I'm buying a 15M Cushcraft 5 el yagi on a 24ft boom (9.5dbf) for FD. Thinking about doing the collapsable driven & reflector elements to make a L-A-R-G-E quagi (11+ dbf). October is all about the Peach State Star Gaze! This year it will be held from Wednesday, October 13 through Sunday, October 17th, over our traditional third Friday General Membership Meeting. The PSSG Committe has gone to great lengths to secure wonderful speakers, workshops, and door prizes for this event. Therefore we will not be having a meeting at Emory this month. In this month's space, we'll showcase the speakers of the PSSG, beginning with our keynote speaker. Eric Honeycutt Eric's talks at this years PSSG will be "PNe's" and "Challenges of the Fall Sky" This year's PSSG keynote speaker is Eric Honeycutt. Eric Honeycutt of Raleigh NC, is one of the top planetary nebulae (PNe) observers in the U.S.. He is the owner and moderator of the Planetary Nebulae Yahoo Group and is a regular speaker at star parties. Eric¡¯s accomplishments include: successful observations of the entire Abell Planetary Catalogue; a featured PNe article in Sky and Telescope¡¯s May 2002 issue. Eris Planetary Nebula Resource for the Advanced Amateur Astronomer website can be found at http://www.icplanetaries.com Ron Buta "Spiral Galaxies: from Lord Rosse to the Present" Spiral galaxies are massive pinwheel-shaped systems of stars, gas, and dust bound together by gravity into a single unit. These intriguing objects, the ultimate in "deep-sky" observing targets and also the chief victims of light pollution, have always had an air of mystery about them. How did they get their shapes, and what causes the variety of features seen in spirals? This talk will describe the discovery of the nature of the spirals, beginning with Lord Rosse¡¯s observations at Birr Castle in the 1840s. Lord Rosse and his assistants used the world¡¯s largest telescope at the time to detect spiral structure in more than two dozen nebulae. Rich Jakiel "Mars" The talk will discuss the current state of Martian Geology (and the search for water/life) with heavy emphasis on the findings from the latest probes and landers/rovers. Numerous images from the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS), Mars Express (ESA), Pathfinder and the current Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit, Opportunity) will be shown, many of which have not been published in science and astronomy magazines. Blank Food for thought for 2005: What is category 'AB' such that KP2AA with a power mult of 5!! can have 400 less Q's yet over double the score? Is that category battery powered? If so we need a Director of Battery Power Management next year! If it matters I counted us #13 raw Q's! Congrats everyone. Jim 'MBP

The ARRL web page has the 2004 Field Day scores posted (members only). N4N dropped one notch overall but still a competitive effort at number 21 overall, and still number one in Georgia! My quick look shows two stations from the southeast division ahead of us--one from VA and one from AL. The next highest Georgia score was from the Buckhead Contest Club at number 41 with a very respectable 2A effort with only 7 participants. Some new competition on the horizon! Congrats on another fine effort! Our Molecular Interstellar Neighborhood Date: Friday, November 05, 2004 Time: 8:00 PM Speaker/Performer: Loris Magnani Location: Bradley Observatory When you think about astronomy and astronomical research, chances are you don`t have Georgia on your mind. You might be more likely to think about the observatories on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, or the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, or the telescopes at the summit of Cerro Tololo. But there is a great deal of astronomical research going on right here in your own backyard. Lectures this year emphasize the role that astronomers in Georgia are playing to advance our understanding of the cosmos, from the solar system to the farthest reaches of the observable universe. Loris Magnani of the University of Georgia will discuss "Our Molecular Interstellar Neighborhood." He applies much of his research to observational radio astronomy of the interstellar medium with particular emphasis on molecular clouds. Magnani routinely observes at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, and at the 100-meter radio telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. All talks are free and open to the public. TL-922 2
Hey gang: I just picked up a TL-922 that is really clean, and the price was right. The only problem is that there was no user / Operator manual. It's been a long time since I've owned one of these, and can't remember the details. Does anyone have a manual available? Of course, I'd be happy to pay for copying / postage / time and trouble. I've checked online to no avail, so if you know a website, I'd appreciate that also. 73 de KN6RO Roger

Equipment... 3
I'm getting rid of some equipment and parts. No, I'm not getting out of radio, just not enough room at the new house and have those awful covenant restrictions to deal with now. I'll use the moolah to put an HF rig in my truck, so your thoughts are welcome on that issue too. I have an Astron 35M P/S, light use, excellent condition, about a year old. A Philips dual trace o-scope. Loads and loads of electronic parts. And a full wall in my garage of other toys and gadget stuff. If you are interested, email me at nancydarling @charter.net. I'll take a picture later of the garage and email anyone interested. (Be afraid :) I can also bring some stuff to the next PARC meeting (5th Tuesday this month). I don't have everyone's email on this machine, so if you're in PARC, pass this on. Many thanks, Nancy KG4IUL

Annual holiday season Field Day kickoff meeting 7
Ladies and Gents: It's about time for our kickoff meeting to set the scope of our Field Day effort for 2005. Anyone interested in a gathering over the holidays? I would suggest the usual place (Hemmingways on the square in Marietta). If you're interested, let me know what days you can make it and we'll try and find a best time. With Christmas and New years being on a Saturday, my guess is Saturdays are out. If we want this to be on a weekend, I could make it on Sun Dec 26 or Jan 2. Any interest? Peter One Dxpedition UPDATE
Date: January 21, 2005 From: Team co-leaders: Ralph Fedor, KOIR and Bob Allphin, K4UEE DXpedition new dates - mid-February, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Our last press release announced a delay in the 3YOX Dxpedition to Peter I. We can now give you more specific information. The vessel we have chartered could not meet the original sailing date. The renovations and modifications taking place on the ship were not completed on schedule. K4UEE and LA6VM just returned from a visit to Chile that included an inspection of the team's chartered vessel, a meeting with the CEO of the charter company and the shipyard project supervisor, and an inspection of the team's equipment/supplies in our sea container stored in Punta Arenas. We were disappointed to see that the ship is still not ready. Work is progressing, however, and the charter company tells us they expect to be ready to sail for Peter I on February 10. We are not entirely confident the work can be completed on time, but the team is prepared to assemble in Punta Arenas, Chile on February 8. If all things go well, we will arrive at the island about 6-7 days after departure, depending on the route, weather, and ice conditions. Our landing operations will commence immediately once the weather allows for safe helicopter operation. We will first establish a safe, secure, and self-sufficient camp. Once this is complete we will begin setting up stations and antennas. We will be on the air as soon as possible, but this too is dependent on the conditions on the island. Blizzards, high winds, and low visibility are very real potential problems. We still plan to bring up nine stations with amplifiers and a large array of antennas. Despite the schedule change, the team still hopes to spend two full weeks on the island. And, very importantly, our entire team remains intact. The state of preparation of the ship, the location, complex logistics, weather, and sea ice are all challenges and largely out of our control. We will do all that is within our power to complete this DXpedition safely and within this new time frame. If all goes well and we sail as planned on February 10, we will return to Punta Arenas on March 10th. Check our web site, www.peterone.com, regularly for updates. This is a huge undertaking and very, very expensive. The team members are funding 74% of the total cost and need your help with the remaining expenses. Your contribution will be very much appreciated. Send contributions to either: K4UEE, F2JD, JA1ELY or ZL2AL (check the website for an easy-to-use donation form).

