Hey gang,
Well, the results are in! This time last year we set the goals for FD2003, and we decided to shoot for 3000 QSOs and 10,000 points--a target that, based on last year's scores would have gotten us just into the top 50. We met our QSO and point goals--in fact beat them by 10% or so. I guess scores are down a bit overall (I'm sure having 10 and 15 meters dead as a tire iron had a lot to do with that), but it's nice to see that we made it to the top 20, not just the top 50! Number 3 in the 6A class, and Number 1 in Georgia! Wow!
Not bad for an effort that started the Friday before FD 2001 with three people, one little tent, a beam Roger bought that day, and whatever we could find to pack in the truck that Friday afternoon. A fun time and a respectable effort--969 QSOs and all but two sections worked. We learned a lot that year--useful things like we're getting too old for all-nighters. And the effort grew.
FD 2002 was a bit better. Added two more beams and a dozen more people, plus a Taj Majal RV for headquarters. What a difference! Lots of gear, lots of people (15 now), lots of fun, and 1484 QSOs. Still missed two sections, but this time it was Yukon and Newfoundland instead of Yukon and North Dakota. We made WAS in a weekend! Not bad. We added digital for the first time, a VHF/UHF station, and a GOTA station. We even started adding up some bonus points. We learned better ways to mount and raise the beams (mostly by OJT). Wow, if we had only done some planning. . . and had a few more folks, and a few more radios, and a little bit more of everything! And the effort grew.
FD 2003 added a PLAN (novel idea!), a couple big tents, another RV, more beams, more generators, more operators (a crowd of 25), a serious CW effort, and our first ever satellite station! 3309 QSOs! Wow, this planning stuff really works!
Now we're running with the big dogs, and we hadn't really planned to be there quite yet! Guess it's time to be thinking about what we want to do in 2004. We're not really limited much by availability of equipment--we have enough radios and beams to go to 9A and still have a beam for everything on 6/10/15/20. Only real question is how big of an effort do we want to stage? Should be shrink this back to 4A? Stay at 6A? Grow to 8A or 9A? How about 51A? (Do you think those folks really had separate phone, CW, and digital stations on 17 bands?) Do we want to keep about the same number of folks (25 or so), or shall we add another 10 or so? Shall we continue to make this a Thursday through Sunday affair, or keep it to the weekend only? Is top 20 OK, or do we shoot for top 10? Top 5?
Think about it, and sometime around Christmas we'll put our heads together and come up with a plan. In the meantime, I'm gonna take another look at the FD2003 photos on yahoo and re-live it a bit. Can't wait to see the picture of Tim doing the propagation dance on Main Street, N4N!
Congrats and thanks again to all who participated! Think Field Day!

Everyone in our group had a wonderful time last evening. We saw Mars with the South Polar white cap. I think the image I looked at was inverted (white cap at about 11:30). Anyway when Trevor asked a slew of questions about stars and space I knew he was intrigued. The best one I explained was that a telescope is really a time machine! That one really got him thinking...
Thanks Nancy for the invite. New Christmas presents for looking skyward are in the works!

Talk-In for Stargazing on 23rd
Hi Everyone,
Beginning at 4 PM on Saturday, we will have a Villa Rica Observatory Talk-In on 146.52.
Art Russell, KG4VTY, will have an IC-706 in his Jeep and a handheld with him. I'll also have an HT on me (KG4IUL).
Once we start getting folks on site, we would appreciate it if others would help monitor the talk-in. Art is giving one of the presentations and won't be available to monitor after dusk. Thanks for your help.

Important Update -- Stargazing on 23rd
The cookout is back on!
Our dedicated members have worked out the food situation. One member is loaning an extra grill for the evening, and another is handling all the food arrangements. Food will be available on site at a reasonable cost. (We should start serving about 6:30-7)
$1 / hot dog & drink $2 / burger & drink
This is a volunteer run club, and I really appreciate the effort everyone is making to put on a good event. Thank you Dan, Sharon, and Mike for making the cookout possible after all.
And...if you have an interest in photography, we will have some members of the Astro-Imaging group there also. Very cool stuff!

