开云体育Hey
gang,
?
It's
getting to be crunch time for making a decision on whether to use Phil's trailer
(designed to be a big horse trailer) to contain 4 stations, or to use the tent I
got at the 'big tool sale" in Decatur a month ago.? We'll be using one or
the other?to contain the 40m phone, 10-80 digital, 10/80 phone, and GOTA
stations.? It (they) will need to be?located at the far end of the
field near the copse of trees that juts out into the field.
?
Today's weather forecast is for sun Thursday, isolated thunderstorms on
Friday, scattered thunderstorms on Saturday, and sunny on
Sunday.??Doesn't sound too bad, but if one of the "scattered" storms
is a strong one, we'll have to be able to deal with it.? It will be
difficult at best,?likely impossible, to move the stations from
one?shelter to the other in the middle of?the contest and in the
middle of a storm, so I think we should make a call and try to make that work,
with some provisions for a?back-up plan if appropriate.
?
So,
I'd like your?opinion on which shelter we should use.? My suggestion
would be to set up the tent on?Thursday and get some read on quality and
how well we can guy it.? If the tent looks good, we can plan to?use
it.? If it looks questionable, we can call Phil and he can bring his
trailer Thursday or Friday evening.? That could save Phil a bunch of work
if he doesn't have to?make a separate trip out to the?site to drop off
and later pick up the trailer (he's planning to be out Saturday only).?
Sound reasonable?? Other options would be to go with the trailer and forget
the tent, or maybe to have both and choose the best bet as late as possible when
the weather is more certain.
?
I'd
especially like to hear from WB8VTK and KN6RO (owners of two of the stations)
and N4NBL (owner and shuttler of the trailer).? We'll discuss and make a
decision tonight on 147.105.?
?
Advantages/Disadvantages of the trailer:
+ Much
ore durable and weather-tight than the tent
+ Has
some air conditioning capability (will need a fan to push air from front
compartment to the back)
+ Has
an awning that could be used for one of the stations
(weather-permitting)
-? Will require another generator running essentially full-time for
the air conditioning
-? May be noisy with four stations calling in a fairly small box
(had some problems with this in the past)
-? Will be a tight squeeze with four stations inside--OK to operate,
but tough to move around.
-? Not real conducive to GOTA operation with inexperienced op and a
"coach/mentor" (lot of conversations going on)
-? Phil has to make two extra trips to the site.
?
Advantages/Disadvantages of the Tent
+? Has roll-up sides so can adjust for warm/rainy
weather
+? Larger size than trailer (10x20)
+? Less distracting cross-talk (especially with the sides rolled
up
-?? Tent is of unknown quality--never out of the
box
-?? In severe weather, especially wind, tent could be
questionable
-?? No air conditioning (have box fans)
-?? Takes more time to set up?
-?? Will need to work around guy ropes
?
?
-----Original Message----- Yes, Sat only.? I am going to work on the trailer
tonight (I am working to insulate the roof) and will wash the inside out. So far
it looks like it may rain Saturday but it is predicted that it will let up by
afternoon.. FYI. If we want to use the air, it will take a minimum of a 3000
watt generator to drive it. I do not own one that large yet. From: Phil West [mailto:phil@...] Sent: Tuesday, June 24, 2003 8:03 AM To: Moss, Dave J (INPO) Subject: RE: FD Will keep in touch. de N4NBL \At 05:55 PM 6/23/2003 -0400, you wrote: Are you planning to be out Saturday only?? This dupes the call and sends "B4" if a dupe without sending the exchange. Then you would go on to a TU N4N ready for next Q. The ESM mode works very well in an orderly fashion if you're running. If the CALL field is blank, Enter merely does message F11 which would be like "cq fd n4n n4n fd" It's also nice in that if make ANY changes in the CALL field, it will resend the call (either partial or full), then TU N4N (Message 3). So you only use the ENTER key most of the time unless the inevitable repeats where F5, F6, F7 might be 6A GA 6AGA as you have shown above. I see the Elec-Key jack on the front of the 775. This works fine with my Bencher paddle. We just need to sync up the speeds (if we ever use the paddle!!!) I can't test the LPT connection into the Straight KEY jack on the rear since I don't have the pinout and don't want to use the same plug that goes to my Kenwood. But this will be easy to test. Jim,
Yep, we should use the PC to key in normal use. I use the standard conventions for field movement and entry. Spaces or tabs move from field to field. "Enter" makes the log entry. I use the Fkeys after the entry seperately. The Fkeys could be arranged as below, F2-Fx TU FD N4N -- USE AS TAIL END, WAIT FOR NEXT CALLER FD N4N -- NO CALLERS, SHORT CALL FOR MORE CQ FD DE N4N N4N -- LONGER CALL WHEN DEAD BAND DISEASE SETS IN. OR WHEN YOU NEED A DRINK... 6A -- FOR FILL GA -- FOR FILL 6AGA -- FULL REPEAT N4N -- FOR FILL OR CALLING %c 6AGA K -- AUTO EXCHANGE WITH INSERT KEY, I DONT REMEMBER WHICH ONE (F10?) Your recommendations here too.... I tend to keep the messages separted into the small parts, then you can string them together with sequential strokes. This seems to be a bit more flexible than trying to combine things. I have not used the "Message on entry" funcion, it could be useful. The 775 manual shows a paddle input on the front, and a straight key input on the back. If you test the radio, confirm when the keyer function is "ON" and the front paddles work, that the rear straight key still works like a straight key. If this is the case, then all we need is the paddle, and the computer lpt to radio straight key jack cable, which I have. I will get the manual and the cable to you for further testing. My phone is 770 992 5705, lets set up a time. I will be out for errands some, so try 147.105 before calling. Mid day today, Sun, is OK, but before 5PM. more cw stuff

