Yeah the dentist screwing over Gary is a long running saga. It's SEVEROCAT's fault my assembler person screwed up your drive. ?And Gary? He says "they are my bread and butter" maker, I can not complain. What a shame. And customer complaints should be ignored. What fool said that? Is THAT what this list is about? Just a bunch of fan boys and girls telling the dentist what a WONDERFUL PERSON HE IS? Oh yes!!! And I am sure whoever wrote that NEVER EVER was dissatisfied with a purchase.? How sad. I mean HOW SAD.? |
Re: Thanks Dave for such a fun instrument (UC18)
Richard,
Thanks for providing that - really great stuff! ?I have been using my UC18 successfully for 15 years for visual observing. ?This definitely gives me something to think about! ?I live in a city under a canopy of 100 foot tall oaks and streetlights that completely obscure the sky. ?I have to drive 40 miles to access clear dark skies, so it is the Ultra Compact nature of the UC18, which is its defining characteristic, that I value the most. ?I never would have been able to use a heavier scope, such as the Classic, as often as I have the UC18. ?I've gladly accepted the obvious limitations imposed by the design tradeoffs inherent in creating such a lightweight and portable design, because I'd rather spend time at the eyepiece of a less than perfect instrument than looking at a perfect one stored in its crate at home. ? Re: Thanks Dave for such a fun instrument (UC18)
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýWoes concerning the UC series are not uncommon.? Here are mine.? In 2017 I bought a nearly new Obsession 18UC from a fellow using?AstroMart.??He had ordered the scope from Obsession and while it was being built contracted a debilitating medical condition that forced him to sell his scope after it was delivered.??He was never able to even look through the scope as his wife was unable to set it up for him.??I managed to acquire the scope at quite a discount.??It was loaded but did not have?ServoCat?installed.??I purchased a?ServoCat?Jr. system from Gary at?StellarCAT?who provided hours of technical assistance in getting a working installation.??Thus began my love, hate-hate relationship with my Obsession 18UC.??The optics were superb, however the mechanical implementation of those optics in the UC platform was flawed.??The design criteria that the scope must fit inside the 26.5¡± cube airline box was probably the root of the?telescopes?stability issues.??As to meet?this criteria, many shortcuts had to be taken.??All of which contributed to the inability of the scope to hold collimation?during the course of?an evening¡¯s viewing.??The other significant issue with the scope is the amount of flex in the scope when being driven by the?ServoCAT?system.??If you were looking at an object under high power and you needed to ¡°tweak¡± its position in altitude just a smidgeon to recenter it in the eyepiece¡¯s FOV you were in for a very frustrating experience.??Normally you would select the lowest guide speed on the?ServoCAT?hand pad and poke the up/down motor control buttons as necessary to recenter.??With my 18UC if the last direction the scope had travelled was the same direction you needed to move to recenter, you might get lucky and get it recentered without much fuss.??However, if the direction was opposite of the scopes last altitude movement the scope¡¯s Virtual Mirror Box (VMB) would shift so significantly in the Rocker Box (RB) that the object of interest would be thrown about a half of a degree out of the field of view, then the dance to recenter trying to overcome the VMB and RB slop would ensue.??The slop between the VMB and RB caused me hours and hours of grief as well as many $$$ trying to correct.??I spent a very significant amount of time on the phone with Dave K. of Obsession and Gary with?StellarCAT?trying to resolve the issue.??Dave K. finally gave up and simply told me that the scope met his design criteria.??After three years of fighting this scope, I basically packed it away when we moved to Colorado.??I ended up finding another Obsession Classic scope (20¡± F5) on AstroMartand have been happy with it.??It is not an ideal telescope for public outreach as the climb to the eyepiece when near zenith was a strong concern.??So, I used the Obsession Classic 20¡± for personal viewing only.??In 2022 I found that Astro System, the maker of the?Telekit?wood kits for Dobsonian telescopes, would?actually build?the wood enclosure of the?Telekit?for you. I contacted Randy at Astro Systems and?made arrangementswith him to build a new enclosure for my 18¡±.??I removed all of the telescope¡¯s guts (optics, electronics, focuser, motors, DSC, and finders) and took everything to Astro Systems in La Salle Colorado, about a four-five hour?trip from my rural home in Westcliffe in May of this year.??Randy built my new enclosure, reconfigured (with the help of Gary at?StellarCA) my?ServoCAT?Jr. system to work with the?Telekit.??I picked the scope up last week after about 2 1/2 months and brought the scope home.??After some initial configuration setting issues with the Nexus DSC and the?ServoCAT?