No I clamp it to a truss tube. Sometime far down the truss to point with my feet on the ground. And I have a riser for the telrad mounted at the eyepiece so I can see that from the ground as well.

You can also use a Pole Clamp for a camera and move the clamp as needed for balance.
Assumes your finder is 1/4-20 female mount.

BTW, I use the Argo Navis as a GOTO. I find it works great and great support. I do not use the motor drive the the GPS.

? That would be a 10x50 University Optics finder with an erecting prism and cross hairs eyepiece. The dew controller is attached to a Markless Astronomics Big Dob Dewbuster Brackett (). I do not have dew heaters for the primary as it is surrounded by Kydex and a shroud. The secondary dew heater is a Kendrik as I like the very flat design up against the glass. You see the extra Kydex on the UTA to help with light and maybe dew reduction.
Yes, I do need counterweights: an assortment of lead weights tossed out by a local garage mechanic. I put them in a nylon bag my wife was pitching and the bag is attached with a "S" hook to a truss knob on the bottom of the mirror box.

Thank you so much for the information.? This is perfect! just what I was looking for.? Another user suggested there might be balance issues on a UC18.? I am guessing you have had none. May I ask what brand finder you purchased?? I really like you set up ?.? I see you have heated filters also.? I have? them but have not installed them yet.? Do you have any suggestions for dew control on the primary mirror and optics?? I have the dew heater on the diagonal mirror but the other day it still dewed up on me. ?

I've used a 10x50 on a 20" Classic as well as its successor, a 22" UC. I made an aluminum "L" bracket screwed into the UTA. See attached image which also shows the bracket for a red dot finder adjacent to it.

I've used a 10x50 on a 20" Classic as well as its successor, a 22" UC. I made an aluminum "L" bracket screwed into the UTA. See attached image which also shows the bracket for a red dot finder adjacent to it.

Hello All,
The discussion about mounting a finderscope has brought up another question for me. Which finderscope? My vision is not what it used to be and I am considering adding a standard RACI finderscope. I have a 20” f5 classic. Debating between a 9x50 and 13x80 Stellarvue. I am leaning towards the 9x50 as I think it will be easier to use for alignment of the Argo/StellarCAT system. Am I wrong? Which would you recommend and why?

It's a metal piece that bolts onto the upper rim and then has screws for holding a finder base. Essentially a piece angle iron (aluminum) with two approximately 2" screws in. I don't now it they if they are still available. I think Dave is winding down his activities. I'm sure a small shop could make one.

There are times when it would be a problem but a laser pointer might work.

As far as I know Dave is fine.? I had a question for him a couple of months
ago and he was on vacation.

The 13x80 is a big finderscope, easy to mount on a Classic but might be more problematic with the UC which is probably less forgiving than a Classic balance-wise.

I have an 18 UC and use Telrad mounted to the optical tube assembly. It is my favorite finder!

It did not come with one.? There is a tube on the UTA for the counter weight.? Dave tightly zip ties the base?
for a TelRad on to that at the bottom of the tube.? It works well.
