Map issue with software

I've (probably others too) noticed something on the google maps display that "isn't" a feature LOL
?
when i pan and zoom, sometimes the observer markers disappear.?
it happened on the? (11) Parthenope event.
?
when I open the event, sometimes it doesn't show any observers, sometimes 4, including myself. if I pan and zoom in, the observers disappear and I have to zoom out to the 200km level to see them again. other times, i open the map and no observers show up.
?
my default browser?is Chrome, if that?helps.

Hello,

Some parts of what you observed is indeed a feature but other bits are not.

Once an event is selected in the list, OW will make a call to get the list of stations. This will take between 100 or so milliseconds to potentially a second or more, depending on where you are in the world. The server is located in Germany. So if you try to open up the map too quickly (before OW has received the info about the stations back from the server) then it will show only the path and there will be no option for you to announce a station and no stations will be displayed. This is a deficiency in the current implementation and I can look at how to improve the user experience with it. However if you just wait for the markers to appear inside OW before opening the online map, you will never suffer from this problem.

The second part about hiding stations when zooming in however is an important feature. There are 3 types of privacy settings a user can submit their station with: Exact Location, Exact Chord (no location) and Inexact Chord (1km privacy). When users submit a station they choose which option should be used when their position is shared with others.

For the purpose of collaborating on observing events, the only important piece of information is the chord location relative to the other observers and this is also given in OW's main plot with somewhat small resolution of course. For some well observed events however where observers are traveling to a mobile site the GoogleMap will likely be used a lot for planning. For historical reasons I kept showing the locations of the sites at low zoom levels, even that only the chords were important, as some people also like this option. It is however also a very important question of how personal privacy is applied, which the user submitting the station will choose.

The Exact Location option will have the station cursor be present in all zoom levels on GoogleMaps and other observers will be able to zoom-in and see exactly where the location of the station is. This is what the user submitting the station chose.

The Exact Chord (no location) option will only show the station cursor (with factored in random misplacement) on wider maps - small zoom level, but will hide the cursor of the location when you zoom in.

Lastly the Inexact Chord (1km privacy) option will never show the location of the station at any zoom levels.

Generally speaking there should be no reason to go and check the exact location of other's stations on the GoogleMaps for planning purposes, but this location will be displayed for people that have decided to share their exact location. For the other options I have made sure that the exact location is kept private. When planning your mobile station on the GoogleMaps plot, just pay attention to the nearby chords. Chords shown in orange colour are either inexact (to 1 km) or have been submitted with low or inexperienced 'Count on me' indicator, so make sure to pay attention to the nearby chord colours as well when choosing your mobile spot and deciding the best station spacing for an event.

The privacy settings for a station are submitted and applied per station not per account i.e. one observer can choose different privacy settings for every event/station they submit.

Cheers,
Hristo.
