Re: LOG SUBMISSION

Sorry for the delay, things have been crazy around here. I placed
pictures of the SSTV and ATV demos, and of the solar power station
in the photos folder.

Hey gang:

I'm still waiting on the pictures of the demo modes. I have to
send them
to the ARRL with the submission, which is due this week.

If you have them, please send!

What were the numbers for last year in comparison. Anyone up to a

Hey gang!
?
Sorry about the delay, but I've finally gotten a summary of everybody's input from emails, phone calls, and the Hemingway rendezvous.? We've gathered a lot of good feedback and suggestions that should really help improve next year.? I?have tried NOT to filter any of the suggestions, but rather to capture them all and we'll figure out later how to best address them.? So, take a look at the list and if you have a great idea that isn't listed it's because I forgot to write it down.? Let me know and I'll add it to the list.
?
All-in-all a great effort!? Too bad we have to wait until December to see how everyone did and get the rest of the scores to see how we compare.?
?
BTW, we've now?gotten?a total of 5 QSLs for N4N--hey, that's 10 percent of WAS!??
?
Think FD 2004!

I have been through most of the field day stuff I piled into my garage and I have the following items that belong to some of y’all:

?

Generator (WB6RTH)

Heavy duty orange extension cord—my guess is 10ga, about 75 ft (WB6RTH, I think)

Yellow 12 ga extension cord, about 25 ft (owner?)

Two plastic sawbucks (KN6RO?)

Rohn tower base with the spike in the bottom (KE4ENI?)

About 50 ft of RG-8 size coax with N connectors on each end (KD4SHH—glad you labeled it!)

Rolled up black plastic sheeting (owner??)

?

I also have the following from WB6RTH that I think was donated to the cause, but Mike, if you need any of these back let me know:

?

Fold-up table

2 fold-up chairs

Rohn 25 top section (guy bracket to go to KE4ENI)

?

The only thing I’ve found so far that I’m missing is the 15 meter bandpass filter that Tom KT4XN has.

?

Maybe we can meet for lunch one day and swap the smaller stuff.? Mike WB6RTH, let me know when you’ll be in town and I’ll link up with you to drop off the generator.

I will get with you later this summer and do a carb clean on the

to do the clean out./

If all were perfect...

ne4s

This year, if we could have hit 20 and 40 CW both at the 2 PM start
and kept rolling, we could have switched to 80 and 160 later at
night or early morning. Since 10 and 15 were dead, we could have
concentrated on the live ones with two rigs.

Jim and I discussed which band to open with, with 20M being the
answer. But we both considered 40M also.

The 2 station with more flexible antennae proposal would have filled
the bill for the above.

FYI, For consideration next time...

Mike, NE4S

A couple more points for next time

ne4s

With an 80 and also a 160 antenna for the second CW station, and
putting the station near the first one, we could add 500-800 more
contacts to the next effort. A second 40 wire would also be good.

The second CW station, (both CW stations) need 400 cycle filters.

Label all the antenna coax ends at the stations.

Mike, NE4S

Wrap Up Thoughts

Jeff Pahl

Sorry I can't make it tonight.

Here are a few random thoughts that have been rattling around in my
head:

Had a great time, none of these are complaints, just some possible
tweaks for next year to make it even better...

Big white tent worked great! Just have to remember to bring enough
opaque tarps to cover the top. 3 or 4 strings of red christmas
lights would do a great job of lighting up the inside, and would be a
lot less of a load on the generator.

Need to have a good antenna up for 80 meters before dark :)
Hopefully Roger and I will have the phased verticals worked out by
then. If not, maybe a full wave wire loop? We have lots of room for
one.

If we are going to run 6A again, we need a contingency plan if 10 is
dead like it was this year. Maybe having that station set up so that
it could run data on 20 or 40 during the day? If we use the Gap
verticals, we should be able to set it up so that only one of them is
connected, and then could be used on all bands. Or, that full wave
loop on 80 should tune up on 20 and 40... Just a thought, as that
staion was basically useless for several hours.

We need to figure out how to use the voice keyer feature of WriteLog
if we are going to call CQ. I'm willing to work on this one if
someone can help me get setup with a copy of the program to mess
with. An added plus to this would be that all the stations would be
sound card interfaced to the PC's, so switching to data would be
pretty easy (see comment above).

As several others have mentioned, more robust power would be a good
thing. I would suggest getting 250' of #10 romex from HD, and making
a couple long runs with an outlet box on the end. Total cost of
about $30, and would help the voltage drop considerably. Also, the
UPS's don't seem to like being run on a generator very much. I have
a power line conditioner that I can bring to help make the power a
little cleaner. Each tent should have a line voltage monitor of some
type.

Suggest we find a ham with a crane...

Need to put an N4N sign out by the mailbox for people like me who
can't quite find the place.

Wish 6 would have oppened. Last couple of days have heard or worked
about half the US, and worked Grand Cayman Island today at lunch.
Maybe next year...

Hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th. I'll try and pull all of the
bonus point materials that I have together sometime tonight before I
leave town.
