Re: FD2022

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Eric,

The only need for your TS-590 I can think of would be if you really want to set up one operator position with two radios on FT4/8.? We could do that with two TS-590s to keep setup a bit simpler.? Might be useful to show folks who haven¡¯t done it how it can work.? Might also be something we could do to use one more open band when the CW station isn¡¯t operating (we have only one CW op so far).

Too bad you won¡¯t make it for lunch.? But at least that will move the ¡°central¡± location for lunch much closer to Marietta instead of somewhere around Anderson, SC.? ?

Maybe we could try and set up one computer with two radios to do the SO2R thing.? But it might not be as easy with a Scottish ale in one hand.? But if we have enough radios . . .

Hope everyone had a super Easter weekend!

Well, from the folks responding so far, it looks like for FD 2022 we have AE4TQ Eddie, W4MC Eric, WB4SQ Gary, AJ2Y Joe, and KE4UW Dave in for sure, and maybe WK4U Tim, W2SWA? Steve, and KI4YSP Nick for some level of maybe/possibly/part time.?

For those who are interested in participating this year (or anyone who wants to come), how about lunch in a couple weeks to talk about what we might want to do this year.? Some of us may be going to the Calhoun Hamfest next Saturday 4/23 (with a side trip to the shooting range 10 minutes away).? So how about the following Saturday 4/30?? We can pick a place sort of central to those who are coming to lunch.

Feel free to share your thoughts via email as well.? I¡¯ll start . . .? (hee hee):

¡¤?????? With the number of folks we will have, we¡¯ll need to keep the setup simple.? A few wire antennas, the 40m verticals, the 6m yagi, and maybe? a wire vertical for 80m, and call it a day.? Three radios?? Maybe a fourth dedicated to VHF/UHF primarily for 6m?

¡¤?????? I think we learned a lot last year about how to operate off of solar panels and batteries.? It worked pretty well, and we could probably to that again with minimal setup effort, including a wee bit of help from one small generator that I have if the solar panels can¡¯t quite keep up.

¡¤?????? Joe can rack up as many CW points as he cares to, but like last year, it may be the digital modes that gets us the most points.? I¡¯m thinking at least two, maybe three stations set up for digital.

¡¤??????? For much of the day, we will probably have 40, 20, 15, 10, and 6m open.? Three or four stations all on different bands might simmer down the interference problems a bit . . . Or 6m may be dead as a hammer and the solar flux may drop below 100 again and make 10 and 15 useless.? YMMV

¡¤?????? Regardless of the number of transmitters, we have some options in the class we operate in.? We could do the traditional A class, of course.? We could do the antenna setup the weekend before and use shore power for everything and operate D class.? Or we could set up the weekend before and use emergency power sources and operate E class.? Whichever we choose, who you can work and points per Q are the same.

Re: logging?

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hey Nick,

As I¡¯m pretty sure you are about to see, asking what logging program is best is like asking which football team is best, or which car is bests.? If four people respond there will be five opinions.? ?? Bit I¡¯ll share what I use, and why . . .

?

First off, I think the single most important criteria is that the logger MUST be able to import and export ADIF files of log data.? This will guarantee that you will always have the capability to move your log data to another logging platform if you choose to, and you will be able to share log date to/from LOTW, Clublog, N1MM contest logger, or any other ¡°standard¡± application that uses log data.? The good news is that virtually all modern loggers do this.? But don¡¯t waste your time putting logging data into some older, ¡°free¡± software that won¡¯t handle ADIF.?

?

I use an old, old logging program called Logic.? It has been around since the Window 3.1 days, and while it is updated periodically to keep up with Microsoft, it isn¡¯t updated as often as it needs to be to keep us with goes on in the ham world (more on that in a bit).? I don¡¯t know if there is still a higher price to get the initial load, but for the long term there is a fee of $35 or so a year to keep getting updates as they come out.?

?

Like most any logging program these days, Logic will auto-log the date/time/mode based on computer and radio settings so all you need to enter is the call sign.? It will make a stab at identifying the DXCC entity, CQ zones, etc as well, but you may need to update them as sometimes the DXCC entity can not be conclusively determined from the call sign¡ªe.g. VP8, or VK9.? Also, virtually all logging software will keep track of QSL status, print QSL cards/labels, upload logs to LOTW, let you know if you have worked a station/entity before, provide beam headings based on call sign, control one or more rotators, monitor an online DX cluster, identify ¡°needed countries¡± from the DX spots ?and set radio to frequency/mode of spots that you select. ?You should expect all of that, and probably a few others I have forgotten because they just happen in autopilot.

?

More recently, most loggers also work with WSJT-X so whenever you log a station in WSJT-X is automatically is added to the logger log as well.? You will want this feature as there is so much activity on FT8 and FT4 now.

?

The one feature that keeps me using Logic is one that is probably not that important to most:? Logic allows me to select font, font size, background colors, etc for each window, and allows me to edit the logging screen to put whatever fields I want to log wherever I want them on the window (in whatever font and font size I want), and to move from field to field in whatever sequence I want (skipping those that are auto-logged anyway).? I can also add custom fields¡ªlike ¡°Mobile From¡± that I use to enter my location when I¡¯m operating mobile (for the other person, the state/county I am operating in is more important than the state/county where I live).? I just really want to be able to customize the log screen.? No two hams would probably want the same layout, so any log form created by the programmer will probably not be ideal for everyone else.? And some of the loggers are just butt ugly to me.? So I stick with the one I can customize.

