Re: HUMBLE SOLUTION FOR ALT CABLE DISLODGING

Likewise with Chris. I downsized from a 22"UC to a 15" Classic. It's a breeze to set up (at my age) and the views are great. (And no ladder!)

Hi Steve,

?

Welcome to the ObsessionUsers group!

?

That is a very clever modification to create a mechanical stop for the ServoCAT ALT cable clutch.

?

A few years ago, I moved the cable up to the second turn of the spring instead of using the hook on the bottom of the spring to increase the tension a bit while engaged.

?

An unplanned benefit was that the relaxed position is fully disengaged but will not allow the cable to jump out of position. ?

Subject: [ObsessionUsers] HUMBLE SOLUTION FOR ALT CABLE DISLODGING

?

Hello everyone! My name is Steve Anolik
I'm a newbie Obsession owner.
I have been away from Astronomy for 30+ years and many things have stayed the same and many, many things have changed.
I am the proud owner of an Obsession 15" UC F4 AN/SC that,?for me,?works like a charm.
PLEASE, I do not want to get 'political' about this. Mine is bigger, mine is better, mine doesn't work properly, etc.For me, at 76 years old, this particular telescope fits the bill.? Easy set-up and tear down for me and my fellow astronomer Mike. Easy to take to our local 'dark sight'. The eyepiece at zenith is at my eye level (no ladder). The glorious wonders of the universe at my fingertips!
The frist many months were a challenge, to say the least.
A big shout out to Greg Myers and Dave Kriege for all their patience and help for an 'old codger' and who put us on the right track.
One of the biggest issues we encountered, and most persistent pain? in the butt, was the hassle when the ALT cable gets dislodged.
Here is my solution:
A 1.23" key ring!
As you can see in the photos, placing the key ring through the top most hole under the toggle switch is my answer. Once placed, the toggle cannot go down any further (to dislodge the ALT cable) and happens to be in the sweet spot (at least for us it works) to allow the ALT motor to run smoothly.
Anyway, just wanted to say Hi and pass along a 'low tech' answer that hopefully can help others having this persistent problem.the way it has helped, and continues to help us.

Re: Astro photos with a UC18

Hi Richard,
it looks very similar to what I see visually through my UC22 (with less brightness on the nebula ;-)) it's a beautiful job.
I have to say that I complemented my UC22 and classic 15 with a dedicated astrophoto setup and this is a very different but pleasant hobby when I cannot drive with my UC to my rural dark site in a region called "le Perche".
Clear skies, Frédéric

Astro photos with a UC18

All,

The Mallincam DS287 (monochrome or color) camera can make your Obsession telescope even more fun (I use the UC18).? The camera gives you about the same FOV as a 10mm eyepiece.

The ServoCAT does my tracking and the MallincamSKY software can actually de-rotate/stabilize my UC18 to create great photos.

I normally use 5 to 10 second exposures and engage the camera "stacking" of about 10 subs to average out the noise in order to increase the signal to noise ratio.

I used the Optolong LeNhance filter in my Astrocrumb filter slide for the Witch's Broom nebula.

New camera needs an extra inch

Hi all,

My new Mallincam camera DS10cTEC “may” need me to reduce the distance between the primary and secondary by an inch or so. ?I am playing with emachineshop.com to make a truss bracket replacement for my UC18 original bracket. ?When I get the camera i will first try adjusting the primary all the way up before deciding the final dimensions of the new brackets i am designing.

Anyone else ever needed to modify their UC brackets?

Richard

Re: Would you mount a PiFinder on your Obsession?

Hi Richard
I've just had a ScopeDog eFinder plus drives installed on my 15" Classic.? These work in conjunction with a Nexus Pro with WiFi and Sky Safari, plus the original 8192 encoders.? The ScopeDog is based on a Raspberry Pi and nestles in the base unit quite snuggly. The camera we used for the eFinder is one I already had - a ZWO ASI120 MC.? Early days yet as I've only had the chance to test it just the once since installation.but I'm delighted!

Re: Would you mount a PiFinder on your Obsession?

Edited

Hi Richard,
I recently added an astrophoto setup (newton 200F5 EQ6R) to my UC22 and classic15. I run the astrophoto setup with NINA and a mele quieter computer controled? over wifi with remote desktop from my tablet and I was asking myself: "it would be nice to have platesolve on my UC22 directly linked to my servocat". Pifinder sits between this full control including goto and the classic AN/SC tandem. Using it with AN/SC it could help you to align without using a cross haired eyepiece and complete a goto with a better "spiral search". That's a good idea anyway and it costs much less that my configuration if you include the pointing scope and camera that would be necessary to let it work.

I saw that, but for push to I think youre better off using a Nexus II and an iPad ( or Android tablet) with Sky Safari. Simpler IMHO

?That overlaps with the Eldorado Star Party in west Texas (Oct. 9-14).? Several of us Obsession owners will be there, very near the centerline of the annular eclipse on the 14th.

Subject: [ObsessionUsers] Anyone going to the Peach State Star Gaze Oct 8-15

Any Obsession owners planning to attend the Peach State Star Gaze in Georgia?

I am hoping to upgrade my astro camera prior to the event (might be my fault if it rains).

If you’re interested in visiting the astronomy village, the Atlanta Astronomy Club hosts a Peach State Star Gaze each year at Deerlick, and this year it’s being held from?Oct. 8-15, 2023.

Re: Need Obsession 15" UC manual

I just received the manual from?Gregg Anderson.? Thanks everyone.??

Re: Need Obsession 15" UC manual

All the references that I found to the 15" was for the classic, not UC.? I bought the 15" UC used and the seller did not have a manual.? So any help would be appreciated.??

My main problem is getting the altitude cable back on the motor spindle for the servocat.
thanks
