Locked Model Year of R90ss

Mac Kirkpatrick

Anthony: Each year BMW and other manufacturers start building next year's
bike about August or September. So the R90s was first built in about August
of 1973 as 1974 models. They then build the 1974 models until the following
August (which is 1975), when they start the 1975 model.

They do this also for the 1976 model, building the 1976 model from say
August 1976 until July of 1977.

So you could have a 1974 model year BMW built in Dec of 1973, and a 1976
model year BMW built in January of 1977, for instance. But the model years
for the R90s was for 1974, 1975 and 1976. The date they are actually built
is not the model year of the bike necessarily.

The certificate of origin or CO or Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (a
"birth certificate" for the bike) states on it the model year for the bike,
at least for the US. I have a copy of an original CO from 1974 that each
dealer used to make a title for the bike. And of course the build date is on
the bike itself.

If you look back in the archives for this site at www.egroups.com you will
find many previous discussions about this same subject. There is a lot of
confusion about this sequence of events.

Hope this helps.

Best,

Mac Kirkpatrick

Jerry: I am sending this email to the R90s internet discussion list and a
few others who might be interested. At
present there are about 66 members in the world.
It is a shame you are selling this pristine bike. I am sure it looked good
in your living room!!!

And to the R90sWorldnet members:

Jerry is fastidious about maintaining his
bikes. You may have seen him at rallys around the US, he gets around a lot.
He lives in CA.
His bikes always have people around them as they are pristine, always!!! He
has an R90/6 with hundreds of thousands on it and it is better that new, and
his R80GS and K75S are likewise pristine.

Kirk: Thanks. Right now the bike is on a stand in pieces....but if I could
see my way, it'll be ready to ride by March. Have 6" of snow on the ground
and temp is about 10 degrees anyway right now.
I am available to do some computer work, if that would help things. Sounds
like the group needs to think of a fund raiser for Frank..to help out
financially. Any ideas anyone???????

Ron, congrat's on the "S". I'm a relatively new owner myself. If you'de like to help, I can only urge you "show your colors" and join the National R90s Sport Owners Club. If you'de like to get get involved futher and give Frank a hand, then let's talk... I'de like to find a way to roll his international members into the club. Any help that you could offer would be welcome.

Locked winter ride

Well, the weatherman blew it, and it was a great Sunday afternoon in Paris. 55F and white puffy clouds so the "ess" was shined up and taken for an afternoon ride. Spring gloves would be enough. Yeh, I admit it, I thought of you guys guess'n about when the first snow would come, and think'n about putting your bikes up for the winter. Not yet for me anyway.

Headed NW thru the "Bois de Bolougne", which is a big city park on the outskirts of Paris. 2 Hours later, on the way back home, spotted a BMW bike dealer, a /2 in the window caught my eye. Pulled up, peered thru the closed shop windows and caught sight of a '75 R90s daytona orange. The sign said 37 thousand Francs, that puts it at about 5 grand US in good condition. Prices are definitely going up.

Heading out Wednesday for 10 days in the states: Atlanta, Orlando, Destin, FL, L.A., Sacramento, Seattle. Won't have time this trip to get to Blue Moon when in Atanta, but if anybody knows any other goods bike shops along the way, let me know.

peace, Kirk in paris

Locked BMW R90s International Register

Frank,
I am in the process of trying to get a European Chapter of the National R90s Sport Owners Club established... who knows, maybe it could be expanded to be an "international chapter" for non-US based members? I travel the world in my job, and could probably eventually meet alot of members in person.
I haven't thought it through completely, but my idea was for each member which we are able to convert from the Registry, that perhaps a part of the initial fee could be paid on to yourself. Kind of like a commission. You would of course have to make the list available to me based on the "honour" system, (I can only assure you that I consider myself to have it).
If you like, you could even remain "executive vice-president in charge of the Oceanic region and all parts on the other side of the world". This might be a nice way for you to stay involved with what is obviously passion of yours.
what do you think? I am open for ideas. Kirk

ps. When I has 17 and the girl I liked didn't reciprocate. I found that spinning donuts on her front lawn helped me deal with it better. It works best with knobby tires, which by the way would be cool on your re-claimed "ess", and I promise the photo would make the website!

G'day Kirk,

It would be neat if we could find a way to roll them into the National R90s
Sport Owners Club. I have already approached them but they're not
interested. From what I gather they only want American riders.

Currently there are 145 members on the Register. Members are from Australia,
America, England, Mexico, Sweden, Canada, Belgium, Germany, France, New
Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Netherlands and Portugal.

Whoever takes over the Register the hard work to establish it is over. Now
it's smooth sailing. In the time I've started the Register I've been to USA
and have been invited to Spain, Sweden and Africa.

I don't know how this might be done or what kind of monetary value you might
place on the membership list. Even I don't know that, all I know is that I'm
bankrupt, fighting not to lose my house (I've lost everything else) I'm just
a shadow of my former self. I agree I'll come good but it will take a few
years. Yes I'll get my beloved R90S back.

In any case, I personnaly am interested to do my part, depending upon what
level of interest there might be with the membership. Can you elaborate
please?

It is not easy to write the following:

In May 2, 1994 I started the BMW R90S International Register. I was
extremely pleased to see it grow in numbers. I was estatic when
through word of mouth I received the first member from overseas.

In May 1996 I had a breakdown when I caught my wife to be in bed with
someone else. I strongly believe that motorcycling and the Register
kept me going.

In June 1997 as part of the healing process I toured America meeting
Register owners. It was a trip that I'll never forget meeting such
riders as Rick Griffiths. Thanks Rick.

In May 2000 my business collapsed resulting in being financially
wiped out. I had no choice but to declared bankruptcy. From a fully
owned house, 3 BMW's (1987 K100RS, 1976 R90S and a 1956 R26) and a
car I was left with practically nothing. Under Australian Bankruptcy
Act I'm not allowed to own more than 1 vehicle. All the bikes had to
be sold. (Thankfully the new owners understand my situation and let
me have access to the bikes. I'm allowed to buy the bikes back after
3 years)

From July 1, I became unemployed, owned a 13 year old car, a Hi-Fi
system, my old computer and a TV. I lost all my life savings leaving
me with a total amount of $174.00.

I was placed on medication due to stress.

I have been fortunate to find employment. From a (House building)
Company Director I now spend 9 hours a day testing, cleaning and re-
labeling car batteries. Currently the biggest battle is not to lose
the house.

This time the Register is not going to keep me going. I can't afford
to keep it running. The cost of postage of the newsletter or the
Annual Report to 150 members from 14 countries is equal to a month of
groceries or a household payment.

Since I don't want to see it fall by the wayside, I have no choice
but to place the Register on the open market and sell it. This was
not an easy decision, I have been debating this action for the last 2
months.

Naturally I prefer to see it go to a R90S member but as a begger I
can't be a chooser.

I promise you this, whoever buys it will be richly rewarded making
contact with so many R90S owners around the world.

I joined the register back in 1995 and then found out that Frank was
planning to come to America the next year. We finally got to meet in the
summer of '96 and spent an entire weekend at our cottage on a lake in
southern Michigan. I couldn't get Frank up on water skiis, but did manage
to
whip him around pretty good on a tube attached to our boat! I think he
also
found out how great Michigan sweet corn is. A lot of beer flowed that
weekend Frank.

One of the highlights was stopping in at the local Harley dealer (about 3
miles from my cottage) where that weekend they had a travelling display in
a
semi trailer. Inside was a Harley model XA, a direct copy from a WWII BMW!
Even Harley couldn't ignore German engineering.

My biggest disappointment was going to Australia last year to work at the
Olympic site and couldn't get the time off to drive down to Melbourne to
visit my old friend. For there waiting for me was Frank's pristine R90s
and
the Australian backroads.

Frank, look at this as a setback. You'll have your S back one day.

Locked Re: 1975 MSRP

I have an idea, with the dollar so strong against the euro, why not fly to Europe, try the beaujolais nouveau, and then pick a an R90s for about $4,000 as sort of a souvenir. I'm not say'n that you'll be money ahead, but what the heck?

Locked Winterising the R90s

G'day all,
Down under we are able to ride all year round however we do "summerise or winterise" our bikes. From winter to summer we
1 replace the wet weather gearwith swimming gear and towels
2 replace the rocket fuel (you call it moon shine) with crushed ice and a slab (24 cans) of beer.

Dear Frank,
First, I'de like to say thanks. I came across your site in the winter of 1999 after I bought my R90s. I can say with all honesty that your enthusiasm and commradery was largely responsible for the passion with I now have for the "ess".
It would be a shame to loose contact with many of the world-wide members of the International Registry. It would be neat if we could find a way to roll them into the National R90s Sport Owners Club. But admittedly, I don't know how this might be done or what kind of monetary value you might place on the membership list. Afterall, we are all hobbyists here, without any business interests. In any case, I personnaly am interested to do my part, depending upon what level of interest there might be with the membership.
Thanks, again. And good luck getting back on your feet... because you gotta buy the "S" back one day so you can do donuts on your ex-wifes front lawn.

Subject: [R90SWORLDNET] BMW R90s International Register

It is not easy to write the following:

In May 2, 1994 I started the BMW R90S International Register. I was
extremely pleased to see it grow in numbers. I was estatic when
through word of mouth I received the first member from overseas.

In May 1996 I had a breakdown when I caught my wife to be in bed with
someone else. I strongly believe that motorcycling and the Register
kept me going.

In June 1997 as part of the healing process I toured America meeting
Register owners. It was a trip that I'll never forget meeting such
riders as Rick Griffiths. Thanks Rick.
