Stockton Saturday, 1983
The ATSF and SP crossing, Stockton Diamonds, in Stockton, California. In 1983, SP had 4 tracks here. The UP, former WP crossing of the ATSF was behind me. Today, the WP crossing is gone and the ex-SP line is down to 2 tracks here. But, it is still a busy place to watch trains. I only wish I'd hung out here more in SP, WP and ATSF days. 4 July 1983 Mike Tisdale

Elvas Sunday, 2016
In June 2016, I took a Capitol west from Roseville and saw how much work has been done on the new McKinley Village development between the UP Martinez Sub and Business 80 freeway in Sacramento, near Elvas. On 3 July 2016, I took the dogs for walk and checked it out. An underpass is being built near Elvas junction, requiring temporary realignment of some tracks, and buildings are under construction in the new development. I planned my trip trip to see #6 come through and I was pleasantly surprised to see heritage P42 156 as second unit on the train. It had led the Zephyr in June 2016 when Anne and I went to Truckee. In 2022, McKinley Village is completely built with dozens of new houses and several parks between the freeway and railroad. On clear days, there is a view into the American River Canyon here and at one time the spot was called American on the railroad. Grizzly Meet Friday, 2010
Wiseass answer to a math problem: If a train leave Emeryville, California at 0910 and arrives in Chicago, Illinois 2 days later at 1450 and another train leaves Chicago at 1400 and arrives in Emeryville 2 days later at 1610 and it is 2438 miles between the two end points, where will the trains meet? Answer: Grizzly Siding, just east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, assuming both trains are on time. Show your work: Grizzly siding east of Glenwood Springs in Glenwood Canyon was a classic spot for the CZ to meet in the days when the trains were 17 and 18. Here is a view of the CZs meeting at Grizzly in the 1960s: http://www.flickr.com/.../229111.../in/set-72157618106177556 California Zephyrs Passing in the Canyon - 1968 Now a half century ago and a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since this moment in 1968. Sloat Saturday, 1983
UP 3669's caboose passes UP 3782. UP 3782 east was holding in the Sloat, California siding for UP 3669 west. For some years a group of us camped out at Sloat, between Keddie and Portola in the Feather River Canyon, watching trains, drinking beer, swimming in the river and generally having a good time. We called these campouts the Fry Yer Ass trips, because it was hot in the summer. We even had a logo of a donkey, Donkey Hodie, in a frying pan, and used on t-shirts 25 June 1983 Mike Tisdale

very unusual train on NYC RR in 1930(?)
8
A few months ago someone (Mike T?) said that it was unusual to see a train not pulled by a locomotive. I¡¯m doing this from memory, so I hope I didn¡¯t misquote. A friend sent me the photo below. Classic view of NYC steam, but look at the train. Behind the gondola are 10 cars destined for the new ¡°IND¡± New York subway system, followed by the caboose. Probably built by American Car and Foundry, St. Charles, MO. Phil Burton On Jun 6, 2022, at 8:18 PM, Phil Burton <philip-b@...> wrote: Peter, Procedure was Friday, May 27th. Went well. This is something I¡¯ve wanted to do for a long time, so I have signed up. The tour is from 12:30 to 1:30 PT. I will rush home afterwards, but will probably not be home in time to start our scheduled 2:00pm PT Zoom session. Let me suggest a couple of options: You can start at 2pm without me, and I¡¯ll join you as soon as I can. We can delay our start time to 2:30, and go for 1-1/2 hours instead of our usual 2. We can delay our start time to 2:30, and run until 4:30. I will certainly provide you photos, but probably not quite that quickly. Sorry this messes up our schedule. Phil, hope your procedure goes/went well! --p

Safety Valve Thursday, 2019
Cumbres and Toltec K-36 2-8-2 489 lifting the pops on the 4% at Lobato. This is on the climb from Chama, New Mexico to Cumbres Pass. The fireman must have been hot dogging it to lift the safety valve going up a 4% grade, but the train was only one or two cars over the limit to require a second engine...the next day's train was a bit shorter and didn't have a helper. 9 Oct 2019 Mike Tisdale

American River Wednesday, 2022
I took the dogs for a walk at the American River at Johnston in Sacramento. A westbound train was stopped with its rear end on the bridge. Another westbound and an eastbound came by while we were there and then, after our walk, I drove to the 28th Street grade crossing in mid town Sacramento, where the head end of the stopped train was parked. I didn't see a crew, so maybe this train was run out of Roseville and parked until UP could get a crew. 9 June 2014, Roseville, California, Kyle RR 2037, GP20. At the time, the unit was over 50 years old. Not a lot of GP20s were built and by 2014, one still running with its turbocharger was a rare site. Even more unusual was a Kyle unit on the UP in Roseville Mike Tisdale
