Yahoo Groups

Obs Car is set up on both Yahoo and Groups.io .? I post to both and we still have people on both groups.??

If people are getting both Yahoo and Groups.io posts and don't want to see both, I'd suggest unsubscribing from Yahoo Groups Obs Car.? Eventually, Yahoo Groups might go away entirely.? Right now, it has become a mail relay and all the content that was on the web site is gone, saving Yahoo probably petabytes of disk space they no longer have to maintain for all the groups they had.

SP was known for that as well. See "aut0matic buffet car."

Was any effort made to move all the contents of the old Yahoo Observation Car to this new one? ?It was a great archive of posts.

Did anyone even archive the old ObsCar archives? If so, someone with extra time on their hands could pick the highlights for a "Best of" book.

    Hi Sheldon,

We looked at the possibility of moving the Yahoo Group Obs Car to Groups.io.? There was a tool that someone wrote that would have cost and then it would have entailed a fair bit of work to move the Yahoo archive and, frankly, we didn't bother.?

Yes, there was some good stuff there, but I don't think too many people regularly went back and read 6 year old posts.? Much of what was posted was pretty topical and like some old Saturday Night Live skits, would not have aged well.

I still have a lot of old posts from the Yahoo group, but as Mike says, most of them are not worth preserving.? That said, there were some real ¡°characters¡± in that group who don¡¯t seem to be present in this new group.

I respectfully disagree. ?Much of what was posted was great, including stories and personal accounts that will now be unobtainable. ?And moving it over wasn¡¯t all that hard either. ?I know, as I moved my own Yahoo group over to .io groups.

So now all those posting are lost forever. ?This seems very short-sighted in my opinion.

Why does it take cash? ?I moved my Yahoo group at no cost other than a little time to transfer everything.

    Sheldon

    ¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Depends on how much you transfer and when you transferred. ?If you were an early adopter it was ¡°free¡±, but that didn¡¯t last long until this platform started charging to import group files and messages from Yahoo, or elsewhere. ?Groups.io has been charging for more and more, currently there are hard caps on number of members, storage space, and activity levels for a group to remain ¡°free¡± before they start assessing charges. ?I¡¯ve seen several Pass the Hat To Keep Us Alive campaigns on bigger groups. ?
