HUMBLE SOLUTION FOR ALT CABLE DISLODGING

Hello everyone! My name is Steve Anolik
I'm a newbie Obsession owner.
I have been away from Astronomy for 30+ years and many things have stayed the same and many, many things have changed.
I am the proud owner of an Obsession 15" UC F4 AN/SC that,?for me,?works like a charm.
PLEASE, I do not want to get 'political' about this. Mine is bigger, mine is better, mine doesn't work properly, etc.For me, at 76 years old, this particular telescope fits the bill.? Easy set-up and tear down for me and my fellow astronomer Mike. Easy to take to our local 'dark sight'. The eyepiece at zenith is at my eye level (no ladder). The glorious wonders of the universe at my fingertips!
The frist many months were a challenge, to say the least.
A big shout out to Greg Myers and Dave Kriege for all their patience and help for an 'old codger' and who put us on the right track.
One of the biggest issues we encountered, and most persistent pain? in the butt, was the hassle when the ALT cable gets dislodged.
Here is my solution:
A 1.23" key ring!
As you can see in the photos, placing the key ring through the top most hole under the toggle switch is my answer. Once placed, the toggle cannot go down any further (to dislodge the ALT cable) and happens to be in the sweet spot (at least for us it works) to allow the ALT motor to run smoothly.
Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and pass along a 'low tech' answer that hopefully can help others having this persistent problem.the way it has helped, and continues to help us.

Hi Steve,

?

Welcome to the ObsessionUsers group!

?

That is a very clever modification to create a mechanical stop for the ServoCAT ALT cable clutch.

?

A few years ago, I moved the cable up to the second turn of the spring instead of using the hook on the bottom of the spring to increase the tension a bit while engaged.

?

An unplanned benefit was that the relaxed position is fully disengaged but will not allow the cable to jump out of position. ?

?

Richard

Likewise with Chris. I downsized from a 22"UC to a 15" Classic. It's a breeze to set up (at my age) and the views are great. (And no ladder!)
Al

Hi Christine.
Yes, my UC 15 is just about the right size.
It's the largest aperture that is still manageable.
We are finally settling in with it and enjoy the precious few good night we get here in Maryland near Washington DC.
Steve

Hi Richard.
I will take a look at your 'unplanned' solution.
I sounds more elegant.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Al.
Wow. I wish that I had an 18 or 22 before I got to my age now.
The 15 UC woks well.
We also? got hooked up with Sky Safari 7 Pro and use it wirelessly.
What a difference that makes.
Thanks,
Steve
