Classic Obsession wood maintenance
I have a 20¡± f5 classic. I was wondering what everyone with classic Obsession telescopes is doing to maintain the wood parts. I have pretty much just dusted mine off but after a move to AZ from OR and the significantly dryer climate, does anyone use things to replace/restore/protect their mirror boxes, etc.?
Thanks |
Dave has historically recommended an annual or bi-annual coating of wood wax. Ive used Johnson and Johnson once a year. I do it in the garage on a mild day and let it dry/air out.

Thanks! The saddest thing is that J&J is no longer made. I have some (Amateur Woodworker) but need to find a substitute

Hello, I also have a 20" f5 classic, and I have had it for almost 10 years. I only use it 3-4 times a year, typically for about a week each time. In the late fall, we typically get LOTS of dew overnight.
I do find I have to wipe?excess moisture off the scope in the morning. I usually only see any moisture accumulating after really cold night sessions in late fall. I do like to leave it in the sun to let it air dry, before packing it away.? We do live in a fairly?dry climate so moisture isn't typically a concern. Although it might not be the?best idea, I haven't felt the need to do anything special besides wiping or blowing off excess dust buildup and I do gently wash the mirror once every several years, but only if the?dust buildup on the mirror starts to bother my?OCD. The scope is almost 30 years old so I am planning on getting the mirror recoated one of these winters. Otherwise, I do almost?nothing, and IMO the scope still looks the same as it did when I bought it. :-) Just my experience. ¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks! I¡¯m the original owner of mine, purchased in 2009. In Oregon there was enough ambient humidity but here in Arizona I worry about the wood drying out. I¡¯ll probably just wax it for now On Jan 21, 2024, at 5:17?PM, Josh Sehn <joshsehn@...> wrote:
