Dave,

I will be working on Winlink as well to get ready for FD. Haven’t made a connection from Richmond yet but will be working on it.

I will need to check my log to dig up Digipeater info, but off the top of my head, the one I have used is in Gwinnett County.? I’m not aware of a listing.

My station consists of VaraFM software, or Packet software, decoded by an outboard sound card connected to and from my 2 M FM rig.? On HF, it is VaraHF software working through the built-in sound card on my K3. There is other functional HF software, however this too is seldom used.? Vara is available in a free version that works just fine, or a purchased version that provides significant speed and functional improvements.

Hey guys, it's my pleasure to pass on the knowledge, your gain, NFARL's loss (besides it a good review for me too), but just remember where you keep your notes on how-to, rather then trying to remember all the details. ?

FW: ARRL Member Bulletin for June 6, 2024

Another update on the ARRL cyber attack.

?

Some of you have been asking where the info comes from that it was ransomware, or that a ransom was paid.? I’m the one who shared that with Jeff 1, because that is what I heard in the ARRL forum at the Atlanta Hamfest.? Bicycle John KB4SLV and I were at the forum,? Mickey Baker shared info on a number of recent happenings at ARRL.? Among other things, he shared that he was particularly opposed to taking the printed magazine away from those like me who had 2 plus years left on a three year renewal.? He then discussed the cyber attach, said it was a ransomware attack, and said the ransom was paid.? I looked at John and said “did he just say they PAID the ransom?”? John said that’s what he heard.? Mickey went on to say that maybe there was some kharma involved, since coincidentally the amount of the ransom was about what it would have cost to have mailed those QSTs.?

?

That’s about all the detail I heard.?

?

I’m a bit puzzled why ARRL isn’t saying the same thing in communications to members if Board members are sharing that at hamfest forums.? Maybe one hand doesn’t know what the other is doing.? I also can’t shake the sense that ARRL isn’t being completely forthright about all this.? That’s just my opinion, I may be wrong.?

?

Outside the forum I asked Mickey when he thought LOTW might be back on line.? He guestimated it would be another month (from then, not from the onset in May).? So maybe late June or early July.?

?

In the immortal words of Forrest Gump, “That’s all I have to say about that”.?

MEMBER BULLETIN

?

June 6, 2024

?

Dear ARRL member,

?

We are writing to inform you of a serious incident that has impacted ARRL’s operations. On or around May 12, 2024, ARRL was the victim of a sophisticated network attack by a malicious international cyber group. We immediately involved the FBI and engaged with third party experts to investigate.

?

On May 16, on the eve of the ARRL National Convention in Ohio, we posted a notice on our website to inform members about the incident. Since then, we have made substantial progress to mitigate the impact of this attack on our organization. We have been posting regular updates, including the status of restored services. Please refer to our dedicated news post at .

?

We are aware that certain members believe we should be openly communicating everything associated with this incident. We are working with industry experts, including cyber crime attorneys and the authorities, who have directed us to be conservative and cautious with our communications while restoring the ARRL network.

?

Many of our services and programs have been impacted by this attack. We have been diligently assessing each system to ascertain the extent of compromise. For example, while the Logbook of The World? server and related user data were unaffected, we have taken the precautionary measure of keeping the service offline until we can ensure the security and integrity of our networks. Similarly, access to Online DXCC is unavailable, although individual award data remains secure.

?

Fortunately, some of our key systems, such as the ARRL website and our association membership system, were unaffected. Despite the severity of the attack, no personal information was compromised. Additionally, ARRL does not store credit card information anywhere on our systems, and we do not collect social security numbers.

?

Our Directors have heard from some members who are concerned about managing their membership renewals. Members can renew online at or by phoning ARRL.

?

We understand the frustration and inconvenience this incident has caused, and we sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as our dedicated staff and partners continue to work tirelessly to restore affected systems and services.

?

Thank you for your ongoing support.

As of now, we have 6 folks in for Field Day:? AE4TQ Eddie, KB4SLV John, KE4QFB Larry, KE4UW Dave, N1KDO Jeff, and WB4SQ Gary.? Gary is also bringing a neighbor who can operate as a GOTA operator (John can also operate GOTA as well).

