New Owner of Obsession 30"

?

Hi Everyone,

After spending several years immersed in astrophotography, I decided to return to my roots in visual observation. To that end, I've just acquired an Obsession 30" telescope, complete with the original ServoCat and Argus systems. The mirror is currently being sent out for stripping and a fresh coating (IAD). Given that the largest Dobsonian I've used before was a 16" Orion, I'm anticipating a whole new experience with this one.

I'm planning to add a 21mm Ethos and a 31mm Nagler T5 to my setup. Does anyone have any additional recommendations for eyepieces?

Thanks!

?

Omar: Congrats on your new acquisition! I love my 13 mm Ethos on my 20" Classic F5-----clear skies to you! Where are you geographically?located?

Congratulations Omar!!

Remember that the beast will magnify?the light pollution also.? I am in a slow process to build something out under Bortle 1 skies for my 22"UC.? The big glass that you and I possess deserve dark skies.? May I also suggest that you visit TeleVue website as there is a chart that you can input two pieces of information and it calculates the magnification, field stop, FOV, and other factors that may help you determine what eyepiece to purchase.? You may also know about it.

I went a little overboard and gathered the near complete set of Ethos eps.? I have my favorites, and the 31 Nagler is often the first ep used in my manual searches.? I am chasing fuzzy galaxies all the time.? I am very envious of your aperture.

Clear skies,
Frank Nowatzke

My Ethos 13 is in my scope 80% of the time...

It¡¯s a little hard to make recommendations on a 30¡± as I have no experience at that size but for my 20¡± f5 classic I use my 31mm Nagler (the termi-nagler ?), and my 13, 17, and 21mm Ethos the most (target dependent). If you are interested in Planetary you may want a higher power (I find Jupiter through these large scopes absolutely mesmerizing). You¡¯d need to scale to your FL to have a comparison to EPs that will give you comparable magnifications.?
Congratulations on your new Obsession?

21mm and 31mm is probably all you really need.

IMO, I would save the money for potential upgrades to the scope itself before spending more on eyepieces that you may, or may not use as much as, for example; a really nice feathertouch focuser, a really nice filterslide, or some good dew heaters, a battery bank, a good tablet for navigation, a good astro camera, or even just some really high quality O2 and/or HA filters.

With a 30" scope, you are probably going to need a fairly large ladder, and the quality of that ladder is going to make a big difference in your ability to enjoy and or share the enjoyment of your new scope.

Those are just a few of the things I'm wishing I had purchased for my Obsession 20" classic when I "upgraded" from a UC18. I wish I spent some money upgrading scope instead of buying a bunch of eyepieces I rarely use. I wish I had bought higher quality filters, I should have upgraded the braces for the UTA on my UC18, or the center mirror bracing/adjustment setup. I've even thought about upgrading the aluminum tubing to carbon fiber (i.e. less expansion/contraction/flex)

The biggest gripe with my current setup (i.e. a fairly old 20" classic) is that the clamps I have holding the UTA on the truss rods are really quite crappy. A really great solution to replace them probably costs as much as, or possibly more than, a nice Nagler.

Just a few ideas for you to ponder.

Hope you get lots of time to enjoy that huge scope!

/Josh

Thank you all for your feedback. Aside from the mirror, everything¡ªincluding the mirror box and other components¡ªis in excellent condition. The electronics are functioning perfectly, and the original owner upgraded the focuser to a Starlight. Included is the shroud (in like-new condition) and the ladder purchased from Obsession. I expect to have the mirror back in a few weeks and plan to replace the sling with the Howie Glatter version.

I¡¯m also working on the trailer, a 6'x10', as this scope will need to be transported to dark sky sites. My home base is under a Bortle 8 light dome, but Jenny Jump State Park is nearby, and another option is Cherry Springs in Pennsylvania. I hope to eventually make it to the Texas Star Party one day.

Thanks again, Omar

Hi Omar, I have a UC22 and I would recommend that you invest in the SIPS from starrylight. It's an integrated paracorr to the focuser as I suppose you have a compatible feather touch focuser on your 30. Your scope will be permanently corrected for coma and always tuned perfectly whatever eyepiece you insert in the focuser. Besides as eyepieces you need to have ethos to cover from ~x100 to ~x400 according to your focal length. For me it's useless to go beyond for visual beautiful views and you might add a telemate X2 or not to build tour range for planetary observation, Jupiter and Saturn deserves 500 on some lights but it's rare, you will enjoy picture like views in your 30 for sure. I have a nagler 31, ethos 21, 13 and 8mm. I suspect that you do not need the 8mm ;-)
I just added astrophotography 1.5 years ago to my practice but my observation nights at UC22 are something else ?
Enjoy and clear skies Fr¨¦d¨¦ric?
