Haggin Tuesday, 2009

January 18, 2009?

At Haggin, we see UP 4978 leading a westbound manifest as it crosses over the ex-WP Sacramento Sub. In the distance, through the underpass, the Sac Sub's American River bridge can be seen. The units are EMD SD70Ms.

2022: Today this has changed. The C Street grade crossing is closed and fenced off, so you'd need to walk in from D Street along the Sacramento Sub to stand here.

Both railroads here are Oakland, California to Utah routes. The train is on the original Central Pacific transcontinental line built in the 1860s. It is headed due west. I'm standing next to the Western Pacific line, which runs north-south between Oroville and Stockton. At Oroville, it turns east to the Feather River Canyon. The CP line is shorter, but the grades over Donner Pass are steeper than the WP line through the canyon.

On the left, the Sacramento Northern Bikeway uses the old SN interurban bridge, just downstream of the WP bridge, to cross the American River and connect with the bike trail on the north side of the river. See less