After reading the manual on message orientation and ESM (Enter Sends
Message) mode, I have one question. When I type a call sign into the "CALL" field, hit ENTER, the cursor stays on the CALL field. According to the manual it should advance to the "RCV" field for entry of the FD Class portion of the exchange. What am I doing wrong? I understand that it may be useful to edit the callsign, but this would be a special case and would only involve Backspacing to move from the "RCV" field back to the "CALL" field to correct and transmit the correction with another ENTER. Mike, NE4S, do you use the Enter Sends Message mode? Still can't get the bandmaps to show on top. Jim |

OK, I've now read "Special Message Accelerator Keys". So please
refrain from any lenghty dissertations about not reading the manual, or RTFM for short. I still would like to provide input along with Mike on the message memories and setup, such that they are identical for at least alll potential CW stations (3?). Jim |
cw operation
Jim Nail
OK, I'm now testing WL ver 10J. Everything looks good. I have a
couple questions. If I'm in running mode, I'll call cq with a message like "FD N4N" in memory "F2". I'll then copy the call sign, hit "+" on the numeric keypad to send my exchange. Next, I'll copy his exchange "5A NTX" using a space bar to tab field to field, then ENTER to commit to the log. I then have to hit "F3" to say "TU N4N FD". Is there a way to have the TU N4N FD message sent off the ENTER key when I commit to the log? What is the most efficient use of the message memories/keyboard? Roger are you setting up the message memories so they are identical on all CW stations? Also, how do you keep the bandmaps for VFOA and VFOB "on top". They keep hiding behind the main window. Other than that, for scheduling purposes, please put me down for either VHF or for 10m or 15m phone. And before I forget again, my heavy-duty #12 extension cord is 90', not 100', so if you are going to run a lighter cord during setup and then replace it, please be aware of that. Hard to stretch the cord later :) I have all the parts and info for the traffic passing, and will put the battery on the solar panel in the morning. It should be good and charged by next weekend. Sorry I can't make it this weekend for the tree cutting. Have a good time and be careful! 73, Jeff ------------------ Anyone have an extra heil headset? My two are already committed. Jeff, we may get the 400 GOTA contacts with the boy scouts and visitors. For Mr. JVD, Think big! Think 500 QSOs, not 100 on the GOTA station! :-) -----Original Message-----

Re: CW Setup
Mike Condon
开云体育Tom,
Thanks, I will check the rig, and bring what is
needed for full program?and parallel?manual operation for
CW.
?
Guys,
The
hot setup for a phone station is a Hiel boom mike/earphone, with a foot switch
on a bit of flat board.?
This is the "best" of all worlds, the foot
switch is positive, VOX is "OK", but varies between
operators.
Manual
PTT is "stone knives", not at all an option.
The
contest stations I have worked all use foot switches, and avoid twiddiling the
VOX.
In all
cases, the operator does the logging.? USE the
software.
?
For
the CW station, just a good set of Headphones of any variety is
good.?? Bring your favorites ones.
A bit
better is a set that has a lot of isolation for outside noises, like the
aircraft variety.
?
For
all stations, headsets are a must.?
Splitters for additional listeners or speakers is OK, but the operator
should be "clamped in".
?
I also
have a recommended set of stored CW messages to load into the Writelog
setup.
?
I have
not seen?your operators guide, but there are only a few maxims for a "run"
station.
?
1-Do?NOT let the frequency go silent for more than 4-8
seconds.? Call CQ, preferably in a short form like "FD DE N4N" on CW, or
same on phone to fill in and command the spot.? If the rate falls, you can
use a longer CQ to keep the frequency active.? Yes, I said?4 seconds,
8 would be a long time.
?
2-Try
for full calls on first time.? Do not encourage "last two" callers.?
sometimes this is unavoidable.
?
3-On
CW, run 24-28 WPM.? Slower is just slower, faster looses the casual
callers.?
?
4-On
phone and CW, always give your call on the last exchange...? "Thank You,
Field Day? from N4N ?" or "TU FD DE N4N".
?
5-Be
courteous, quick, and?enthusiastic.? It attracts!
?
6-If
your freq gets "Jumped" confront the intruder at the first sign, and tell, not
ask, them to QSY.? If that does not work after a couple tries, move a small
bit up or down and keep trucking.? Better to shift a bit and keep the rate
up than fight.
?
7-Watch your rate window.? If it drops, ask yourself
WHY.
?
8-Domestic (USA) contests are won when the high rate station is working
3s, 8s, and 9s, on the band where they are best.? This is from the
SouthEast standpoint.
?
9-ALL
other things must work perfectly, and have been checked in advance... Good
Luck.
?
10-Work the dupes, sort it out later in "post".
?
End of
Mikey's short course in contesting.
?
?
See
you tomorrow the weed cutting party...
?
Mike,