- About the Walter F. Barber JR Observatory
Time and Date
- Saturday, August 23rd.? Atlanta Astronomy Club members will be
at the observing site by late afternoon.? Solar observing will be
available from 7 PM to sunset.?
- Mars, Uranus, and Neptune will rise around 10:30.? Club members
will be observing late.? You are welcome to stay as long as you
like.
- All guests are asked to arrive before dark.? It is difficult to
find certain roads signs after dark, and lights (especially headlights)
need to be minimized after dark.? Thanks in
advance!???
Important Changes
- The club has decided NOT to hold the cookout after all, due to
uncertain numbers (possibly larger than our grill can handle.)? You
are welcome to bring a picnic.? Coffee and hot chocolate are
available on site.
Activities/Agenda
- We will have a solar telescope setup for observing before dark.
- ?A beginner presentation on the night sky (held indoors at the
observatory clubhouse, begins at 8.)
- An outdoor session to help you find your way around the night sky (we
call it star-hopping, begins after dark.)
- A session to help you locate and track satellites.? You will
learn what objects are available to track and how to determine when they
will pass overhead.
- The club members will have a variety of telescopes setup for your
viewing pleasure, and will be happy to answer any questions we can.
- We will have Mars and some deep space objects tracking on outdoor
monitors.
- Mars, Uranus, and Neptune will all be viewable around the same time
Suggestions for a comfortable evening - this is an
outdoor event
- Please wear comfortable shoes and clothes.? You might want an
extra jacket for later in the evening.
- We will be outdoors.? If you are a favorite meal of little
flying critters, as I am, please remember some insect repellant.? I
usually have some also, if you forget.?
- I will have some drinks and snacks available for our group; however,
due to the number of people you might want to bring some also.
- You might want to bring a chair or two.
- A flashlight is suggest.? I will have some transparent red tape
to cover the lens (dim red light protects your night
vision).
Observing Field Etiquette
- Please arrive before dark.?
- We should have someone directing parking.? In not, please park
with your headlights pointing AWAY from the observing field.? When
you leave later in the evening, the other guests will appreciate your
thoughtfulness.
- Please apply insect repellents away from the equipment.? We use
coated optics which can be damaged by sprays.
- Please see me when you arrive for the transparent red tape to cover
your flashlights.? White light destroys night vision and we want you
to have the best viewing possible.

About the Walter F. Barber JR
Observatory
Observatory is on right side of road.
Look for stonewall with an iron wagon wheel gate.
This facility - our only permanent observing site- is located on Tapley
road, near Villa Rica, Ga. It was established in 1978 on an acre of land
deeded to the AAC by the Barber family which continues to own a house
adjacent to the property. Cleo and Walter F. Barber, Sr., deeded the land
to the club in memory of their son, who was a longtime and active member
of the club, but passed away due to illness in 1970 while in his
40s.
The facility is surrounded by a chain-link fence and includes the
following:
- A full-size, roll-off roof observatory building, which houses several
scopes
- A smaller "mini-observatory" which houses its own scope
- A warm-up building (with chairs, electric heater and coffee supplies)
- A field restroom is available on site.?
- Several outside concrete set-up pads (each with electrical power) for
members' scopes

All,
Here's an updated list - open with Excel... Many items are
gone, but MANY NEW items now on
the list..
Looks like Jeff may
get the entire darkroom... I paid over $8k when it was all new... A great deal for
Jeff.
Many new computer items
now listed... Good value when priced low, GREAT VALUE when FREE..!!
Gun nuts - notice a couple of pieces there... These must go
to FOLKS I KNOW - no subsequent
transfers allowed.
Have fun...
Let's see how long it takes to "sell-out" this new
list..!!!

Great.?
Maybe Dave will get on some of the good digital modes now
:)
On the off chance no one
else wants a print processor or a print washer, I'll get them out of the way.? I'm also willing to get
the trays and beakers and such out
of the way, but thought I'd wait to see if someone else really wanted them.? I don't need any 6' sinks,
though.? Been a long time
since I had a darkroom, but I think I remember how all
the stuff
works.
If no one else speaks
up, I'll also get the ADIC autochangers and the graphics tablet out of your way, but if someone else is
interested, by all means they can
get the stuff, or I'll split the autochangers.

Re: Status on MORE GREAT STUFF....
Mike,
?
I was in vacation and couldn¡¯t check
my e-mail. Do you have any parts left? You know I like things I can build or
modify. I will be there Saturday except last minute commitment to help.

