Locked R90SWORLDENT UPDATE

Mac Kirkpatrick

Guyz: One small change and a recommendation:

It has been strongly recommended to me that the R90s list not allow any
attachments to emails as this is a major way for viruses to get into the
system and then affect others on the list.
SO I have made a change so that all attachments are automatically discarded
and will not be transmitted to the R90s list. This way the list will be
more protected.

ALSO if you go to the R90s egroups page you will see on the left a listing
called "Files". If you click on this you will see the files which have
already been added to the files area, and this is where you can put things
for all to see instead of sending attachments.

So in lieu of attachments to emails that you want to make available for the
R90s list members to see, just send them to the Files area and then send an
email to the list telling them to go there and see what you have posted.

A little more involved but a lot safer for us all.

You might want to go now to this area and see what is posted there. It is
interesting.

Good point Frank. After I purchased my S in 1979, I noticed that one of the
mufflers was starting to rot. I took it to the local dealer with the intent
of buying a new set of pipes. While explaining the problem to the owner, he
introduced me to the local BMW rep who was there having a look see. This guy
came over, looked at one of the pipes and told the owner to GIVE me a new
set of pipes. Try doing that today at your local dealer.

replaced under warranty. No hurt in trying

Does anybody out there in R90s land have a source for "original"
throttle
cables? I've nursed, cleaned and lubed my originals along for the past
20
years and they are finally starting to get past the point of redemption.
By
original, I mean the cables need to work with the factory curved inlets
on
the top of the Dellorto's.

thanks for the help,

G'day Ron,
I wish you guys were leaving in Australia. I replaced mine with a local ones
called appropriately Ecco pipes. They're straight through. A R90s going
through a cutting, the pipes merrily barking - magic, simply magic.

The BMw mufflers have EPA stuff stamped in the front of the muffler just
below the footpeg, as well as the stamping in the very rear of the muffler.
Unlike the original mufflers which had nothing stamped in them.

Duwayne,
In Europe, a set of Chrome ones goes for the equivilent of about 300 USD
tax
incl. Stainless steel will set you back about double that. 38-mm is
correct.

Hi Folks, Yes... it's the wrenching season. And I'm looking for some new (?)
stuff for my cosmetically challenged R90s. If anyone has a fairing and dash
for the clock/voltmeter, new or used, for sale or trade, I'd love to hear
from you. I own a 1975 vintage 's which I got late this summer. The great
thing is that it runs beautifully. But being a tinkerer, I want it to look
good and be safe in that I have gone over systems and understand what's
happening. By the way, it's still warm enough to ride, down here in New
England, on most dry days. Thanks, John

Locked R90S Production Years

Philip Rose

Mac,

Whoa there big fella!! R90S production ended in the summer of 1976!
Then BMW started tooling up for /7 production. There are REAL honest to
goodness 1973 R90S's, but really only in Germany. German law states
that any vehicle must be sold as the year it was actually built in.
That is how 1973 90S's, 1969 /5's, 1976 R100RS's and R100S's exist. In
the US it is perfectly acceptable and legal to sell a vehicle built in
1973 as a 1974 model.

Cheers, Phil Rose

Subject: Model Year of R90ss

Anthony: Each year BMW and other manufacturers start building next
year's
bike about August or September. So the R90s was first built in about
August
of 1973 as 1974 models. They then build the 1974 models until the
following
August (which is 1975), when they start the 1975 model.

They do this also for the 1976 model, building the 1976 model from
say
August 1976 until July of 1977.

So you could have a 1974 model year BMW built in Dec of 1973, and a
1976
model year BMW built in January of 1977, for instance. But the model
years
for the R90s was for 1974, 1975 and 1976. The date they are actually
built
is not the model year of the bike necessarily.

The certificate of origin or CO or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin
(a
"birth certificate" for the bike) states on it the model year for the
bike,
at least for the US. I have a copy of an original CO from 1974 that
each
dealer used to make a title for the bike. And of course the build
date is on
the bike itself.

If you look back in the archives for this site at www.egroups.com
you will
find many previous discussions about this same subject. There is a
lot of
confusion about this sequence of events.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Mac Kirkpatrick

Locked Bent Connecting Rod

I have something of a mystery with my '76 R90s that I'd like to share
with the group for any comments.

I recently had some engine and transmission work done. I have a
bit over 60,000 miles on the bike and it had started to use a little
oil. The "pinging" was getting worse, too, and it was getting more
difficult to tune it out. By "tune", I mean adjust the timing, the
valve lash, etc. The bike is completely stock and had never even had
the heads removed. I know, because I purchased it new in late 1976
and
I've put every mile on it.

Removal of the heads and cylinders revealed a bent connecting rod on
the left side. It was about .100" out of straight.

I don't hot rod the bike, I've never raced it or over revved it- just
regular, rather sedate riding. I've never even had to push-start the
bike. Why would the rod be bent? Could it have been that way from the
factory? The bike sat for about a year at one point, but I've put
over
10,000 miles on it since that happened with no problems.

Anyway, the engine was repaired along with some minor tranny work and
the carbs were rebuilt. Now it runs just like new. But the question
as
to why the rod was bent is a mystery to me!
