Dave,? Count me as a no this year.
W2FMU
|
Had a fun evening with Eddie (AE4TQ) and Joe (AJ2Y) her at the house, and Eric (W4MC) and Tom (KT4XN) via Zoom.? So here’s a summary of our conclusions: ? - Attendance at the N4N FD site should be limited to those who are “fully vaccinated” against COVID-19.? Also, to limit folks to a reasonable size gathering, it is not a good idea to include non-operators (wives, significant others, and kids), especially since so far kids can not be vaccinated.? I know this is a departure from past practice, but unfortunately, it’s in everyone’s best interest this year.?
- We need to limit the size of the on-site gathering to 12-15 folks at any one time.? There will be a core group likely on-site all weekend who have fully committed to being here, some of whom have to travel quite a ways to get here.? We may need to have sign-ups to fill remaining slots.?
- The number of radios we have on the air will depend on the number of folks committed to being here—probably determined a couple weeks ahead of FD at the latest.? One CW station for sure, maybe two if we have operators.? Two digital stations, and maybe one phone station too.? Details to be finalized later.?
- A few stations can be set up on the deck.? If needed, we can use the large shed for one or two stations—it will be quieter, and is also air-conditioned.? We don’t plan to use the big white tent.? We do plan to have several of the 10x10 pop-up tents for hanging out, out of the sun/rain/whatever.?
- We will have free access to the basement (including bathroom, shower, and air conditioned sleeping space).? Access to the rest of the house will be limited.? The risk/benefit doesn’t have much benefit for Margaret.?
- We want to gather the weekend before FD to do the computer setup for N1MM and WSJT-X to make sure we have everything working well before the big day.? At the same time (maybe Saturday before FD) we’ll take down the Steppir so I can do some repairs, and maybe put it back up.?
- Antennas will be mostly wire dipoles and loops.? Dipoles for 80, 20, 15;? loops for 40, 10.? Wire vertical for 80m.? Phased verticals for 40m.? Some kind of vertical polarization antenna for 20—maybe a half square.? Hopefully we can get two signals on any band.? 40 (times 2), 20 (times 2), 15, 10 during the day; 80 (times 2), 40 (times 2), 20 at night.?
? The next step really is to get a decent head count for how many folks we will have each day.? I’ve heard from several folks, but most are un-declared.? From what I know: ? - In for the weekend are AJ2Y, AE4TQ, KE4UW, KN6RO,
- In for Saturday only:? WK4U
- Expressed some interest:? WA4YGG, N1KDO, KK4CHP, W2SWA
? So if it’s 8 folks total, we’re OK.? We can handle maybe twice that many just fine.? But I really need to “maybe” folks to choose—in or out.? We’ll plan the number of stations around the folks who say they are in. ?Those who are in will have an opportunity to sign up for some time slots to operate.? ? Yes, it sucks to have to limit things.? ? So who is in for FD 2020?? Yes or no.? Maybe = no.? ? Dave UW? ? ? ? ?

Re: from Tim - FD thoughts...
I used two lines over the trees last year. The line over the tree in the back of the yard held one side of a 10m loop. A short rope (10 ft) connected the other corner of th loop to one end of a 20m bazooka. The other end of the 20m had a sort Y, one end going over the trees, the other to a 15m bazooka sloping down to the far side of the yard. Pretty easy install.?