Status on MORE GREAT STUFF....
?
All,
Here's an updated list - open with Excel... Many
items are gone, but
MANY NEW items now on the list..
Looks like Jeff may get the entire darkroom... I
paid over $8k when it
was all new... A great deal for Jeff.
Many new computer items now listed... Good value
when priced low, GREAT
VALUE when FREE..!!
Gun nuts - notice a couple of pieces there...
These must go to FOLKS I
KNOW - no subsequent transfers allowed.
Have fun... Let's see how long it takes to
"sell-out" this new list..!!!

Great.? Maybe Dave will get on some of the
good digital modes now :)
On the off chance no one else wants a print
processor or a print washer,
I'll get them out of the way.? I'm also
willing to get the trays and
beakers and such out of the way, but thought I'd
wait to see if someone
else really wanted them.? I don't need any 6'
sinks, though.? Been a
long time since I had a darkroom, but I think I
remember how all the
stuff works.
If no one else speaks up, I'll also get the ADIC
autochangers and the
graphics tablet out of your way, but if someone
else is interested, by
all means they can get the stuff, or I'll split
the autochangers.

Re: Status on MORE GREAT STUFF....
Hi
Y'all from Socttsdale,
?
thanks
a bunch to all of you for helping-out in taking my "Slightly-Used"
stuff...
My
objective for this Saturday is to do the following:
?
1)??? Clear-out the entire Garage of
stuff that will not be moved
2)??? Clear-out the entire Basement of
stuff that will not be moved
?
This
means that there are three (3) alternative:
?
1)??? if you guys can make use of?
items, TAKE-IT
2)??? it get's THROWN-AWAY - in which
case I'll need you guys to help me haul it out
3)??? if not dumpable by us, I'll ask
that the group help me bring it to the driveway where I will have a professional
crew remove it ??????? I already have
somethings like big batteries and a spool of CATV Hardline that will need to be
professionaly dumped
?
Again,
the objective is a clean floor with nothing on it...!!!!
?
Along
with that, I promise that there will be some NEW ITEMS that have not been on the
lists - early arrivers get first dibs...
?
see
you guys on Saturday morning..!!? Thanks in advance.
?

All,
I'm on my way to Scottsdale for a couple of days - back on Friday eve.
I will be AT HOME on Saturday - for those of you who can pick-up stuff - please plan to arrive anytime between about 08:00 and noon. I'd like to be done by 13:00 if at all possible, so I can get back to packing...
Obviously (for those who HAVE been to my house), there are lots of things NOT ON THE LIST - so those will be open for grabs on Saturday. I'm sure we'll all find some surprises..!!
If you get here early on Saturday, you'll have early dibs on stuff that hasn't yet been listed..
400 north to Haynes Bridge exit - right turn at the exit light Left turn at first light - at the Best Buy (don't know street name) Left turn at the next light - at the Golden Corral (Northpoint Parkway) Right turn at the next light - at the MCI Building (Kimball Bridge) Right after 3/4 mile at 2nd light (Waters Road) Left after 3/4 mile at Centennial Drive (Dunmoor Subdivision) 2nd house before tennis courts on the LEFT - 10570 Centennial
Call me on my cell after you exit GA-400
I'll be up by 07:00 on Saturday, so anytime after that is fine.. See you then.. Thanks bud..!!

Mike,
I'm ok with you buying the place without getting permission, but what's this about not being here for field day? We're gonna have to chain your truck to a tree until you find at least two other CW ops to take your place!
Dave

Hi gang, Joan and I are back in town for a short time. Summer has been a real whirl. After Field Day, we went to Colorado as we usually do, and just got back a few days ago. We return to CO Aug 27th to close on a house we purchased there. We didnt really have such plans, but what we found was so good and fit so well we just made the jump.
We will keep the Marietta home, and split time here and in CO.
The new place is 3BR, 2BA, on 2 acres of non restricted non covenanted Pine forest. The location is 3 miles west of Fairplay CO, in Park county. The address is 1066 Circle 73, in a small development named Venture 73, but mail is not delivered there.
The place is flat, and 10465' high, with falling slopes mostly all around. Most of the electrical is underground, with some on poles. There are no street lights at all, as it is all county roads. It should be RF and audio quiet, and very dark as there are no towns of any size until Denver 100 miles away over two ranges of mountains.
There are nice trees about 60' tall to put wires in until more substantial antennae can be constructed.
You probably will hear us from there using N0N as a field day call, or perhaps W0W. I did have K0W reserved one year, but didnt get a chance to use it.
In any case, that is the update from here. I really enjoyed FD with the bunch, and hope to do it again some time.
73, Mike
