Yea, I used to operate the MARS station from Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNN0NYN). Then around 1985 the guy in charge of the MARS station started giving me (and others) a ration of crap for not logging enough hours. It was the solar cycle minimum and bands were often dead. So I told the guy to pound sand and ran phone patches from home on the ham bands when propagation allowed. Kept a schedule with McMurdo Sound until the operator rotated back stateside. Lots of fond memories, especially around Christmas.?

Good article.? I never understood why Navy-Marine Corps MARS was discontinued.? Unfortunately the article does not provide any sense of how likely the Author's proposal to reactivate Navy-Marine Corps MARS is being considered by Navy Leadership.
I have participated in a few "interoperability" events with Army Mars, via some GA state ARES events, and was underwhelmed.? I appreciate that the author points out the need for military planners to fully integrate MARS into their normal exercise and planning process.
