?

So, we have a partial success this week for our radio check.?

Two radio operators were able to hear me but not each other.? I have to conclude that it has something to do with the GXT1000 and similar walkies limiting transmit power to only 0.5W for CH9.? So, from now on, we will SWITCH to CH2.? CH2 is at 462.587.5MHz.? Please switch your walkies to CH2 and set the transmit power to "M" for 2W.?

Remember, use CH2 from now on.

If you have any questions, please present them here and I will try my best to address them.? Thank you.

Re: Our Next Radio Check

Hi Trish, Paul, and anyone else that did not make contact this evening,

I'm sorry I missed your call.? I will do an informal radio check again this Wednesday evening at 7PM.? Just to let you know, we had some issues hearing everyone due to the lack of transmit power.? This is why we switched to CH2.? Hopefully, we will be able to make contact on Wednesday.? Until then, enjoy the warm sunset.

Dennis

Richard Lotti

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all for all your efforts.? I know everyone is busy.? I also know that we all see the value in doing what we do: to matter and make a difference when everyone else stays silent.? It is rare that someone comes along and notices the efforts of a small but determined team.? Richard Lotti is one such person.? He knows the value of having a prepared neighborhood and he has chosen to step up and do something about it (just like us).? This year, Richard Lotti is a? candidate for Board of Directors at the OC HOA.? When it's time to vote, I hope that you remember the name Richard Lotti.? Help me spread the word.? Let your neighbors know.

Our first walkie-talkie net

Hi everyone,

I hope you enjoyed your weekend of fog a sun.? You should have figured out your radios by now.? If not, email me ASAP so we can get you up and running.? We will have our first radio net this Monday at 7:30PM sharp.? It will be a more structured meeting and you can expect our nets to follow the same format from here on out.? After check-ins, we can open up the net for anything you want to talk about.? I expect to be done in 15 minutes or less.? Please review the Welcome doc in Folders regarding radio etiquette.? I hope to hear from all of you then.

Re: Our first walkie-talkie net

Hi Dennis--

I'm concerned about the "reach" of the walkie-talkies in COLONY.? During the last drill I tried to join, I could only hear you, and no one else, and even your signal was intermittent and sometimes scratchy, and you apparently could not hear several of my calls.? I was working from my front yard at first, and then I walked up Winged Foot and along Greenbrier towards the 2nd tee, to try to get more of a line-of-sight towards Eagle Trace.

Since this was the first time I tried out the WTs, I am concerned there could be something wrong with my units, which I bought maybe a couple of years ago, and never had occasion to use.? Another explanation could be that the distances we're trying to cover, in this the Coastside's largest neighborhood, are simply too great for the WTs' capabilities, and/or our hilly topography (also unique in HMB) make it hard for us to communicate.

Anyway, I would appreciate it if we could run the 7:30 net on Monday for a full half hour, to give me time to try different locations, and I'd appreciate some feedback from you and/or others of the COLONY team members on how they experienced the last drill.
?
Best,
? -Paul

Re: Our first walkie-talkie net

Hi Paul,

Sure, I think it's a good thing to run the Net for half an hour.? I'm also available right now if you want to do a quick radio check.? Remember that we switched to CH2 (462.587.5 MHz no PL).?? This gives everyone the full 2W of transmit power.? If you have a BF UV-5R, you should be capable of reaching the outskirts of OC using the stock antenna.? I did this test already with my son.? I use CHIRP to program my BF.? My guess is that you are missing that last ".5" in your frequency entry.? If you need help programming your BF, I can program it for you using CHIRP.

As an alternate approach, do you have a UHF radio that can TRX FRS?

Re: Our first walkie-talkie net

Dennis--?

Last time I tried both my Midland (Ch 9) and my Baufeng F8HP? (correctly programmed) to no avail.? I'd be happy to try with u again this PM.? Best thing is to phone me first, and we can keep phones open.? I wud call u, but I can't find ur number.? ?

The Great Shakeout

First of all, I would like to congratulate all of you who participated in last night's Net.? After a few minutes of troubleshooting, we were able to get 3.5 walkie-talkie (WT) operators up and running:? Eagle361, Eagle368, WingedFoot2101, and Carnoustie127!?

We are officially live.? So, now what??

The Great Shakeout by Fire Chief Dave Cosgrave is what's next.? It is scheduled to happen on October 10, 2020 between 10:00am and 12:00pm.? For more information, please visit:

https://www.coastsidecert.com/

We will be running a simulated earthquake disaster.? Basically, we will be attending the Chief's zoom meeting (invite TBD).? At around 10:00am, a simulated earthquake will occur.? This is where we come in.

We will:
1.? duck under a secure structure and ride it out.
2.? assess ourselves (and our family) that we are okay.
3.? assess our home and determine whether or not it is safe.
4.? turn on our WTs and tune to CH2.
5.? GO OUTSIDE and assess our neighborhood for damages and emergencies (this will be scripted).
6.? report your findings to Net Control (to simplify, I will be Net Control).? Do this OUTSIDE for the best reception possible for our WTs.
7.? if possible, meet at our rally point (lake bench).
8.? relay reports to the Emergency Operations Control (EOC).? I will do this with my ham radio.
9.? relay back messages from EOC to you (if any).
10.? repeat Steps 5 - 9 for other OC neighborhoods that we did not cover.
11.? do this as quickly, calmy, and effectively as possible.
If we cover all of OC, then that's GREAT!? If not, then we will cover what we can.? The goal is to get communications up throughout the entire Coastside Region and to convey messages successfully from you to the EOC and back to you.

Some notes to ponder:
1.? We cannot cover the entire Ocean Colony with just 4 people in 1.5 hours.
2.? Ideally, we should have 2 groups of people at the Rally Point:? a HT Net Control + scribe and a Ham Radio Operator + scribe.? That's 4 people!? Realistically, we need a WT Net Control and a Ham operator (2 people).? More than likely for this event, the ham operator will also be the WT Net Control unless we can have more participants.? Being a CERT is a plus.
3.? You don't have to be an adult to participate.? You just need a WT!? Are you married?? Got kids?? Do you have a pet that can operate a radio or write?? You can be a kid with a radio and a bike/skateboard/etc.? You can be an adult with a bike and a WT.? You can be a senior with a WT at the window on at the front porch.? You can even be a senior with a skateboard and a WT at someone else's window!? It would be super to have a spouse/partner/child scribe for us.
4.? Not all requests will be fulfilled by EOC.? For the most part, we will have to fend for ourselves.? That's when it's time for our Community Emergency Response Team members (CERTs) to shine.? We have 2 CERTs in our Net now.? Our CERTs will address most of our concerns.
5.? I am open to suggestions.? Feel free to throw an idea or two in the mix.
6.? We only have 3 weeks to prepare for this event.? When the time comes, ready or not, it will be "GO TIME".
7.? We will do 2 debriefings:? one immediately after the event and one during the following OCEAN WT Meeting.
8.? I will get our scripts ready and hand them out.? We only have 4 operators at this moment.? So, I will prep at least 4 scripts.? I will have them ready this week.
9.? Rolls might change on-the-fly.? Be prepared for anything.
10.? Remember, our primary goal is to establish communications.? Try not to be a hero and enter a burning house to save a neighbor or a pet.? We need everyone to be on their WTs.

Please post your questions and comments to this thread.