We have 3 or 4 radios committed:? Eddie’s IC-7300, Larry’s FTDX-10, my TS-590, and maybe Jeff’s K3.? We can decide FD weekend if we want to operate as 3A or 4A.? We have the option to use all four radios and be 3A if one radio is used only for GOTA and/or 6m. The TS-590 will be set up for CW, digital, or phone.? The IC-7300 and K3 for digital, and the FTDX-10 for phone.? I have a TS-2000 for a spare, but it’s good for phone or CW only.??

Barring some unforeseen solar snafu, we should have access to 10/15/20/40 during the day, so we can keep four radios busy.? At night we should have 80 and 40, and 20/15 until the wee hours when we won’t have four operators left awake anyway. ?? The goal is to have enough radios to keep everybody who wants to operate operating enough to make it fun.? Take time to cool off in the pool, shoot the breeze a bit, or watch others to learn something new.? Maybe a couple other folks will come by and operate a little bit—use that time to take a break.

Here are some opportunities for bonus points:

·?????? 300-400 points for? Emergency Power:? We will have a Honda EU2000 generator and a couple of solar panels.? One station may run full time on solar.

·?????? 100 points for Message to Section Manager:? I’ll try WINLINK again, maybe on HF this time.?

·?????? 100 points for Message Handling:? Again, I’ll try winlink.? I’ll have 10 messages ready to send.

·?????? 100 points for Satellite QSO:? I’ve got it this year.? (Thanks to all the help from Eddie)

·?????? 100 points for Alternate Power:? We will be able to make at least 5 QSOs on solar charged battery power

·?????? 100 points for Copying the ARRL Bulleting:? Eddie will have FLDIGI ready to copy the bulletin on CW and Digital.? Probably Eric too.?

·?????? 100 points for Educational Activity:? Eric will treat us to an educational activity via zoom.?

·?????? 100 points for GOTA coach:? Gary will be the GOTA coach and is bringing one GOTA operator.? We may have other GOTA ops.? No limit to GOTA QSO’s per operator

·?????? 5 points per QSO for GOTA operation, any mode, and no power multiplier:? Could be a big deal.? Maybe some GOTA digital too?? 200 QSOs would add 1000 points.? Our total score last year was 3600.

·?????? 50 points for Web Score Submission:? I’ve? got it.?

·?????? 100 points for Social Media:? For promoting N4N Field Day on Facebook, etc. I’m sure you computer savvy folks can do that.?

·?????? 100 points for Safety Officer:? Having a designated Safety Officer using the Safety Check List to keep us all safe.? Need a volunteer.?

So if we do 4A, that’s? 1350 points plus whatever we get from GOTA (assuming WINLINK cooperates, otherwise 1150).?

Menu TBD, but I’ll make arrangements for lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday.?

Bring you bathing suit and a towel.? We can cool off in the pool from time to time.? No glass bottles in the pool, but cans or plastic cups/mugs are OK.?

If you want to spend Saturday night here FD weekend, that’s fine.? In the (air conditioned, carpeted) basement there is sofa and a cot.? I also have an air mattress and, if the WX is nice, a hammock.?

I’m sure I’ve forgotten a few things, so more to follow.? If you have any questions, let me know.?

Let me ping the group one more time to see who is interested in participating in FD 2024.? FD is 3 ? weeks away.

So far the only participants I know of for sure are me and AE4TQ Eddie.? Between us we have all that is needed to set up two stations, and IC7300 set up for digital modes (courtesy of AE4TQ) and a Kenwood TS-590 set up for either digital modes or CW (courtesy of KE4UW).?

A couple of others have expressed interest at times, but I haven’t heard anything firm recently.? So if you’re interested, let us know.?

We’ll have single-band wire antennas for 10m-80m, and a 6m yagi if we have critical mass to raise it.? We can adjust the number of transmitters based on availability of operators/radios.?

I think it’s a safe assumption that the food and beer will be outstanding!

So who wants to play?