(different size bearings and ground board changed the gear ratios) I took the scope outside in the light of a 89% full moon last night and did a single alignment with two stars and then told the new scope to go the binary pair WZ CAS and lo and behold the scope zipped on over and placed the pair within the FOV of my 10mm Pentax XW eyepiece.??Next was Albireo, it was a little toward the edge of the?FOV?so I selected the lowest guide speed on the?ServoCAT?and was able to center Albireo perfectly.??I purposely moved it all over the FOV alternating between the up/down motor controls and the amount of slop was not even noticeable.??I can not express my gratitude with Randy of Astro Systems and especially with Gary at?StellarCAT?whose patience and perseverance helped me achieve the full potential of the original guts of my former Obsession 18UC.??Now I proudly proclaim that I have an 18TK that works like a dream.?? ? I had serious conversations with Webster Telescopes, DOC Telescopes in Italy, New Moon Telescopes, and Teeter Telescopes Before I chose Astro Systems for my rehost project.??So if you are experiencing frustration with your Obsession UC telescope, I whole heartedly recommend rehosting your telescope¡¯s ¡°guts¡± into another host, and I will attest that Astro Systems was the best choice for me, and probably for you as well. ? ? v/r Chuck Jagow Future ??????? Then DO NOT buy from Obsession. Because the dentist ignores complaints or tries to pass them off to subcontractors. Yeah It's been 5 years or more. And never once has he admitted he, or whoever built my UC-22, screwed it up.? No worries, I fixed his screw ups. Just sad that he never ever owned up to it.? It's like you buy a BMW, the A/C fails in the first month, and BMW says "Sorry, contact the compressor manufacturer for help!"? |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHi Guillaume, ? Attached is a photo with the Eagle4S mounted on a homemade plywood bracket that attaches where the wheelbarrow handles normally attach. ? ? And here is the block diagram of the equipment connections (just realized this does not show my focuser) ? ? One of the key elements of this was the Pegasus USB3 hub that has the ability to use all previous versions of USB at the same time. ? ServoCAT uses USB 2.0 while my Mallincam video camera uses USB 3.0.? I have not found any other USB hub that supports all USB protocols at the same time except for the Pegasus hub. ? Hello Richard, You're right it's a great instrument, perfectly made. For my part, I have the classic 18¡± version. I will be very interested to know your fully automatic configuration, because I am considering a configuration of this type, eagle pro 4 works well with the SC system ? the connection is made directly to the USB port or PC port of the SC then you switch AN in planetarium? is that right? What focuser autofocus system do you use? I would be really happy to gather some information about your type of configuration.. Thank you very much,? Guillaume ( France) |

Thanks Dave for such a fun instrument (UC18)
All,
?
After my 2 star alignment last night I set the Argo Navis to 'From Planetaruim" and retired to my recliner to "remote into" the telescope computer.
?
My UC18 dob "system" then sat out on my deck in range of my wifi and performed flawlessly powered over 8 hours by a 55 amp hour battery.
?
The ServoCAT and powered ground board provide the rotating power contacts and motion control with perfect interaction with Argo Navis.? Mallincam gets it power through these rotating contacts.
?
There is something very satisfying about all these systems working together to give me this remote observing capability from a dob.
?
In addition to these systems that grant me remote imaging capability, the Argo Navis has a second serial port that will give you lots of details (can tell you where is the telescope pointing at the instant in time for your data needs), my Eagle4S supports web query to report the SQM of the 5 degree section of the sky where the telescope is pointing, the temperature, humidity, dew point, Battery voltage, current consumption, remaining power of the battery, GPS parameters.? I then copy every parameter of the Mallincam camera (lots of parameters) with one button click and paste into a MS Access database along with the full file name of each image I capture.? I am still working on capturing the focus motor position index.? I have already characterized the relative focus position for each of my filters so I can "perfectly" set the focus if I ever remotely change filters.
?
In summary, I am having more fun that a human should be allowed to have.? I can remotely slew, focus, change filters, read and store all my sensor data along with all my camera settings (thanks for the MCS diagnose screen with the copy button to capture each setting of the camera!).
?
Thanks to all those subject matter experts that have enabled me to have such a fun hobby.
?
I am really impressed with the MCS deep sky stacking mode that de-rotates each stack and how well it works.? After just a few stacks there is so much detail being pulled out of the noise.
I fell asleep while stacking NGC6992 and woke up at stack #200--looked really great. Next project:? capture images from multiple nights to create a mosaic by returning to the camera settings of the previous night.
Thanks to Dave K. for making such a fine instrument that I am enjoying so much. Regards,
?

Re: UC18 and DS287C star party April 9 and 10 2022 for Galaxy season (1 of 2)
Jim, ? I use Argo Navis and ServoCAT.? The goto accuracy is basically good for short slews but is challenged if I slew more than say 90 degrees (yes I installed the powered ground board by myself and mostly got the pivot bolt in the center).? I frequently sync with Stellarium to keep accommodate my issues.? The DS287C on the UC18 has a very small field of view so if I miss the next target it is not a big deal.? I have the Cat PAW RF hand pad for the ServoCAT and just do a quick spiral search to find and then re-sync to Stellarium in just a few seconds.? I really enjoy my system since I added all the extras to make it a remote system. ? The tracking is good enough to let me do up to 30 second exposures. ?I stack 8 to 10 of the 30 second exposures.? The MallincamSky software can de-rotate if I get the contrast high enough.? I have a blast when I can see detail in M106, M51, M64, NGC2903 etc.? I really enjoy the ¡°big¡± targets that require me to stitch 8 or more photos like NGC6888 or the witch¡¯s broom.? I use MS ICE to stitch and gimp to post process.? M42 requires me to stitch about 20 images. ? If wind shakes my telescope shroud the MallincamSKY software can remove a bit of the vibration. ? Richard |
