Locked Re: 76 Forks - No bump bushes ?

I found mine the same last year in my 75. I was told the old bumpers disintegrate over time and simply disappear. I am unconvinced. I suspect a faulty rebuild. My forks certainly work better now with them in place!??

Locked 76 Forks - No bump bushes ?

In stripping the forks of my new 76 R90S to replace a rod retaining bolt that had snapped when I was doing a spanner check. ?I decided to do a full fork service., I have notice that my set-up has no plastic “bump stop bush” on the top of the damper rod. The spring rests on the top of the valve. There is also no similar plastic bush below the valve to protect again full extension. The only bump stop is the “donut” in the end cap. I have Progressive springs fitted in 2002 with PVC spacers for pre-load. The bike has been well looked after and documented. It seems to have been ok like this for 20 years. ?I have all the original Progressive instructions. I have tried one of the bushes and it is a very tight fit. ?Should I just return it to having no bushes as I found it or get more bushes and shorten the pvc spacer to compensate ? Is it possible to reduce the diameter of the bush slightly without damaging their structure in the oil ? ?Thx for taking the time to read.

A test light or voltmeter at the starter relay output (either of the two terminals marked 87) will be one easy way to check the relay output…must be ~battery voltage when the push button is pressed….every time.? IF OK, then check the solenoid terminals appropriately under the starter cover area.

Thanks for the quick response Robert. I will read through this as well as clean the relay contracts. I am maybe hearing a very faint click when I hit the starter button.

I have a 74 R90/6 in addition to my 75 R90S. The start button is only occasionally engaging the starter, and it is becoming worse. All battery and ground connections are clean, and battery is charged. Panel lights come on bright, and it kicks over with full power when it does connect.

I am looking for some guidance regarding where to look next.

Thanks,

Denny

Both of these batteries are about 3/4 inch narrower than the stock battery; any maybe a little taller; but stock strap can be used. Most importantly, it can be installed/removed from the top if you hold your mouth just right.

It is white.

Anyway, hope this will help someone....

Richard-

terryvrla@...

Antonio-
He repaired several speedos for me, 3-5 years ago, at that time the charges were $95 plus parts.

His charges were reasonable, and he is a gentleman.
Do not, however, be in a rush, he services them in the order he receives them.
Ask how far out his turn-around time is, I'm sure it must vary with the season, and then perhaps double it.
For me, the turn-around time was to be 8-10 weeks, and actually turned out to be 6 months.
Best-

The voltmeter shows a 10v current when ignition on and does not show any movement after that, even at higher revs. I’ve tested the voltmeter circuit with a handheld voltmeter and a newer green face voltmeter (currently installed). Both show a higher resting current (12.6) and climbing current when the revs go up, so I’m assuming that something is amiss with the voltmeter.?

I’d appreciate the groups thoughts

Just a small point...current is Amps, voltage is the reading on the meter

hey richard, thanks for checking this out. i'm embarrassed to admit that the fault was all my own. i transposed the black solenoid and red headlight bucket leads on the relay when switching out the old relay. oh well...

I've used the $17.95 relay from motoelekt.com on several airheads over the years and have never had one fail. They are on their web-site under the "chassis" section. Rick Jones is the owner and a nice guy to deal with, he is my go to guy for most airhead electrical items.