?

What Logic does NOT do is keep up with the goings on in the ham world.? It took a couple years before Logic caught up with others and added to auto-logging of contacts from WSJT-X.? Although it has been promised, Logic does not yet have a feature to upload logs to Clublog (that¡¯s something you will want to do, preferably automatically like with LOTW, but if not, by exporting to and ADIF file and uploading to Clublog manually).? One of these days Logic will have them, but to be honest, they should have already been added two or three years ago.? Most other loggers did so.?

?

The DX Labs suite of programs does about everything a DXer would want, and is kept up to date with what¡¯s going on with WSJT-X, clublog, etc. almost real time.? Jeff N1KDO is an expert with it if you have questions.? I tried it, but it suffers terribly from the butt ugly logging window, in my humble opinion. ?But functionally, it is outstanding.? ??And it is free.?

?

Ham Radio Deluxe is another logger that does ¡°everything¡±, and it even includes satellite tracking if you are into that.? N3FJP¡¯s ACLog is also pretty comprehensive.? I¡¯ve tried them, and while the logging screens aren¡¯t as butt-ugly, they are not customizable.? Again, both are functionally good.

?

I¡¯m sure there are others out there I haven¡¯t tried.? I¡¯m sure others in the group will point them out.?

?

So Logic works for me.? But that¡¯s based on my specific wants/needs.? YMMV.? Best advice I could give you is to look at the features of what¡¯s out there, including price, and pick the one that does what YOU want to do in the way that suits YOU best, all things considered.?

?

But do pick one and go for it.? Any of these computer loggers will do so much for you that you will be amazed.? I can¡¯t imagine not having one.?

Nick,

I am using ComCat right now. I have used Logic in the past an both are good. My issue with Logic is having to repurchase the software with each release. Both will automatically upload to LOTW and I can import my ADI files from WSJT in to the program to send to LOTW.

For Field Day we have been using N1MM

Re: FD2022

I'll be busy on 4/30, but could make the hamfest or range on 4/23. Class A or E would tickle my fancy.

I'm happy to lend my 16KWh EV battery to the cause, although I admit I don't know what the 12V rail sounds like on HF. Haven't tested that yet.

I'm interested, and am up for in-person op (CW/SSB/digi) -- I'll double-check with my calendar and family and will confirm. The last few years I've either been out of state or also on a scheduled bike ride (on GA400, of all places) but hopefully this year I'll be able to make it work.

Re: Field Day 2022

Tim,

I've had a big question mark about you for a long time.? A bike ride instead of Field Day?? That's highly questionable.? You can ride your bike any of the other 363 days of the year.

Gents,

It¡¯s getting time to make some plans for FD 2022, but maybe first we ought to figure out who is really interested in playing Field Day this year.? So who¡¯ s in this year?

Once we figure out who¡¯s in, maybe we can arrange a get-together of those folks to figure out what we want to do.

I was wondering how this might work out this year, with my daughter, son-in-law, and two granddaughters living here as well.? But first Margaret decided to go to South Africa in June to visit her mom, and with a small contribution from me my daughter and her family are planning a weekend away, so it will be a bit easier to have run of the house.? So we can set up whatever we want.

Last year we operated 3A, 100W max power, mostly wire antennas for HF and a yagi for 6m, all run off of batteries and solar panels.? Very quiet in the back yard.? Friday setup was just me and the spud gun shooting some lines over trees to put up wire antennas for 20, 15, and 10 and move wires for 80, 40.? Saturday we put up the 6m yagi and the phased verticals for 40.? We had one station on CW, and two stations on FT-4/8.? I don¡¯t thing we made a single phone contact.? There were a total of five folks involved.? We each got to operate about as much as we wanted to, and if the radios sat unused for a bit, so what?? I thought it was fun as we could chat a bit while working digital, and the noise on the deck was pretty low for the CW folks.? We made a bit over 1000 Qs, and a bit over 5000 points.? Very nice balance between decent setup and level of effort to set things up.?

It worked pretty well, but we were losing the battle with the batteries towards the end.? But I¡¯m sure we had additional batteries we could have had available (but didn¡¯t think we needed), and I also have an EU2000 Honda generator we could use if we had to.? (Using the generator wouldn¡¯t affect the score, as we can still only claim the x2 power multiplier because we are running 100W.? To get the x5 multiplier you are limited to 5W max.)?

With the recent rules change, ARRL has made permanent the practice of home stations (Class D) working other home stations for QSO credit.? I don¡¯t like it, but it is what it is.? Maybe we could operate as class D and skip all the setup.? Or maybe do the setup outside FD weekend (a week early?) and operate class D or class E (home station on emergency power).? Just something to consider.?

So let me know who is interested this year, and if you are interested in part time, one day only, the full weekend, or whatever.? Share any thoughts you have via .?
