Re: Three legged ladder
Bob, ?Thanks so much?for the info. You got some steps from an old ladder (donation?ladder)??to add to your astronomy ladder, ?Do you remember how you got the steps off the donation?ladder? ?That was were I am seeing rivets etc.?

Once?you got the steps off did you:? Drill?holes into the side rails of the astronomy ladder?to attach the steps you were adding and use nuts and bolted to attach the new steps? ?Hope these questions make sense. I am just?trying to make a safe ladder. Yours looked really solid. ? ? On Friday, July 9, 2021, 11:49 AM, bobrose500 <bobrose500@...> wrote:

I did not risk removing the factory steps. Just added some in. Do remember that any modifications to the ladder will probably void any manufacture warranty/liability.? That being said, it is a lot more comfortable on your feet and back.

Hello,
I just joined this group.? I was a member of the old group and have missed the postings.? I own a 25" F/5 Classic Obsession and have been saving for a tripod ladder.? Unfortunately I guess I waited too long.? ?Strathmore and Tallman no longer make their Astronomy tripod ladders.? I have been considering purchasing a Werner tripod ladder and altering it by adding steps in between the existing steps like Bob mentions in January 2020 post.? Anyone have any advice on how to do this safely (add the extra steps) and not compromise the integrity of the ladder?? I thought of buying a used standard Werner ladder and somehow use its steps for the added steps.? Most of these ladders have the steps riveted on and I'm not sure how the undo the rivets.? Any other advice on where I could find an 8 or 9 foot tripod ladder with steps that are 6"-8" apart?? Thanks, Craig |

Bahtinov mask for UC18 made with my jig saw from 1/8" plywood
All,
So I pulled out my jig saw and crudely cut out my Bahtinov mask for my UC18 from from 1/8" plywood left over from a furniture project (since I still don't have compelling reasons to purchase a CNC machine yet). It is shaped like an 18" doughnut with 3 notches on the center hole so it just fits on the UC18 OTA around the top of the secondary mirror. It works great, but I don't fully understand the physics of why it works. It makes a pair of opposing crows feet looking diffraction spikes on a bright star. The center diffraction spike moves with the focuser and when centered you get perfect focus (on a bright star). It just takes a second or two to focus and then just lift the mask off the scope and your good to go to your DSO. I have several filters and each one requires re-focus a bit when I change. This was a fun project that I recommend for anyone wanting a simple DIY project or is like me and needs help to get best focus. Richard |

I figured out I needed to also configure the ServoCat telescope with my details before it would accept.

Hello Richard,
In step 7, click on the round grey "Choose" button which has the words "ASCOM.Simulator.Telescope" below it, like in the left hand picture of the guide.? This should bring up a drop down menu, and select ServoCAT from this list: see attached picture, then "OK". Hope this helps,? Greg |

Re: Obsession with SC/AN user guide on groups.io
Hi Richard,
at least what I know is that this kind of question needs much more information about your configuration to trigger insightflul advice. What I would do, is start to check that everything works layer by layer, I mean for example, are you sure that you have a hardware configuration that has proven to establish communication between you PC and servo cat? This sound basically stupid but I spent a lot of time discussing with Gary from stellar cat before discovering that some USB to RS232 adapter that once worked with my previous PC stopped working properly when I changed for a new one. And I would check layer by layer to isolate where the problem is located. This might be useless if you've already done it. Clear skies, Frederic. |
Re: tracking drift 15" classic AN/SC
Check out the Obsession Argo Navis/ ServoCAT guide in the files section of this group.? If you have not set up the location etc of your observing site, you may not know all of the other neat things your scope can do (track satellites like the ISS as it passes overhead, make custom pointing models, etc). There are also guides to set up planetarium control of your scope by smartphone, tablet or PC.

Re: tracking drift 15" classic AN/SC
Thanks everybody. I did contact Gary and problem solved. Turns out the latest version of SC has a feature that prevents trying to track below the horizon. He suggested I check the data in the system. I realized I had never properly entered the location, time, etc. of my observing site. I entered the proper set-up data and now it tracks just fine.

Re: tracking drift 15" classic AN/SC
Hi Donald,
I have seen this before on mine (UC18, SC, AN) and I let the object drift to one side of my FOV and double click the handset button (the opposite direction of the drift) to re-center and then it tracks perfectly. Don't really understand but this seems to always work for me if i ever notice drifting. Richard |

I have never looked through a Morpheus.? But a question: Why would the Morpheus be an 'upgrade'? Ok maybe a slightly larger AFOV.? However I HAVE used?Radians and they have 20mm of eye relief and are very sharp.? Better coatings? Just asking. - J
