Re: ServoCAT + Argo Navis in the "from Planetarium" mode makes for remote operation

I have a 22"UC equipped with SC & AN, When I use the 22" I ordinarily go to "From Planetarium" mode immediately after the two star alignment,
with a SkyFi III module connected to the S/C, I enter the SkyFi network on?either my tablet, or on my astronomy computer via BlueStacks Android emulator.
From there I use Sky Safari to connect to, and control the scope.?

I have not tried to use my 22 for imaging purposes, though I am impressed with the images You are able to get with your 18" and the Mallincam.
For imaging purposes I have an 11" Celestron RASA on a CGXL mount that I use when I want to image.?
I use an ASIAir, and ZWO cameras to image with. I process with Siril, and Photoshop.

That is a great shot Richard,?and under light polluted?skies!!? Could you even see this 8 x 6 arcmin +11.5 mag object in your eyepiece?? I use Sky Safari 7 Pro on my i-Phone with Ski Fy and it controls my UC 22 just fine.? I haven't thought of pictures, but you make it sound easy and enjoyable.? I could learn a lot from you.? I built a 36" f/4.5 (f/5.17 with ParaCorr) alt-az scope, looks like a big Obsession, and it uses ServoCAT and Argo Navis in "From Planetarium" mode, plus The SkyX-Pro on a Win7 laptop bolted to the scope.
TSX-P has a Slew button that sends the coord's to AN. TSX-P also has a plate-solve slew called Closed Loop Slew which was working on a 60mm f/5 refractor with a StarShoot Autoguider camera and now I'm getting it running on a Short Tube 80 with a Canon 450D. I cannot use the CLS with my Canon 60Da on the 36" as the true field of view is only 10.8'x16.2' and Software Bisque advised it could be hit or miss with so small a piece of sky, so co-aligned separate scope works. Autoguiding is hoped to get working on a C8 and the SSAG.
Another Win7 laptop can connect to the scope Win7 via ad hoc network.
Attached 2.5-second exposure of The Ring Nebula, ISO 6400, Canon 60Da, Paracorr, taken just before midnight local time, through the 36-inch f4.5 at my observatory in Overgaard. Arizona.

Re: Can anyone recommend a focus motor?

Mike,
?
I have installed a Primalucelab motorized focuser model Sesto Senso 2 on my UC18 to interface with the feathertouch focuser that Obsession mounted.
?
?
I have also mounted their windows PC (Eagle 4S) on the bottom of the telescope so I can remote control the entire telescope from inside my house.

thanks very much, and I'll take a look at this.

Starlight Instruments makes the HSM20 moto-focus unit that¡¯ll fit your FeatherTouch. You might get one direct from them or perhaps Woodland Hills or High Point Scientific might have one in stock¡

However, I am worried that the gear wheel on the motor has a diameter that is too great and will not fit on the focuser shaft without touching the base of the focuser.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a make that will fit and work for my telescope, please?? I am happy to have a hand controller and do not necessarily need to connect to and be controlled by my laptop.

Re: Tablet stalk recommendation for 18UC?

I ended up going down another route. I bought this inexpensive tablet mount on Amazon:
?
I clamped it to a strut via the slit included in the shroud. I tried it at a star party over the weekend and found that I really liked having the tablet right next to me all the time. It was easy to quickly look at the view in SkySafari and compare it to what I saw in the eyepiece.? I forgot to take a picture, but I will do that next time I am out.
?
That does not give me a solution for holding eyepieces, but for me that was secondary to the tablet.

Yeah, I know what a nice tool they are - I've got a 3rd party mask for my 8" Celestron Edge HD. I do not have a 3D Printer, but my son does. I used one of the online mask generators, but my son couldn't figure out how to quarter it to print, and he's far enough away that I don't get down to see him and play with it myself. I've got a nice Mallincam and am using SharpCap, so have the tools on that end of things. Now if I could only get a clear sky some night.

Re: 3D printing a Bahtinov mask for my UC18

Just information here guys. I have a 22" UC, and I have an 11" Celestron RASA, I have a Bahtinov mask that I purchased specifically for use on the 11" RASA,
it has a hole in the middle of it similar in size to the RASA central obstruction.?

When I need to confirm focus on my 22" UC, I simply balance the 11" mask on the secondary cage of the 22" UC and it seems to work just as if it were a full aperture mask for focusing.
It can hang there kind of sideways, or crooked, and it does not seem to make a difference.

I am considering cutting 3 notches in the central hole of the mask just to make it center up better with the three bars that support the secondary on the 22".

My conclusions after trying this are:?
(1) the Bahtinov mask does not necessarily have to be perfectly centered to do its job well
(2) the mask does not necessarily have to cover the full aperture to do its job well
(3) when using it, most of the time I find out that it just "Confirms" that I have already achieved the best focus by eye!, and I have wasted my time dragging out the mask, but I "feel" much better.

So for what it is worth, there you go, hope this info helps somebody.

Mark (and others),
?
Here is a link to an on-line tool with which one can create an .svg or .dxf file of a custom-sized Bahtinov mask:
?
?
On that webpage there are links for two other mask designs, in addition to the classic one:? a "tri-bahtinov mask" and a "second modified tri-bahtinov mask".

Re: 3D printing a Bahtinov mask for my UC18

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Mark,

I created a Bahtinov mask in CAD with a hole to fit over the secondary and 3 notches to rest on the Obsession style secondary support. ?I have one more section to print to complete this version #2.

My first version was made out of 1/8¡± plywood. ?This second version is printed on my new 3D printer in quarters and glued together.

These make really nice ¡°crows feet¡± patterns. ?Adjust your focus for a centered middle toe of the crows foot for perfect focus on a bright star.

Our Obsession telescopes outfitted with ServoCAT and Argo Navis tracking will deliver great astrophotography once you achieve focus. ?

Do you have a 3D printer??

In case you want to power your telrad from your scope power rather than internal batteries. ?I added a 12 volt dc to 3.3 volt dc converter and a DC power connector to power up my telrad. ?Never have to worry about leaving the Telrad on at the end of the observation session.

Thanks, I will. I¡¯m thinking a shelf for the iPad and another shelf with holes to hold a couple eyepieces will be useful.?

Re: Tablet stalk recommendation for 18UC?

Echoing Bill's comment.
?
Mike Zammit fabricated a new dual-shelf stalk for my Teeters 14.5" f/5 which I recently completed a ServoCAT kit install on.
?
Mike's work is both functional and beautiful and he can provide cabling built-in to the stalk to suit your desired peripherals.
?
If you need more than just a support for your Argo or Nexus, give him a call and discuss your needs. If you need a second shelf for an iPad or tablet, he can do that too!

Best,
Gordon
