nut to achieve the same functionality. ?It wouldn’t be “original”, of course, but I’d think it would function the same.? The unknown is whether the choke cables, which are also different part numbers, would fit the barrel of the nipple.? That’s something I can’t tell from info I have available right off (the RS isn’t close by at the moment or I’d look).? I’d venture they’d work, though.

Last week I discovered a 1974 R90/S will be coming up for auction/sale at Kaplan Cycles at The New England Motorcycle Museum in Rockville CT. This bike isn't completely original but looks like a worthy candidate for anyone interested in an R90/S. The bike has been repainted, has electronic ignition, dual spark plug heads, performance rear shocks, etc.