CQ Field Day 2005! 12
Hey gang, Time to mark your calendars! Once again, we plan to activate special event station N4N for Field Day 2005! The operation will be from the same site, a wonderful spot on a 200 acre farm in Paulding County with wide open pastures for towers and beams, surrounded by tall trees just right for the wire antennas! This year's event will, as always, be the fourth full weekend in June--June 25-26th. Last year we added a second CW station, a couple more serious-business CW operators, a yagi for 40m phone, and a serious satellite setup and we topped 3800 contacts with a 9A operation! We had a ton of fun, despite getting a bit wet during setup and teardown as some "interesting" thunderstorms passed through. We wound up number 21 overall, number one in 9A, and Number 1 in Georgia! This year, the plan is build on our past success and maybe shoot for top 5 overall. We have plenty of yagis, rotors, tower parts, and radios, so we've got enough equipment lined up to keep the effort at 9A, with four stations on HF phone, 3 stations on HF CW, one HF digital station, and the VHF/UHF and satellite stations. We'll also be set up for the Get-On-The-Air (GOTA) station. Like last year, we'll operate in the 150W category, with computer logging using Writelog with networked computers. Camp setup will begin on Thursday or Friday, and antenna/station setup will begin 2:00pm Friday. If the propagation gods smile on 10 and 15 meters, we should be able to top 4000 QSOs! The most important need is for operators--YOU! We can make fine tuning adjustments to the plan later, but we need to get some idea of how many folks are interested. So, please let me know what your current plans are for this year's Field Day: 1. I¡¯m in! Sign me up as a full-time participant. 2. I¡¯m interested and will be there part time, but not the whole weekend. 3. I probably won¡¯t participate, but I¡¯d like to see the email traffic and may join in later. 4. I won't be making it this year. We¡¯ll be cruising the hamfest boneyards over the next few months for a few odds and ends to fine-tune the setup. If you are interested in participating and have any of the following that could be available to the group for field day, please let me know so we can put our pennies where they count the most: Rohn 25 flat or hinged base Rohn 25 top section (we use 20 or 30 foot towers) Coax cable¡ªespecially long pieces Folding tables (like banquet tables) and comfortable portable chairs for operators Tents/shelters large enough and strong enough to house operating positions (we have the two 10x20 white tents from last year and other assorted smaller tents/shelters for sleeping and hanging out) Generators (3-5KW variety) Also, if you know of any others who may be interested in participating, invite them to join the yahoo group, or let me know and I¡¯ll be glad to add them to the email list. Think Field Day! Update: Responses so far for FD 2005 5
Hey folks, It looks like we are pretty far along on rounding up the ¡°usual suspects¡± for field day. Responses so far are (in alphabetical order): In full time: KD4SHH, KE4ENI, KE4UW, KG4IUL, KN6RO, KT4XN, WA2MBP, WB4SQ, WB8VTK Can¡¯t make it: NE4S, WK4U Haven¡¯t heard yet from: Folks who have usually played in the past: AA4RC (Robin), KF4JVD (Jeff), KF4TJY (Shane) Folks who have occasionally played in the past: WO0LY (Tim), KE4WIO (Tom), N1KDO (Jeff), N4NBL (Phil), W5BJV (Marcel) Folks from PARC who played last year: AG4PR (Danny), KF4RPQ (Al), KF4ZNG (Gill), KR4KZ (Mike), N4LIX (Ginger), WD4LUQ (Bill), Folks who have expressed interest, but haven¡¯t played so far: AF4MP (Zyg), K9MUG (Darrell), KF4BUT (Hal), KG4VTY (Art), N8EKA (Vester) If the regulars can make it again, and even half the others, we should have a pretty good crowd for Field Day. As usual, we do need some more CW operators. If you know someone we can invite, by all means twist arms, call in favors, or whatever you think will work to reel in some CW ops. Dave KE4UW

Grid square for Field Day site 4
Do any of you have the grid square for the field day site? I have received a card for a 6m contact last year, and he has requested that I include the grid square. If not, does anyone have the GPS coordinates? I¡¯m not sure, but I think I can find the grid square if I have the GPS coordinates. Thanks! Think Field Day! Dave

Peter I Press Release #13 Date: February 15, 2005 From: Team co-leaders: Ralph Fedor, K?IR and Bob Allphin, K4UEE It's a GO!!!! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE After a trying week of travel, re-positioning of the team and equipment, working with a new ship, being blind-sided by cancellation of the first helicopter company, negotiating a new helicopter contract, and re-configuring our supplies; the 3Y?X team is ready to roll! Today at 1800 UTC arrangements with the ship and the new helicopter company contract were finalized. Specifications of the helicopter and experience of the pilot were reviewed and found satisfactory. Our ship, the Cavendish Sea, and a Lama helicopter will begin moving in a matter of hours and converge on Ushuaia, Argentina. This evening we will begin an extensive review of our shelter set up procedures, camp layout, and equipment review. We will continue our familiarization with our radios and propagation. When you hear us signing LU/, please call us so we can continue to study propagation from this part of the world. Don't worry about duplicate contacts. We expect to depart from Ushuaia midday, February 18, and begin our sail to Peter I. Weather permitting; we will land on Peter I within five or six days. Because our time on the island has been shortened by the difficulties we encountered, we will shift to the "fast strike" mode and get one or two stations on the air as soon as possible. These last days have been extremely difficult for us. Uncertainties were around every corner. With things changing so rapidly, it was difficult to release meaningful information. We are now better positioned and can send out updates more frequently. Our entire team thanks the DX community for their patience and good wishes expressed on the air. Please continue to check our web site for updates. This is a huge undertaking and very, very expensive. The team members are funding 74% of the total cost and need your help with the remaining expenses. Your contribution will be very much appreciated. Send contributions to either: W4GKF, F2JD, JA1ELY or ZL2AL (check the website for an easy-to-use donation form).
